Would somebody please add some substance to back up their claims that they can't prove?

"All scouts would agree." Prove it.

"Cut his walks down to be the best pitcher in the game." Prove it. Walking guys is part of his game.

Carpenter has been phenomenal since coming over to the NL, and he should've won the Cy Young instead of Webb. Not that Webb doesn't deserve the mention because he has always had great stuff. He's like Halladay, a guy who eats up a ton of innings, doesn't walk anybody, and keeps the ball down. Oh and he does it pitching in the AL East too.

Look at Smoltz's numbers. I've already shown Oswalt's, and Clemens' lack of innings is due to contract negoitations. If he's still pitching in the NL, he's one of the best.

Dude, not everything is as cut and dry as the stats point it out.

It's of my opinion that if Zambrano cut his walks by about 1.5 per 9 that he'd probably be the best pitcher in the game. It's possible that might mean he leaves more pitches over the middle of the plate, and thus starts allowing more homers, which in turn increases his ERA and his losses, thus making him a worse pitcher. It's entirely possible, but I don't think it would happen.

You call Carpenter phenomenal but consider Zambrano ove when their stats are pretty similiar. Obviously you hate all things Cubs, which is respectable. However, the stats say that Zambrano is one of the ten best starters in the game and he deserves to be paid as such.

Watching them pitch, I think it's pretty well known here that I don't use just stats to back up my claims. There is not a pitcher in the NL I'd rather have than Carlos Zambrano.

I am hoping and praying that Zambrano takes that team to the BANK!

You say that like it would hurt them.

The biggest fear my Cub fan friends have is Zambrano leaving via free agency.

The Cubs and their fans would be ecstatic to wrap up Zambrano, no matter the price.

With career .500 pitchers getting 10 and 11 million bucks per season, locking up Zambrano even at 19 or 20 million per would be cheered at Wrigley Field.

Unlike the other divisions of TribCo, the Cubs make money hand over fist, and they can definitely absorb that kind of contract.

i agree with santo=dorf if Zambrano came over to the AL he would get destroyed ala Beckett.

noo way, he would take a little time to adjust of not having an easy out in the lineup but after that I think he would definitely be one of the top pitchers in the league.

They aren't comparable IMO. Beckett's problem is he has no idea how to use all of his pitches, whereas Zambrano does a great job at it for the most part (ie when he's not having a temper tantrum). He'd be just fine over here.

yeah, but if Zambrano takes them to the Cleaners, 20Million 6 years ($120 Million)

they would be weighted down by way way heavy contracts, with Soriano also

Zambozo is DUE for an injury. Book it.

Two things come to mind right away:

1. They're not going to see it as "being taken to the cleaners". They're going to see it (and rightly so, IMO) as keeping their best pitcher. Will he get injured? Who knows? Not me, not you. Will he stay as good as he's been? I don't see anything to make me think he won't. Is he worth it? Hell, is ANYONE worth it? He is if they think he is.

2. If the 300+ million they committed this winter didn't weigh them down, another 120 for their best pitcher won't either. Also remember that some of the shorter contracts will come off the books during any new deal they sign Zambrano to, so any fiscal pain they might feel would be short-term, and no matter what we think, their fanbase is NOT going to dwindle away to nothing any time soon. All it took to get the Blue Kool-Aid flowing full-force again was a bunch of mediocre pitchers, one good hitting free-agent and a new manager.

I see 7/$154 or something in that neighborhood, but maybe I'm crazy and I like to predict everything high.

Maybe he likes the Cubs and he signs for Zito money. I doubt he would, but it's an extreme outside shot, and he'll be rich as hell regardless.
