Or someone can just be making a general comment about a pitcher after some of the recent things being said about him in the press. It would be amazing if Floyd can be a better than average 5th starter. However, I don't think he has a great chance of succeeding if he starts off in the majors right away. If he is trying to become a sinker pitcher, then I would like to see him master it in the majors before throwing him right into the fire. The best news to come out of today is that Uribe is back and playing. Hopefully that situation is in the past.

Here's a question I have: why are the Sox so scared to give Fields the chance to win the LF position? With Crede in the plans for this year, and with other players who could fill in at 3rd base if needed, why not see if Fields can adapt quickly to the position?

Let's see you don't want a pitcher in the majors who hasn't proved anything however you want a hitter who isn't proven in the majors to play a position he has never played before in professional baseball?

You must rank defense lower than you do speed on the hierarchy of baseball skills.

I know you really dislike Floyd but to start a guy in a position he hasn't played before and expect anything good is just silly. Remeber the early years of Lee in LF?

Fields is a good athlete, and compared to what Pods offers defensively in LF, I would gladly like to see Fields get a chance to prove he can play out there.

Why not give Fields more time to blossom (offensively and defensively in LF) at AAA though? How do we know his year last year wasn't a fluke? I mean, it was his first REALLY good offensive year in his minor league career (and afaik, he's never played LF regularly), and I'd rather give him the time he needs to prove he's ready for the majors as opposed to rushing him and potentially screwing him up mentally.

That's why I suggested we give him the chance right now to win the spot, instead of just hoping that Pods comes back from his injury. We all know that Pods is a very below average player if he's not 100 pct, and it's questionable how healthy he'll be during the first few months of the season. I don't care how crappy the coaching was during Winter Ball....it's inexcusable that Fields didn't get more playing time in the outfield this offseason.

Hey, while I'm all for following spring training in the hopes of getting a feel for how a player will look in the upcoming season, aren't we jumping the gun just a tad here? Fields went 2 for 2---let's move him to a new position and make him the starter! Floyd walked a guy and gave up a double before twisting his ankle---dump the bum, he'll never be anything! Ok, so as ST goes on, I can understand trying to make some observations about how a player looks. But this is just an intra-squad game, for chrissakes.

That being said, hey, if people that are actually there at ST want to chime in, I'd love to hear it. I'd prefer some personal observations (Player X's bat looks a little slow, Player Y has a nice breaking ball) over some overanalysis of some player's stat line for one game.

A better example could have been used here, since a lot of people think this about Floyd already, regardless of his performance/injury :P

I do agree though on jumping the gun, but what do you expect? Baseball's back, I can understand people's joy :)

You act like this is the first time either thing has been suggested. The intrasquad game really has nothing to do with any of the talk in this thread, these same ideas (Fields to start in LF, Floyd blows) have been kicked around for quite a while now.

Doesn't have much to do with this thread, but might as well stick it here since most members are viewing this topic.

Looks like we're expected to post the fourth worst record in the majors next season. OMG, we'll finally get a Top 10 pick in the amateur draft according to BP!!!!11 Although we all know once the Sox get a Top 5 pick, whenever that day arrives, the draft will be universally panned as one of the worst in recent memory. :P

I'd like to buy some smack from whoever came up with that projection.

I'm not confident about our chances of reaches the playoffs, but suggesting we're the second worst team in the American league -- even behind Seattle and Baltimore -- is a little bit ridiculous.

Nice. Looks like we are going to have our worst team in 12 years. Do they project most of our lineup to DIE in PECOTA? Are we going to have to play with only 7 people in the lineup (though at times it seemed like we did last year - zing!). I mean seriously. Half our team would have to get hurt in order for that to happen.

We had an awful 8-9-1 for most of the year and still scored 850+ runs (can't remember how far over we were. I'm almost certain we were over though). Haha.

If we're going to be anywhere near as bad as this projection believes, I hope we struggle early, which will force KW to get something in return for Buehrle at the deadline.

I know this won't surprise many people, but I agree with you.

I believe the worst possible position we can be in around the ASB is ~10 games back of the division and ~7 behind the wild card. You figure at such a point, several starters and perhaps positional players are struggling. The argument will be, for keeping the team entact, "they can always rebound, as past seasons have proven (cite numbers);" or "here's another white flag trade!"

If they're obviously mediocre in the 1st half, and all we have is optimism, then we're better off trading Buehrle. If we can't get a good deal in return (which I question with Williams), then merely keep him and receive the draft pick.

Those standings don't seem that bad, except for the Sox. They probably did all their predictions, then had to make the numbers add up and gave the Sox the remaining Wins and Losses.

If they do a white flag sale, I wonder if they will move Crede or one of the others in their last year (Dye / Gooch). They just need to hang on to the table-setter because he will definitely rebound.

KW was supposedly into McCarthy's sister or girlfriend, and McCarthy was pissed about it. That's why he was traded.

It's completely preposterous, and thank you Ginger for taking a shot at such a stupid rumor.

It probably is a preposterous rumor, but McCarthy's recent comments on his relationship with KW did sort of imply that this rumor could actually be true.

It did? I've known about this rumor before, and after reading the Sun-Times article by Chris DeLuca (which you're probably referencing) I didnt' come away with anything.

If it were true, it would have been leaked by now. Whether by an anonymous source within the White Sox or Texas Rangers.
