SI1020
Wait a sec, didn't we almost move to St. Pete about a decade ago? If that wasn't JR, let me know. Now I see that people have tried to move the Sox for a long time. The whole 1988 episode has caused some of the worst brawls on White Sox message boards. Some folks express thanks to JR for keeping the team in Chicago. I thank a lifelong cub fan ex gov Jim Thompson for saving them. By the way, MLB in Florida didn't turn out so hot did it? SoxFan1
Veeck was indeed negotiating with Marvin Davis, whose intent was to move the team to Denver. Whether Veeck was using the negotiations as leverage against the American League or potential Chicago buyers (to drive up the price?) ... who knows. JimH, actually, at 1st, there was an Italian guy who wanted to buy the Sox but Veeck said no (racial thing) then the white guy (MArvin Davis) came and wanted to buy it to move to Denver for mo money! The deal fell through and nothing happened. Im only 13 but I read this kind of conspiracy stuff!
LDF
Oh lord.. that was no rumor! The guy was so crooked he walked sideways. Thank GOD he didn't get the approval. OMG.. can you imagine? Would have given "SS Hitmen" an entirely different meaning!! you are right, except i would like to counter by pointing out how well sfo turn out under his ownership

Now I see that people have tried to move the Sox for a long time. the St Petersburg/Tampa Bay thing was always in my mind just a ploy, not a real threat - others may disagree - so I don't hold that against JR - and what made me happiest about the US Cellular thing is that JR extended the Sox lease at the field for another 15 years or whatever which is the best he can do to keep the team in Chicago after his death we were spared a lot of bad things by not being sold to debartolo, a lot of bad s*** - first off the fact we would have lost them when he moved them
