Jenks and Floyd signed to 1-year deals?

Since both players are still under full team control (not yet eligible for arbitration), they are offered minimum or near minimum contracts that are accepted. I guess formality is the best way of putting it but the Sox were at no time at risk of losing these players. Same goes for the other 20 or so players they signed to 1 year deals today.

I'm sure there's much better ways of explaining it than this.

the organization gets to decide how much these guys make. They write the contracts, give the year's salary, and then the player has to sign the deal; thus, they signed 1 year deals.

The Sox get to do this for the first 3 years of a player's service time. After those 3 years, it either goes to arbitration or some agreed upon contract between the player and team (and they can give as many years after those last 3 as the two agree upon). After that, the player is free to sign with any team in the majors.

The Sox never had the possiblity of losing these. It's really nothing you even need to read into quite honestly.

The league determines each year what the minimum salary is, I think it was 340 or 350K in 06 and like 330K in 05 so in increases each year by 10-20K or so.

But the team can pay the player more than that, for instance Ryan Howard is about to become the highest paid non-arbitration eligible player ever. I think they were saying he would get a $2 million contract for this season.

If Gil Meche can make 11 million, Howard should be making 60 mil.
