SoxFan1
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jan 13, 2007 -> 05:45 PM) Does anyone here actually watch oversea's soccer besides the worldcup? Because Beckham is prob one of the better players in the league, and is easily the biggest star.... but he isnt even the best player on his team anymore. Donovan is better at this stage of their careers. I would have to disagree with that strongly. Landon Donovan is extremely overrated, mainly because he is the biggest name in U.S. soccer right now. Will be interesting to see if there are any more to follow. As far as I've seen that is still rumor. You would think the MLS website would be all over that. Maybe they are waiting for the Beckham buzz to die down a bit and let their draft get some attention (LOL!) before announcing it. However, taking a gander at the MLS site I noticed this. It's an interesting idea, a North American Champions' League of sorts. They already have one of those, but no one cares about it. It's got potential (I like the USA vs. Mexico rivalry) because it tests MLS against a more respected league, but all the games are in the US. I'd much rather see games in Mexico as well. I'd love to see the Fire play for US pride in a game in a hopefully hostile environment.

There is such a huge difference between the World Cup and the MLS though. People watched the World Cup because the US was so hyped by the media. It's a matter of nationalism and pride in your country. Also, with international play, people get a chance to see the greatest players in soccer on a national stage with millions and millions watching around the world. Simply put, the MLS just isn't appealing to people in the US.

Most people i remember talking World Cup with, the US was not even the talk.Except for when we talked how bad they were.If the top tier players come to the MLS I would become a fan.Really I was surprised how many guys enjoyed the world cup when it was going on and it was not a matter of national pride. GoodAsGould
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 14, 2007 -> 01:10 AM) I would have to disagree with that strongly. Landon Donovan is extremely overrated, mainly because he is the biggest name in U.S. soccer right now. Maybe he is a bit over-rated.... but nobody is moreso than Beckham. He is a great passer and a great freekicker if thats even a word, but the rest of his game at this stage of his career especially is lacking. Donovan is in my mind no doubt a better player but of course Beckham has soooo much more star power.

Donovan looked like a boy amongst men in the Cup.He will get out physicalled every time against top talent.Beckham shown he can play with rest of the world.Donovan dissappointed. Donovan is in my mind no doubt a better player but of course Beckham has soooo much more star power. Even at over 30 Beckham is better than Donovan. Beckham has played in some of the toughest environments on the biggest stages and has had some really good moments, and some not so good. Donovan likes to play like a star against minnows like Costa Rica and Canada and such, but put a good team on him, or say send him to Germany in the Bundesliga and you watch him wimper and fall aside. Donovan has talent, but he doesnt have the stones. If Donovan had stones, he would be telling people he wanted to play in Europe, with the best. But he likes to nutmeg some 37 year old Ukranian wearing an MLS jersey instead of playing against the best.
