Perhaps since they know that wrist strap breaking happens, you could say that the strap broke and the remote smacked into your couch.

thanks for the suggestions, but I tried using the remote today one more time before looking into the replacements, and it worked fine

 

I just have to deal with it being slightly physically deformed now, but atleast it works
