It's about 20-30mins North-West of downtown Phoenix, so probably about 2 and a half hours northwest of Tucson I'd say.

It's close to 2 hours away it is 130 miles. Last trip took me 1 hour 48 mins I took I-10 to the 101. This stadium would be on the very edge of Phoenix and Glendale at 107th and Camelback.

I would be on Cloud 9!!! I live in Glendale...about 10 minutes from Peoria Sports Complex...and am only about 15-20 from the new football stadium. In a few years...that area around the football stadium will be nice with all the amenities they're putting in. This would ROCK! Not that far a drive to Tucson...just boring as s***. Of course it takes you 40 minutes to get out of town from the NW Valley...and that's with light traffic.

Actually looking at the map and the story...it's actually land IN Phoenix that's owned by the city of Glendale.

Tucson is not happy about this at all and I think Governor Napolitano might end up vetoing this measure because the Arizona sports commision is meant to get extra sporting money from the other states not from cities inside the Arizona. And Pima county also is her biggest supporter which doesn't hurt.

I don't know if there's anything for the governor to veto. I think the commission is a Maricopa County group.

This sounds like it's pretty much a done deal, but it's going to have wide-reaching effects. Spring training in Tucson might die forever because of it, and it very well could have a significant impact on the Grapefruit League. Cleveland still needs a partner for their new place in Goodyear, and the White Sox will need someone to take over their lease at TEP. And the Diamondbacks will most likely want to share TEP with an AL team.

One possibility is the Marlins, if the franchise moves to a western city (Las Vegas, San Antonio, Portland), since they'll have nothing tying them to spring training in Florida. I know Cincinnati isn't all that happy with Sarasota, though there are talks for a new stadium there.

Although it said in the Star article above that Cleveland will not be moving back to Tucson, the article linked below says that Arizona might not approve both stadiums (the one in Goodyear and the Sox/Dodgers park in Glendale).

So basically, if Tucson and the D-Backs can find another team to share TEP during ST with the D-Backs, the White Sox will probably be off to Glendale right?

Sounds like right now it's probably more in favor of happening anyways.

From the way I understood it today the city would have to approve which team comes in. Also the Maricopa commission most likely will only fund one stadium (I would say Glendale's has much more upside).

Take the ? out of the sox's part they have signed a tentative deal to play in Glendale along with the LA Dodgers. Now all that needs to happen is to get the grant which should be easy considering the Glendale officer is much better for the city and the State.

Soooo heading back to Glendale in 08 or 09 then. :D

I'm glad that this has been discussed a bit over the past year or 2, and the wheels are finally in motion for this to occur.

I guess it is not a done deal yet but if I were on the commission and you have a deal where one city brings in 2 teams signed committed the works the teams happen to be the 2 highest supported teams other than the Dbacks in the valley. The other deal has only one team the Indians and no way will the Sox's share with the Indians and there doesn't seem to be any other teams looking to move to AZ.

So basically one city wants a stadium that will have 2 very popular teams bringing in revenue,

the other city wants the same amount of money for the same type of stadium but will only have one team bringing in revenue.

Full article on the move here;

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be headed to the Phoenix suburbs for spring training after nearly 60 years in Vero Beach, a small Florida city that wrapped its identity around the baseball team.

The Glendale City Council approved a memorandum of understanding with the Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. The decision will allow the city to apply to the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority to help pay for a shared stadium.

If the Sports and Tourism Authority approves funding for the stadium, the White Sox would be leaving Pima County, where they have shared Tucson Electric Park with the Arizona Diamondbacks since 1998.

Pima County Supervisor Ramon Valadez said the White Sox's move to Glendale "could devastate spring training in Pima County" since the team draws more fans than the Arizona Diamondbacks or the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders.

Valadez said in order for the deal to go through, the White Sox have to find a replacement team - and not just any team.

Roland Hemond, executive adviser to the general manager of the White Sox, said the team will find an acceptable replacement club.

Moving the team to Glendale is a logical decision, according to Hemond.

"We have a stronger Chicago fan base here," he said. "We feel that we would draw more people here than we do in Tucson. And also to join with the Dodgers - a storied franchise that will draw a lot of people to Glendale, as well - I can foresee that we will set some attendance records in Arizona."

A potential site for the spring training complex is located just across a major freeway from the University of Phoenix Stadium, home to the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, the Fiesta Bowl, the 2007 BCS college football national championship game and the 2008 Super Bowl. Jobing.com Arena, home of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes, is just across the street from the Cardinals' stadium.

The estimated $80 million spring training complex would include 12,000 seats, 42,000-square-foot team clubhouses, an 18-hole golf course, and more than one million square feet of commercial, office, retail, and dining facilities.

Glendale spokeswoman Julie Frisoni said the Sports and Tourism Authority would fund two-thirds of the cost.

Meanwhile, the city of Goodyear and the Cleveland Indians also are seeking money from the Sports and Tourism Authority to build a $77.5 million spring training stadium.

The state will hold a public hearing Friday to begin considering the Goodyear/Indians' proposal.

Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs said she's confident the Sports and Tourism Authority will approve funding for Glendale's stadium.

"Obviously we're very, very excited about this project that will add to what has already been created in western Glendale, and that is a sports and entertainment destination unlike any place in the state of Arizona," she said.

Tucson is still in a uproar over this. The Pima County supervisor is holding a big rally/protest tomorrow at Tucson Electric Park over this. A state rep is pleading with the governor to help draft a bill that would probit the Sports commishion from using funds to lure teams from other Arizona Cities.

Tough crap Tucson! What are they gonna do...hold the White Sox hostage?

A funny thing about Glendale (and the Cardinals for that matter)...they've craved the attention for years now...really worked hard establishing the Westgate area with the Hockey arena and now the football stadium...and soon to be baseball ST. And for years...the Cardinals have b****ed and moaned...HAVING to play at a college stadium...seeking their own identity...a place to call home. Both Glendale and the Cardinals finally have it...and what do they call it...."UNIVERISTY OF GODDAMN PHOENIX STADIUM"?!?!?
