Birmingham loses 6-2. Bullard takes it on the chin with another spot start. Spot starts are killing his ERA.

Another enigma is Casey Rogowski, Hawk was building him up as some kind of Nick Johnson-esque stud, but aside from his walk, I don't see anything worthy of note.

How old is he, can he play 1st real good, speedy, power, why no promotion to AA? Thanks.

What's up with Ginter, Adkins and Diaz?  Promotions looping?

Thanks.

Ginter and Adkins have been very good recently. Diaz has been consistently decent. Nothing overpowering, but no real bad outings either.

Adkins recent successes were documented in another thread.

I think that is a fair word for Rogowski. Some basic info on Rogo......

He's 22 and is a 6-4 230lb lefty first baseman. He has never really showed the power some expected (only 29 career HR), but has always walked a good bit and stolen double-digits which is impressive for a guy his size.

He skipped over Bristol and played in low A his first full season, but then repeated low A the following year. In that repeat year, he hit .287 with 14HR and 69 RBI.

Last year, he was hurt most of the year and only played 55 games in high A. His numbers dropped off considerably to .255 3 HR and 23 RBI, which could easily be attributed to a late start due to the injury.

In a perfect world, he would have had a great year last year and been in Birmingham this year. Instead, he is repeating high A respectably, although not tearing it up. He is hitting .269 with 4 HR and 21 RBI with 33 BB, 32 K and 11 SB. I think his walk rate, size and athleticism made many people he was primed to breakout. At 22, it is not too late, but he needs to have a solid second half and then have the breakout year in AA next year or he will get lost in the shuffle.

Isn't Micah Shurnstein his clone?

I don't think you could say that. The Schnur is 6-1, 200. He had success immediately after being drafted by raking all over Arizona in the rookie league last year. (.332 3HR 48RBI in 50 games)

Micah plays 3B and although he has only played in 5 games so far this year, he has picked up right where he left off. (.389 1HR 3RBI). He is playing in Advanced Rookie this year (the level Rogo skipped) and I would have liked to see him challenged more, but that's me. Expect him to have another big year and the real test when he has to play a 140 game season next year.

With Reed moving up, is Chad Durham done?  I thought he was having a decent season.

Reed has been playing RF as well as CF. Wally will keep Durham in the lineup as much as possible, shifting guys around a little.

After a slow start (.225 in April), Chad has really picked it up. Frankly, I can't see how the guy ever gets a hit because he steps in the proverbial bucket every pitch, in effect pulling his hips off the ball. How pitchers don't see that and don't just live on the outside corner, I have no idea. I'd do nothing but throwing fastballs on the outside half of the plate and he could do nothing with them, save an occasional infield hit or bloop. I never really noticed it last year, but it has been quite obvious lately.

Move him up to Kanny.

That's a good idea in theory, but Great Falls season is only 4 or 5 games old. If they thought he was ready for Kanny, why not assign him there earlier, rather than make him wait until June to play??

Maybe they felt he wasn't ready for a full season yet? Maybe they didn't have room and had other players that were ready for full season that they didn't want to release to make room for him?

Rogowski has really got his average rolling after a pretty slow start (Going off memory). Seems to me he's getting healthy and I think we'll see his average climb to around .300 and then he'll get promoted, possibly. If I recall, a lot of teams don't do much late promoting other then for a spot start or two, simply because they don't want to hurt a teams shot at winning.

Rex, am I right on that?

They factor in how a team is doing and if they are making a run at the playoffs, but that isn't only thing they consider. I do know that is what kept Olivo in Birmingham all year last year when he could have gone to AAA.

I would expect them to promote some guys from Winston-Salem to Birmingham, but I do not expect them to make wholesale changes. My guess is Rogowski would be targeted for Birmingham next year barring injury to someone this year.

I think people think more of Rogowski that I do. I do not see him making it. He has one nice stretch there with 3 dingers within a week, and he did start fairly hot this season and has regressed more than progressed. Highly overrated and I do no know what he ever did to get rated high, other than Hawk mentioned him as a potential hitter one game.

Rogowski is a guy I have always liked. I thought you guys had him ranked too low in the rankings and told you guys that his numbers would improve(he was hitting in the .240's when the rankings came out and is up to .275 now). I like him because he is an athlete that plays 1st and isn't one dimensional(ala Konerko). He is on pace for yet another 20+ SB season, he draws a ton of walks, is very good defensively(from what I hear), and he swings a pretty good stick. I think he has the potential to develop more power as he gets older. The injury last year set him back a little, but he had a very good 2001 year at low A ball(if I am not mistaken) and is starting to heat up this year. At 22 either high A or AA is where a prospect should be depending on his progress. The injury set him back a year, but I really like this guys chances. His numbers remind me of a more athletic Olerod. Keep an eye on this kid. If he continues to stay hot he could break into BA's top 10 Sox prospects for next year.

How about the kid Rivera that the Sox picked up? Hitting .429/3/8 1.286 OPS. I really like what I have seen from this kid in the majors and believe that the Sox have found themselves a very good backup for Olivo for years to come.

Gload has also heated up. If Konerko continues to slump I think the Sox should seriously consider calling up this kid. He has something like a .338 career minor league batting average and from what I saw of him in the few games he played with the Cubs he looks like a very good hitter. Has his average up to .336 and is a doubles machine with 24. He is also a much better athlete then Konerko. Isn't a clog on the basepads, can steal a few bases, and play both the outfield and 1B.

Rogowski basically has had one good year (while repeating low A at that) but has good peripherals (walks, SB's). If he develops power, he could break out like some have hoped. You are correct that the injury has likely set him back. Like I said earlier, next year will be his year to break out at AA or fall back and get lost in the shuffle.

Gload has hit very well. It will still be very tough for him because he is not on the 40-man roster and the Sox have all the 1B/DGH types they need. Someone would have to be moved for him to get a chance.
