Anybody remember the days when a TV series ran for a specific time period, with no re-runs thrown in, and then went away and the station showed the re-runs then? You would actually get the 11-13 or so new shows in a row! It was really neat the way that worked. What happened?

To get better ratings, they basically pick and choose when to throw reruns in. They want to avoid certain times when other programming or events might cost them viewers.

So what is going on now then? Could it be American Idol is that scary of competition???

I didn't even think of that, but I think you're right on with American Idol. Have the result shows been running 7-8? If they're an hour long that it's probably a good idea to get out of the way. I think later when only 1 person is eliminated a week they go to 1/2 hour.

That would make sense. For the past few weeks it has taken up Tuesday-Thursday nights, with Tuesday and Wednesday being 1 1/2 - 2 hour shows, and Thursday night being an hour. Now it will only be on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with Tuesday night being a 2 hour episode (I think) and Wednesday night being an hour.

Absolutely. American Idol has affected the way all networks schedule in those time slots. Their audience is just too great. Hell, they held off hugely popular Dancing with the Stars so they didn't have to compete directly with Idol. Apparently, CBS has been the most fortunate so far in that NCIS doesn't seem to lose ratings going up against Idol. But it is still a very distant 2nd.

This week Idol goes two hours on Tuesday and just a half hour to eliminate one contestant on Wednesday.

The Office already got picked up for next season back in January along with Heroes.

It's quite a sad state of affairs that networks have to change the schedule around to accodate mindless s*** like Idol, and even sadder that 30 million people a week watch it...

The DVR makes it way too easy for people to choose. I will always opt for recording The Office whist I watch brainless crap like Idol. Why? Because I like to watch The Office and its kind more than once. I watch Idol once and am done with it. I enjoy the train-wreck aspect. But I never stop to think I might be effecting ratings.

Yeah, it's not at the point yet where they take into consideration what people TiVo when it comes to the fate of TV shows.

For example, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip gets 11% (about a million extra viewers) from people who just tape it instead of watch it live. Unfortunately I dont think it will make a difference come the upfronts this summer... :crying

LOST is doing that very thing. They are a few weeks into 16 new episodes in a row.

Great to hear. I don't think it's a crazy success, but I'm sure it gets solid ratings, and I imagine it does well in the important demographics. Figured it would get picked up, but always good to hear that it actually did!

I agree. I have all but one of this season's episodes still on my DVR. I like to watch The Office when I can fast-forward through the commercials and focus on the show, with no distractions. I don't like to watch it live.

You would think that the Nielson Ratings would somehow be able to account for what is being recorded in addition to what is being watched. That said, in all my years, I have never known anyone to be a "Nielsen Family". Is there some shroud of secrecy or is it just possible, in my 38 years, 3 cities and fairly large base of acquaintances it is purely coincidental?

So -- is this week's new episode of The Office about to vault it into the category of being another one of those waaaaay too overdramatic shows, or...?

What are you talking about? Are you confusing Greys Anatomy with the Office?
