And trying to figure out why we only had 5 hits over 9 with the pitching they tossed out there today. We pretty much had the primo lineup today.

5 hits is just bad with our lineup.

/insert spring training excuse

I understand it is spring training but it is becoming a tad alarming that we are not really hitting this spring. This was what cost us in September last year. Need I bring up the Boston series. This team over the past few years has shown that they can me maddeningly inconsistent. They are showing it again thus far in the first 11 games.

It can be hard at times not to worry about some of the results that we see in ST, but this team not hitting is the last thing I am worried about when the season starts. I just really don't have much of a concern about the lineup. Gooch-Thome-Kong-Dye-Crede are all going to hit this season.

I was happy to see Anderson have a good day(Farmer said the DP ball he hit into was harder hit than the HR ball) and seeing Danks and Gio put up solid innings made it a good day.

The hits will come.

I worry about situational hitting, because that is something we havent been too good with in a while. We can score when we hit home runs, and we will hit a lot. But the difference in this team making the playoffs, and watching it is how we handling getting the runners in when we need a hit to the right side, a single up the middle or a sac fly. In the 2nd half of every year, we struggle because we press and try to hit home runs to score. This is when nonames and never-were's 4 hit our team through 5. Then we hear about how X pitcher had a great game, and how no one in the majors could hit them if they could. The next week X pitcher gets rocked for 8 runs and barely gets out of the first. We have a very powerful lineup that should just dominate this league. We have a propensity as a lot of home run hiting teams get, to overly rely on it. And then to try and hit one when the game is on the line. Sometimes a liner that barely makes its over the infield is more important than the solo home run earlier in the game that was hit on the Dan Ryan.

If he's the best bet to put wins on the board, he better be starting in the bigs. Some players can handle "being rushed" (Bonderman certainly has survived). I assume the worst case would be Danks heads north and gets slammed and is repalced in the rotation by someone like Haeger. I would hope that Danks would have the resilience to survive and pull himself together in AAA. If he doesn't, that's a sign he's not the guy Williams thinks he is.

Just for reference, McCarthy debuted when he was 21 (Danks is 21 now) and got hit hard. And then he came back from AAA to be lights out down the stretch in 2005. If McCarthy could do it, Danks should be able to as well.

Bondy also lost ~20 games his rookie season.

Well, Danks has talent.

Floyd? Not so much.

Are you kidding me Flash? Floyd doesn't have talent? Have you seen this guy throw. He has plus stuff.

And it's a valid concern. Thats funny you mention the 2nd half, as last night as work, I was looking at the Sox schedule, and thinking, "Well, I hope we rack up some wins in late June and early July, because we are going to need them down the stretch.." The 2nd half struggles have become a major issue, and one I hope we don't see this year. We couldn't afford to do it last season, and we certainly won't be able to do it this season.

I still think that our inability to hit better situationally cost us more than the 5th starter did in 04. I still have nightmares of Valentin and Carlos Lee falling over trying to hit a home run late in the game in August against the Twins. I still remember the quote with KW with Carlos. Let the 3 thumpers go for the dong. The rest of the team should be working the count, trying to hit line drives and doing the little things to get the runner in. My biggest fear this year, is that when the clock strikes August we start getting shut down by crap pitchers with a 7 ERA again spotting the ball low and away.

Danks, like I have said before, is our number one option for the fifth spot. I don't care how old he is, where he has pitched before, but he attacks the strike zone and doesn't walk batters. His attitude and baseball IQ are second to none and his stuff has been very good as well. If the season started today (which I know it doesnt) he should be our #5. There is a reason Gavin Floyd had a 7+ ERA (or something like that) in the NL last year, he just isn't very good. Danks has the right mind set where if he struggles, he comes right back and fights again like nothing happened.

Well, they could still be right. I'm just a guy looking at numbers on baseballcube. I'd assume seeing him pitch in person & knowing something about baseball would put the scouts opinions ahead of mine. John Sickels has been pretty optimistic about Floyd as recently as last year. And 5 spring training innings is too soon to say that Floyd won't contribute to the Sox. I'm not optimistic, but it's not like he's been getting shelled so far (like Vazquez, Garland, and Contreras have...).

What was that ...humility ?? On this board ? Acknowledging the Sox network of coaches scouts etc. might have more knowledge then fans, statheads, armchair gm's and fantasy geeks is forbidden on this board !

I agree armchair GM'ing has no place on the internet, blind faith in coaches and scouts is what it's all about, discussion should really be limited to how awesome everyone inside the Sox organization is and how they never ever make any mistakes personnel wise. I mean if they know so much more than all of the idiots on the board then what the hell is the point of second guessing any of the decisions they make or having a differing opinion?

Oh yeah and stats are evil.

Well, I hope you noticed that acknowledging they know more than me didn't stop me from disagreeing with Kenny Williams about the utility of acquiring Gavin Floyd :)
