Alex Gonzalez-SS-Red Sox Nov. 16 - 8:32 pm et

Free agent Alex Gonzalez reportedly has a three-year, $15 million offer on the table, likely from either the White Sox or the Reds.

The Blue Jays have also been talking to Gonzalez, but they didn't make the offer. If Gonzalez can get this kind of deal, Julio Lugo at four years and $32 million would look very attractive. Of course, if it's the White Sox that sign Gonzalez, the same teams that are considering Gonzalez right now would likely covet Juan Uribe. Uribe is about as good defensively and has more offensive potential. Should the Reds get Gonzalez, Brandon Phillips would stay at second base. It'd make the decision to re-sign Juan Castro look awfully redundant.

Jesus, talk about a lateral move. They're practically clones of one another - Latin ballplayers who are good defensively and show little plate discipline. Uribe has a higher slugging percentage and more RBI's than Gonzalez, yet lower a average/OBP. I would see little benefit aside from his contract, which extends beyonds Uribes.

If we're intent on upgrading, atleast make it a legitimate upgrade. This is an everyday player we're talking about, now a bullpen arm such as Neal Cotts.

The only way it makes sense is if KW has a deal working and that team wants Uribe as part of it. Say one of our starters and Uribe. KW would not want to get stuck without a good fielding shortstop.

There is nothing wrong with a lateral move if it allows something else to happen. Did Juan wear out his welcome as well?

There were always complaints about his effort, but I don't think those problems have been bad enough to force a move.

The problem with such a proposal is matching up a possible suitor.

You immediately remove the two most referenced teams in Texas and New York Mets.

Which teams come to mind? Every American league team (assuming we're not trading within our division) aside from Toronto, the team mentioned within the article, wouldn't fit. National League is a bit different picture, but still rather limited when you remove those unlikely to acquire to two players who'll cost in excess of 13 million. Who's available, Cincinnati? What could they offer for those two?

I'd imagine the White Sox speculation is just that, speculation. Ozzie Guillen has come out and said that Alex Gonzalez is the best short stop in the game, dating back to his days in Florida. I'd imagine the author of that post on Rotoworld remembered Ozzie saying that and considered them as one of the potential suitors.

Just thinking of possible suitors for Uribe...I think Cinci would be a good fit. Uribe for Bray?

Nah, it was someone from Boston.com that suggested the White Sox could be one of the bidders. Not sure how good their source is though.

Wow, Uribe, without Ozzie riding his tail, next to Brandon Phillups. The could win the Hot Dog world series!

Basically yea. I thought it was pretty obvious we'd go after Alex Gonzalez this offseason, although that suggested contract seems a bit too high considering the financial restraints the Sox should have.

Financial restraints...?

The payroll is rougly at $105 mill right now. Take out a starter, and it's at around $95 mill. Take out Uribe, and it's $90. If soxtalk estimations are correct, and the payroll will be about $115-120 mill, the Sox would still have $20-25 mill to mess around with after signing Gonzalez.

I simply have trouble believing the payroll will be as high as $120 million. I think a payroll similar to that of last year (or somewhere like $110) is more realistic.

The Sox will still have $15 mill to play around with after the trades of SP and Uribe are made then.

The Sox may not like having someone other than Uribe at short, but they're willing to take a shot at it.
