CWSGuy406
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 04:57 AM) Considering our scouting, 92 mph with a curve is a power arm. Heh. Sickels says he touches 95 and sits at 93-94. But I'll trust you, fathom.
fathom
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 04:59 AM) Sox don't know ANYTHING about power arms. Cough*Jenks*cough*Thornton*cough*MacDougal*cough*Aardsma Obviously I was referring to starting pitchers, and in relation to the starters we're drafting lately. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:00 AM) Heh. Sickels says he touches 95 and sits at 93-94. But I'll trust you, fathom. Didn't you see the BA article I referenced before saying how he tops out at 94, but his velocity drops frequently due to delivery issues? ShoeLessRob
White Sox acquired RHP Gavin Floyd and a player to be named from the Phillies for RHP Freddy Garcia. Gio Gonzalez isn't on the 40-man roster, so he can't be traded until Thursday's Rule 5 draft is complete. The White Sox could be planning to make a reliever out of the 23-year-old Floyd, a former top prospect who has lost some velocity and struggled with his command in the majors. Floyd works in the 90-92 mph range now and his curveball remains a plus pitch, so the potential is there for him to be pretty useful. Still, he's the lesser property of the two the White Sox are getting.
DBAHO
So if we end up trading Floyd and Gio for Baldelli, how do people feel if it ends up being Garcia for Baldelli? Are they happier than when this original deal went down? And what does that mean for Brian Anderson? Does he get traded to the Rangers for Nick Massett and a SP spect, or to the Marlins possibly for some of their young pitching? Possibilities a plenty. Flash Tizzle
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:43 PM) Its over-reaction city here at Soxtalk. I wonder if Tampa would say take a Gavin Floyd/Gio/prospect combo. Relax people. Half the names we had seen as trade matches for Garcia were our bulls*** and conjecture anyways. They gave up this for a one year rental. Garcia is not signed for a few years. He is a one year rental. Keep remembering that. What upsets me, aside from the actual package itself, is this move appears to be a salary dump. A precursor to something within our immediate future. That may be fine for the optimistic among us, but I'm disgusted that we were willing to essentially give away Garcia during a marketplace where starting pitching is heavily valued. I don't care if it was Garcia's walk year; he'll accomplish more next season than Floyd and Gonzalez will in the next three seasons combined. If the intention all along was to trade Garcia no matter what, I'm convinced Floyd and Gonzalez would have still been available come January or February. At that point, Zito and several pitchers may have already been signed and several teams may have been willing to provide a better package than Philadelphia. We rushed into this. Williams better make up for this travesty. And quick.

Milkman delivers
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 12:00 AM) I've calmed a bit as well. Still not very happy with the overall deal, but I over reacted. We all overreacted, and we've all calmed down. But, that doesn't change the fact that this deal was terrible. G&T
This was a full quote from CBS Sportsline in case it clarifies things for you. "The Chicago White Sox are still open for business," he said. "This is a good first step. ... As we move through this year and next year, we feel these two guys will be able to feed into that rotation in an as-needed basis." Kalapse
QUOTE(whitesoxin @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:49 PM) Have any of you actually seen Gavin pitch? People need to stop acting like they know everything. Almost all of us hated when Freddy pitched last year. He couldn't throw 90 mph, he had a lazy attitude, he got in trouble for smoking the reefer, and he made $10 million. KW knows more than you. All of you. Actually I saw him in a number of starts last year, it was pretty damn brutal.
nitetrain8601
I don't understand people saying this trade makes us worse for next year or we're now no more than a 3rd place team, especially when those are the same people who think BMac belonged in the rotation. Now, they'll have BMac (the young stud as many of you put it) in the rotation and they'll be doing it cheaply. The rest of the positions are the same. Quite frankly, I felt if we kept last year's team, we'd still be one of the top, if not the top team in the majors. That's not being a homer, that's just being realistic. No one is doing anything over the top. We at the very least are making a lateral move with more trading chips/chips for the future.

Chisoxfn
QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 08:47 PM) Here's my ideal move: Fields and Floyd for Baldelli, Sox re-sign Crede. I think that very well could happen and no way would the Rays turn that down, imo. We hold onto Gio who may very well make his major league debut out of our pen this year as we continue to groom him. That or we may be about to resign Buehrle.

mueller280
I haven't been this p***ed off since the genious Krause traded Elton Brand for Chandler. We all know how well that turned out. Is KW trying to show us how smart he is? I'm going to start calling him "Jerry" unless I see how this trade shakes out. There has to be more to it than this - Right? fathom
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:02 AM) Then why did you say 92 in the first place? Because that's around the range of his average fastball. You should know better than anyone how scouting services always seem to mention the highest velocity possible, when in reality, the average is a few mph slower. BTW, people might want to close their eyes when they look up Floyd's minor league numbers the last two years.
quickman
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 10:59 PM) Brandon will pitch better than Freddy did last season, now will he win 17 games? That depends on the offense. You don't know that. Its pure speculation with a young arm. I saw earlier in the htread that KW said Floyd was going to compete with mcarthy for the fifth spot. Lets say thats true, so we traded a number 2 for a potential number 5 with a 7 ERA in the NL. Lets say its false: then we traded a Number 2 for a AAA minor league starter who apparently needs a change of scenery and has been a career underachiever. Its laughable. maggsmaggs
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 11:05 PM) Please, please, please re-sign Mark. We hold onto Gio who may very well make his major league debut out of our pen this year as we continue to groom him. That or we may be about to resign Buehrle. If the Rays traded Cantu, Iwanura could move to 2nd base with Fields coming in at 3rd base, so it'scertainly possible. But it may not even be Rocco Baldelli we're going after. Has anyone thought of the possibility of acquiring B.JUpton to play in the OF instead? Could he be the leadoff hitter we need?
