TLAK
Gavin Floyd's effort yesterday brings us to one appearance from each of the 5th starter candidates. Here's the numbers. While one appearance doesn't mean much, at least nobody's arm fell off and each one got some guys out. It'll take a couple weeks for these guys to sort themselves out, fun to watch. That funky motion
I like the fact that Haeger didnt walk anyone.
maggsmaggs
I still feel Danks is the best option. Floyd is a bust for a reason, Danks is an up-and-comer. I know that it would be nice to get him some more AAA, but the kid has the mental makeup to succeed in the bigs even if he starts off a little rough. ShoeLessRob
Gio Gonzalez not in the race? From everything I have heard all the coaches are real high on him and he pitched a perfect inning the other day. I know he's still young and could use 1 - 2 more years in the minors but you never know what Ozzie might do...
DrunkBomber
I havent gotten to hear or see any of the Sox games yet, how was Haegers Knuckler, I thought I heard or read it wasnt on so far?

That also could be because of that AZ dry air.
bjm676
Still can't believe Broadway is in the race. I have a feeling he's going to need a little more seasoning in the minors.
Balta1701
QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Mar 4, 2007 -> 10:12 AM) Still can't believe Broadway is in the race. I have a feeling he's going to need a little more seasoning in the minors. I think that it's entirely possible that each and every pitcher on that list could benefit from at least a few months in AAA.
striker
From what I saw today I really liked Danks. He had great stuff and a real smooth delivery. Gio didn't look so smooth but has good stuff. He needs at least another year in the majors and really needs to work on his changeup. Haeger didn't have a good outing but I still like him as a 5th starter or long relief/spot starter. He did awesome last year after getting called back up so you know he can get the job done. I didn't see how Floyd looked yesterday so I'm still up in the air with him, Masset also. I defininitely like Danks more than McCarthy, so Masset is just a plus. I don't miss Freddy.

Fixed. :-) It is nice to see these guys in action. Danks looks like the real deal, and Floyd was not that bad either. I wouldn't mind having Danks or Floyd as the 5th starter and Haeger in the bullpen to spot start or come in for long relief. He would actually be the 6th starter (if needed). It would be hilarious to sandwich Haeger's knuckler in the bullpen between Sisco, Mac, or Thornton, then close with Jenks. Hitters would have a hell of a time adjusting from 65 mph knucklers to 100 mph fastballs.
FlaCWS
I'd put Masset in the pen, and give Danks and Broadway another year of seasoning at AAA. The best thing for Floyd may be a year in AAA, as well, to try and rediscover himself. Guess what I'm saying is that I want to see Haeger win the job. Wedge
Revolutionary thinking: trade Vazquez for whatever we can get for him. Start Floyd and Danks.
RockRaines
Haeger looks good, especially in the AZ air which is murder on knucklers usually. The only run he gave up was on a fastball today, which is very encouraging. He will walk alot of batters and because of that I think he is best situated in the rotation. In fact, I believe that he should be the leading candidate for the 5th spot at this point.

Assuming they don't allow any baserunners, 3 different batters would come up in the past 3 innings.

I think Haegar has a great shot to get a bullpen role, and I think the Sox would like to see Denks get another season of minor league development. Baines3
Haeger had his knuckler going pretty good against the Cubs. Although I think that Gavin will have to have a really bad spring for him not to get the 5th starter job.

You talk about him like he has no talent whatsoever.Vasquez does have potential to have a good season and its not like hes our ace.He has movement on his fastball, better than most on the curve ball, and is unhittable for the first 5 innings.I will take my chances with him as our #4. Flash Tizzle
QUOTE(whitesox1976 @ Mar 5, 2007 -> 12:43 AM) Haeger had his knuckler going pretty good against the Cubs. Although I think that Gavin will have to have a really bad spring for him not to get the 5th starter job. I know people continually say this, but why? Because Williams traded for him? Because he doesn't throw a knuckleball? If the spring statistics obviously favor Haeger, there should be no reason to take Floyd. What has he proven? Atleast Haeger has respectable minor league statistics to fall back on. Floyd has nothing but a high draft and Cooper's magic pixy dust.
