Guest hotsoxchick1
ok so im driving home from work tonite and listenin to jhood on the score.....why i dont know, but anyhow.......... he posed the question to the listeners...do you follow the players salaries closely and does it bother you or turn you off as a fan knowing what they make???? i listened to a few callers and was shocked at the many fans who dont have a clue as to what a player makes, and dont follow it enough to care except for when the whine about it in the press or threaten a walk out.........me, i dont follow other players salaries much, except for our own guys....and mostly because i am curious as to how long we signed them and if there was a posibility that with a certian players salary we could have gotten a better deal, maybe two for the price of one instead..........so how about the rest of you.. does what a player make have any effect on you or turn you off as a fan??? just curious to everyones thoughts........thanks..... I only care what a player makes if I see him not trying out there. These guys are making MILLIONS to play a game that millions of kids and young adults play for out of sheer love -- no money, just for fun. And for the few hundred that are talented and fortunate enough to make it to the big show, the Major Leagues, it should be treated as a privilege. If someone is making $10M a year (or even more in a lot of instances), I expect to see him trying his best out there. He may not always succeed, but if there's a lack of effort, that is simply inexcusable in my opinion. But the amount of money that they make does not bother me like it does some people. They have a talent that people are willing to pay good money to see, so why begrudge them for it? If anything, hold it against the owners who overpaid for MANY players over the past 5 years or so, not the guys out trying to provide a good home for their families. YASNY
Honestly, I would prefer not to know any player's salary. I find the money aspect of the game a hinderance to the enjoyment of the game. I know it plays a big part in the structure, and therefore, the success and/or failure of a team. But, in a perfect world, money/salaries would never enter my mind when it comes to a baseball game. southsider2k5
I follow it just like I follow any other stat in the game. It is important what other players make, because it effects how much our players can ask for and recieve. It sets the market value.
Grebeck Fan Club
It's not what they make as much as the fact that it's guaranteed. Look at Belle, for example. He's been out of the game for two years and the Orioles are still paying him. Kong's big money is coming to him whether he improves or not. That's a heckuva union they have. Oh lord.. those silly little things called "facts". The insurance company is, and has been since 2001, paying 84% of Belle's salary. As for what they make being an issue.. don't care to much personally. Although ARod was tough to swallow.
mreye
I hate when I see a lazy 10 million dollar player, though. Do I think baseball players are worth the money they're paid? Hell no. Do I think they deserve it? Of course. Everyone b****es about athletes making a boat load of money, but never say a word about actors or entertainers. Does Jim Carrey, Tom Hanks, et al really work that hard to deserve 20+ million per movie then take the next 6 months off? Athletes work year round to get better. Not all, but it's obvious which ones do. I closing, no, I don't care what they make.

Texsox
Doesn't matter to me. Would the b****ing about MB be any different if he had signed the contract? I would prefer not to know it just annoys me. When I go to a movie I don't worry if the actors made $X for the movie. I especially don't worry if the &*^%^% players who just dropped a pop up was making $1,000 a game or $10,000 I boo just the same. I do however feel bad that going to a game has gotten so damn expensive. I remember when my beer cost was higher than parking and a ticket. No, it has no effect on me. Its the owners who pay them the ridiculous salaries so to take that out on a player is ridiculous. Now it does raise expectations. In regards to PK, he's my favorite player but I thought we paid him way too much at the time we signed him to the long term deal. Salaries do have an effect on what players I'd trade or acquire though and thats soley because it matters cause when your a fan of a team that doesn't spend huge money, sometimes they shouldn't go after the best player because he would tie their hands up for years, but instead go for a few good players. If they structured the game like football, it would be awesome for the owners. Basically you play to your level or your gonna get cut and they don't owe you anything but the signing bonus. Jim Fainter
What matters to me is the stupid GM's who give away millions of their team's money to guys who can't play. See Mo Vaughn, et al.
CubKilla
Actually, it should effect every single one of us. The price of a ticket, a parking spot, a soda, a beer, a hot dog, a slice of pizza, a souvenir from the game if you have any kids, etc., is all in direct correlation to how much a baseball player/team makes. BrandoFan
I'd rather Frank Thomas/MJ/Farve keep the bulk of the money than JR and his ilk/ If anyone thinks these stars are overpaid, maybe "anyone" should drag his fat, slow, uncoordinated, brittle-limbed, stage fright-challengedass out there 162/82 times a year and see how many people will show up to watch and consume. The whole infrastructure/system is so bloated, movie star salaries are the least of causes.

To take it a step further.... It effects all of us whether we are baseball fans or not. Every time you buy a six pack of beer, shaving cream, whatever.... the cost of those are higher do to advertising dollars spent on major league baseball. Anyway you look it at .... owners gread, players greed, whatever angle you choose... it all comes down to us.. the consumer. As much as it hurts to face up to, we are actually helping pay Sammy Sosa's salary.
