Balta1701
Linkiness. Chicago White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe will be in court on Feb. 21, the same day his teammates will arrive in Arizona for spring training. On Wednesday, a Dominican court set the hearing, Uribe, his brother Elpidio and a friend are accused of provoking a shooting in which two men were wounded on Oct. 3 in Juan Baron, south of Santo Domingo. The injured men were Antonio Gonzalez and Dandolin Alessandro. While Alessandro dropped the charges, Gonzalez hired a lawyer and sued the Uribe brothers and their friend. In January, a judge ordered Uribe to show up in court the 15th and 30th of every month to prove he's not trying to flee, and ordered the sides to prepare for a preliminary audience. The judge's decision does not block Uribe from leaving the country but would make him return to the Dominican Republic twice a month from Tucson, Ariz., where the White Sox have their camp. The penal court, formed by five judges, should have ruled on Uribe's petition Wednesday to revoke the order to show up every 15 days to sign a check up book. They couldn't since they were previously recused. Although the procedure is a regular one, it is strange that the defense uses it since time is against Uribe. "I am innocent and I don't care if I have to go to the ultimate consequences", Uribe told ESPNdeportes.com recently.
kevo880
I'm really hoping this isn't going to be hanging over Uribe and the Sox all season.
Gregory Pratt
So, how many days late will he be?

Gregory Pratt
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Feb 7, 2007 -> 09:31 PM) eh? The whole article appears to have been poorly translated and interpreted. Also: now he's accused of "provoking" the shooting, not actually shooting. Latin Justice!
Steve9347
Man, this sucks.
witesoxfan
what the f***, can this just end? do they really want to make an example out of Uribe that f***in badly? It's just getting annoying at this point. It seems quite obvious that Uribe is innocent in the matter, yet they persist on keeping it going. mmmmmbeeer
So, assuming this is the same judge that said he must check in twice a month, is there any question the guy is just f***ing with Uribe now that he's set his court date for the exact opening of spring training? What a dick.
LosMediasBlancas
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Feb 7, 2007 -> 09:33 PM) The whole article appears to have been poorly translated and interpreted. Also: now he's accused of "provoking" the shooting, not actually shooting. Latin Justice! Uribe must not want to grease the right pockets. A few American greenbacks in the right hands makes this whole thing go away in .003 seconds. That's Latin justice.
elrockinMT
Latin American legal systems are notoriously slow and cumbersome.

witesoxfan
QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Feb 8, 2007 -> 10:38 AM) that's why his absence won't be missed. Buehrle, Garland, and Contreras beg to differ With how dependant upon defense the White Sox are, a loss like Uribe would be bigger than anyone would imagine. Imagine Mackowiak x2 - and Cintron isn't even horrendous at SS.

Imagine Mackowiak x2 - and Cintron isn't even horrendous at SS. seriously though what is Buehrle, Garland and Contreras going to say... "yeah, we'll be fine if Uribe misses some time. It's no big loss??" These guys will stand up for their teammates no matter what. When Widger was getting his ass handed to him, you didn't see the pitching staff lining up calling for his release did you??

When Widger was getting his ass handed to him, you didn't see the pitching staff lining up calling for his release did you?? Not to speak for him, but I believe he was refering to the fact that most of our SP rely on defense to be productive and when you take a guy of Uribe's caliber and stick Cintron in there instead, it is going to hurt the defense, therefore hurting the pitcher's production and numbers, thus making them not as happy. But of course they would never come out and say that.
WilliamTell
Yeah we need his defense at short stop and hopefully he can have somewhat of a hot streak like he did in early 2004.

Simple as that. Uribe provides that, where Cintron and Ozuna don't.

If the pitch is within 10 feet of his bat, he's gonna close his eyes, swing as hard as he can and hope the ball hits his bat.
