CBS 2: 6 other Illini knew of accident, none called 911

This just keeps getting worse and worse, and it's not even over.

When we have major media affiliations having their top investigative reporters following this story, that's when it gets bad. This story seems to be picking up steam rather than going away quietly.

Yep. Every single rumor on this site last week is coming true. And Jamar on the bench last night is absolutely pathetic.

How many DUI's or arrests is this under Squak's patrol?

Smith and McBride, and did Frazier get one?

no. smith and mcbride are responsible for the dui's that have happened under weber's watch.

i don't think this reaches even close to the level of what happened at baylor, so i'll disagree on that point.

I disagree. I read about the Baylor scandal and it seems pretty comparable to me. The crucial part in both is the coaching staff's attempts to cover up or alter the appearance of a crime committed by a player. I've read in print media that an assistant coach was called, and on WSCR yesterday Bernstein said a coach knew within minutes of the Smith getting back to the apartment complex. Now, it's possible for the media to get something wrong, so we'll see what's confirmed as more investigation occurs. But it seems pretty likely a coach knew what happened, and still no call to 911 occurred. The key for Weber will be if he knew. I guess it wouldn't be prudent to guess what happened, but at this point the trajectory of the story seems to me to be a program-killing scandal.

Everything I've heard says that yes, a member of the staff was alerted to what was going on.

*cough* Wayne McClain *cough*

The part I want to know is when was McClain called, what did Jamar tell him, and what did McClain tell Jamar. I doubt we ever know that though. Oh, and i'm not even worried about recruiting or anything like that either, I just want this program cleaned up, and I think Bruce and several players will have to be gone in order to do that, ESPECIALLY after that despicable decision to let Jamar be on the bench last night.

That's the nightmare here. Everything I was told by reliable sources, as well as several other things I never could have imagined, is coming true. Oh, and if not for blind luck here, Carlwell dies and this is just as bad as the Baylor scandal IMO, considering the coverup was in progress when (thank God) that woman called 911 and saved Brian's life.

Anyone at the game hear the crowd boo Jamar when they tried sneakily escorting him to the bench?

There was a decent amount of people in my section that did.

I don't think it's fair to say those 6 guys or whatever knew of the incident without hearing absolutely everything. I'm not against what anyone's said here, maybe we should clean house or what not, but let's wait until everything comes out. Because I'd heard the same rumors as 101 and while true, there are still some facts people need to get straight.

And about abolishing the whole athletic department, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life.

Considering Smith and Carwell are both underage and both were drinking, the source of their alcohol may be in trouble as well. As unfair as it seems, Carwell is underage and was alledgedly drinking, he should get some sort of suspension.

No doubt about it. But lenient Bruce will probably say what happened to him is punishment enough...

Damn right he should. If they find out all them were drinking, hopefully they suspend all of them for some amount of time, Carwell included.

???

Why should a person legal of age be suspended for drinking? That is just stupid.

And so is all of this cancel the season stuff. That is quite possibly the worst thing you could do.

Bruce Weber is a slime ball.

Reading what the media is reporting I have to think most people would agree. The mock funeral thing was just one more example of terrible judgement that reflects poorly on the University of Illinois. Bill Self made a great decision to leave for an institution with some integrity.

I normally consider Mike Downey a hack, but I have to agree with his column

The University of Illinois is an embarassment. Something needs to change.

I have to wonder if you take yourself seriously.

There was some pointless stuff in that article, such as Zook having to defend himself from recruiting rumors. Well gee, anyone could accuse any other school of stuff, and that's supposed to reflect poorly on them. Furthermore, i'm sure illinois it the only school to recruit a player with possible problems, have a recruit drop from the team and/or have off the field problems.

Oh, and no other college has had a basketball player get in a scrap with a bouncer at a bar that has a brutal repuation for their bouncers anyway.

No other school has given a player a "second chance" after he broke any sort of rule or law.

And then there's this amazing gem from that hack: "NCAA rule enforcers aren't outsiders. They are the guardians of scholastic sport, committed to equality and justice for all."

Oh btw, Downey, the NCAA did tell us to scrap "fighting illini" originally.

I've jumped all over this program for what's happened recently, but that article went over the top, as did your comments. He tried to paint Illinois as the most corrupt program in the history of the NCAA, and that's just a joke.

Yeah cause Kansas players never have any problems (rolls eyes)

Well, I'm not aware of anything like this happening at Kansas, but it's not like I follow Kansas basketball so maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it.

I'm just saying, if you read Downey's column, it really seems like Illinois has more issues than other universities. Which is bad, because collegiate athletics in general seems pretty lousy. It's the flagship institution of the state I live in, and for a bunch of reasons I actually care about how it's run. And it's not being run well

You may be right -- maybe I was over the top (and I agree that Downey is generally a hack). I'm just angry, and I do think Illinois needs to change. Anyway, I should probably should stop posting about this until the whole story comes out. I can't wait for the baseball season to start.

I'm as angry as anyone around here (although it's tough to match 101), and I haven't been one of those ridiculous apologizers you have seen or heard the past few days. I'm pretty pissed off about everything the last week (and it seems like with each passing hour it gets worse). I just don't appreciate that hack having so much misinformation and inaccuracies in his article. The Chicago media has never really done a good/fair job covering the Illini, so I don't know why I'd expect anything different now.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 22, 2007 -> 02:57 PM)
There are parallels to Baylor perhaps in how the coaching staff responded, but someone was murdered in the first. In this is would have been manslaughter. This was an accident.

True, however if that woman doesn't see the car and call 911, Brian probably dies out there (since none of the players, including the drunk who crashed the car, had any interest in getting help) and woudn't that be grounds to charge Jamar with 2nd degree murder or something? If not for blind luck, this could be Baylor-esque, instead of the current epic disaster it is.

Oh, and 2 others things:

1. If you want Carlwell suspended for underage drinking, that's cool. Just make sure that you are consistent, and the 90 percent of college athletes that drink prior to being 21 are all suspended too.

2. The Downey column is completely over the top. The football program's only crime right now is people assuming they cheat since they are recruiting well, they don't even have any legit rumors against them right now (if that even makes sesnse) and the Alaeze thing is a stretch since he hasn't been in the program for over 5 months.
