Carlos Marmol has been doing his best K-Rod impersonation lately. This Cubs team is pretty damn good right now.

Yeah, when Zambrano was removed, I was like, "Sweet! Bullpen implosion!", than saw Marmol come in. His sliders are sick.

If there is ever a case for an umpire to be fined for missed calls, look at the play that helped Houston tie it in the 9th against Philly. Bases loaded, Caballo up, 1 out, 4-3 Philly. Double play ball, ump calls Lee safe at first when he was clearly out, tie game now, and Houston has a chance to win it.

Speaking of missed calls, I was watching naked gun 1: files from police squad. At the end, when Frank is the umpire, HI-larious!

And, I'd like to think that umps get fined for blown calls.

Is that when he just calls everything strikes and even moonwalks at one point?

yep, and he does all these dances. And he has to find the gunman, so he searches everyone by padding them down... so funny.

I just think they're a very streaky team who's going good right now. They still have offensive zeros at two positions (C and SS), AAAA players at two positions (CF and 2B) -- one of which is hitting .350 right now -- and below average production at another position (RF). That being said, Soriano, Ramirez and Lee can carry a lineup even if the reest of the team goes 0-fer so long as they're going well.

The Cubs are a very mediocre NL team with a few very good hitters in the lineup.

Unfortunately for us, mediocre in the NL Central is good enough for second place. And with a little luck, it might just win them the division.

I hope St Louis gets going a bit. Carpenter just made his first rehab start and should be back in the next few weeks, and they just got Maroth who should be an average-ish starter in the NL. I don't expect them to win the division, but gosh damn, make that race a little more exciting.

IF he has the mental makeup to do it, he's going to be a really good closer. He has 2 unhittable and dominating pitches in his fastball and slider that he can locate. I am not sold on the Cubs overall, but Marmol is no joke.

Former Sox farmhand Aaron Miles had a rough night tonight. 0 for 5 at the plate, but that doesn't even begin to tell the story. Tonight's game in St. Louis was 3-3 entering the 7th against the Giants. The Giants had 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, and this happened:

Mark Sweeney reaches on throwing error by Miles, 1 runs scores, another man to 3rd, 1 out.

A bunt out to the pitcher, 2nd and 3rd 2 outs.

Randy Winn reaches on fielders error by Miles that would have ended inning, 2 runs score.

Ray Durham reaches on throwing error by Miles, Winn scores.

Bonds pops out to catcher to end inning.

The Cardinals scored 3 in the 8th, making the 7-6 loss hurt even more for them.

As for McCarthy, he pitched well on his 24th birthday (6 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 2 walks, 3 k's, allowed a solo homer, quality start) but fell to 4-6 as Texas lost 2-0 to Baltimore.

Erik Bedard pitched what might be the most dominant non no-hitter/perfect game I've ever seen. He threw the CG SHO, allowing no walks or hit by pitches with no errors behind him. He allowed only 2 hits, and had 15 strikeouts. The only 2 baserunners (the 2 hits, both singles) were eliminated by the next batter having GIDP, so Bedard faced the minimum 27 guys. He threw 110 pitches, 80 for strikes, and all but 4 of his outs were on the ground or a k in his best outing of 2007 after his worst outing of 2007 last start against us. WOW.

It's happening to me also....good to know it's just not mine.

Phew! No games on now I need to watch so I won't call and complain to Comcast. Better be working again after break.

The D'Backs sent down Carlos Quentin a couple days ago. They're in desparate need of offense -- could the Sox possibly get him for Dye and a pitching prospect (Broadway or McColloch)? I don't think they'd want Contreras unless the Sox ate a bunch of money...

I think the Dbacks are a bit down on Quentin and I would be a fan of acquiring him. I dont' know if they would want Dye or if we could be a team that gives up the prospects to another team in some sort of 3 way deal (with Broadway or someone else going to another team...Quentin coming to the Sox and a bat going to the Dbacks).

I don't think I'd give up more than Dye to get Quentin but I would like Quentin in our system.

Anyone notice this?

I am not sure MLB should take such a hard stance, but on the other hand, who is going to cry for ESPN?

It's nice to see a league not bow down to the self-proclaimed WWL.

Anyone catch the piece on Rick Ankiel on SC last night?

Apparently the guy is playing lights out in the minors.....as a center fielder. Good luck to him.

His only problem, he can't hit the cutoff man or the catcher on the fly.

Slightly green there.
