JDsDirtySox
The Orioles are close to signing Jamie Walker to a three-year contract worth at least $10 million. Walker is 35 and he's never made more than $1.25 million in a season, so it's hard to blame him for cashing in, though he is picking a team with little chance of going to the playoffs over the duration of his contract. It's another misguided move for the Orioles, but it's not like it's going to take away from what they can offer other players. It's not the lack of funds that keeps them from getting big names; it's that most star-quality players can find teams more likely to contend. Source: FOXSports.com Because teams that have large gaping holes and no chance of competing for a long time, need to spend some money on that situational lefty that can keep the score 10-4. They tried this before when they dished out large amounts of cash for Kline. Angelos is a boob with his decisions, maybe they would take Garcia/toolsy prospect for Eric Bedard. Hell give them Vazquez and Garcia. Bedard, Garland, Bmac is a nice rotation that we can build around. And Peter can build his team around expensive has beens and never were's. Dick Allen
I don't blame the White Sox for not throwing that kind of cash at a guy who will pitch 45 innings a year.

JDsDirtySox
I understand that Walked is about to get a hefty raise... but if he does sign with the Orioles, the Sox will be left with options of Alan Embree, Darren Oliver, Steve Kline, or a rejuvenated Neal Cotts. Please Come Back 2005 Cotts
DBAHO
Isn't Ray King a FA this off-season? I know he's been mentioned on here before, back when he was pitching well for the Cards.

As bad as last year was, he was still good against lefties.
fathom
Or maybe Don Cooper can earn his salary this year and teach our lefty relievers an offspeed pitch?

As bad as last year was, he was still good against lefties. I figure the Sox might try to sign a hisk risk / high reward type of signing like King or Romero if they want to get a specialist lefty, instead of trading for one, since they're gonna miss out on Walker now. How bout worse? As in, way friggin worse? I was going to post the stats, but you can look for yourself. I'm not sure there's a statistic that Romero was better in at all. Seriously. I was going to post the stats, but you can look for yourself. I'm not sure there's a statistic that Romero was better in at all. Seriously. Comparing him to the 2005 Damaso we knew and loved? He was arguably better against lefties. The 2005 Marte had a 1.7 whip with a .267 baa, 2006 Romero had a 1.2 whip with a .202 baa. And because he was so craptacular overall, he should come cheap. Noone's saying he would solidify the bullpen, but if you're looking for a loogy (like Walker), I don't think he's a bad option.
redandwhite
Romero was better against lefties last season than Walker was. Romero's a decent option out of the pen, but he's become an exclusive lefty specialist.

I want no part of 2005 Marte ever, ever, ever, ever, ever again, ever. I'd take Romero as a NRI or at around $1 mill, so long as he is almost exclusively used as a LOOGY. Balta1701
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 16, 2006 -> 07:33 AM) Is Speier still on the market? Yes, but I think the whole point of a jamie Walker is to be a lefty. Anyway...we still have 3 lefties at the AAAA+ level. The odds of at least 2 of them having good seasons are in our favor. spataro51
i am a little upset with walker going to the o's.....My only great off season move for the sox that i wanted was to have walker sign with the sox, because i think we needed him desperately! I don;t think we can take a chance on high risk high reward kind of a guy. Kw now must pull a deal out from under his sleeve on the trade market... but it is nice that walker is out of the central! joeynach
According to MLBtraderumors.com Jamie Walker is nearing a 3 year 10 mil deal with the O's. I know the sox were interested and I thought he would be a great addition to our bullpen. Hopefully Kenny can pull something off and stray him back to a real team instead of signing with Baltimore. "According to Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles are close to signing southpaw reliever Jamie Walker to a three-year, $10MM pact. Walker has been solid since coming to the Tigers in 2002." Jimbo's Drinker
Please dont use mlbtradrumors as any sort of premise for rumors. Sounds like a 15 year old cub fan who runs that site. Thats alot of money for an older lefty, there are still some out there i hope.
fathom
Thank you Baltimore. We would have regretted giving him a 3 yr deal for 3 million plus. He really hit the wall last season, and I wouldn't trust Ozzie to use him right anyways.
