That's just depressing. Do the schools have an outside mentoring programs? Like the TRiO program? I remember when I was at St. Olaf that they had some success working with kids from the Twin Cities.

They have a ton of them, most of them are new under our shiney new Strategic Plan, of course which the school board almost didn't approve...

They have all kinds of intervention, remediation, and alternative programs, including stuff working with local hospitals and couseling providers. Funding has been the biggest problem in keeping many of these programs going on.

If they don't already have TRiO (it's a federally funded program that mentors kids from young ages (elementary) all way up to getting into graduate school. Like I said, I don't know if MC has any of the TRiO program, but I have a friend that works on it up in Minnesota and it seems successful. In case you're interested here's the link.

Thanks for the link... I am going to look up our exsisting programs and see how it compares, and if it is something that is feasible here.

Also on a personal note, I want to send an extreme thanks, this time publically to all those who sent in donations to aid my campaign. This has been an incredible learning experience for me, and really a potentially life changing experience for me. No matter the amount, large or small, it has all been a huge help, and not only that, but a great boost of confidence to know that other people believe enough to send in something out of their own pockets. Thanks again!

Well last night was the beginning of back-to-back nights I was a little nervous about going into the night, with public forums sponsored by the NAACP and then the League of Women voters.

I was really thrilled with the way last night went. I got questions I was really well prepared on, and I think I reached the audience really well. After lots of stuff you get comments like "good job up there" and stuff like that. Last night I got compliments about how well thought out my answers were, and I answered really tough questions with good insight. It was neat to see this group asking by far the toughest questions out of any of the groups we have spoken in front of, and that is including the teachers and the Chamber of Commerce.

I can't wait for tonight.

All joking aside, you are a natural for this sort of thing. You think on your feet well, you always have. That's a good thing to have when you're doing this. Good luck!!

We just have to get you out there on the streets knocking on doors. You will win if you do that now because you're gaining respect.

Well evidently I got another BIG "endorsement" There is a local guy who does a TV show that many of the older people in this town follow religiously. Not only did he say that people should vote for me, he mentioned me first of all the canditates, and said that if we wanted real change, that I was the one they had to make sure to vote for. :)

Tonight went really well also, I got a lot of questions that I had a lot of facts, figures, and research into, and really was able to tie it in well to my ideas, theories, and knowledge of MC.

I want it to be election day NOW!

It is so cool following this. I'm praying the voters there know a great candidate when they see one.

You know what, I would be remiss if I didn't give Soxtalk some credit for all of this. One of the things the political discussions have taught me over the years here is that I have to be detailed, accurate, well-read, and well-researched. Its also really reinforced the ability to interpret, synthisize, and analyze information and put into theory that fits the arguements at hand. Its weird to think that argueing with a bunch of strangers for the most part could be the potential jump start to a political career, but I know it sure has done some good when I look back on it, even with the stinking treehuggers :P

Thanks again guys, and keep bringing it. We only get stronger and smarter through the quality exchanges.

All kidding aside, some of the best threads in this place, besides winning the World Series, of course, is when there is a good exchange of ideas from both sides and where a compromise of those ideas is reached.

It's a dang shame that most politicians don't do that.

And remember, there's a heck of a lot of people's political careers that started just like this. Don't forget us when you hit the bigtime...

Forget who now?

Anyways, yeah there doesn't even have to be a compromise reached. Half the battle is that there is such an effective job, for the most part, on presenting each side of the story, that even if we never agree, we understand why the other side thinks the way that they do.

Even if nothing ever comes of this and I get trounced at the polls, this is one of the neatest things I have ever done. I'll remember it forever.

And thanks to you and Slav for doing the legwork on building the site. You guys did an awesome job, and the site wouldn't be there without you. I owe both of you tons. :cheers

I'm glad I could be of some help. Good luck with the election. Hopefully the 2nd half of the precincts give you some support.

Bah. I am really not happy about the woman who is winning. Not only was she the weakest of the at-large canditates, but she was one of the weakest of the 12 overall. I don't know what she did, but the tallys are now 1311-1169-1154 with me still in 3rd and 39 of 74 precincts in. I think statistically it is about over, but I am going to keep updating for all who are interested.

Early results are starting to come in... 19 of 74 precints in Laporte county have been counted, with no distinction as to how many are in MC...

Right now I am in 3rd of 4, but the totals are 334-323-307, so its really, really close, and early.

Did you make sure to vote for yourself?

To be honest, it looks like she had some "get out the vote" type of support, because she was pretty visible on the web, etc. She was the one Ms. Kap saw on cbs2chicago.com's website when we told you about it, so I think she must have at least some things out there beyond the typical stuff.

No matter what, though, I think you can still be proud of what you accomplished!! You got some really good things out there, and that's a lot of the battle.
