Soxy
I got the soundtrack for the movie "Once" the major musician in it is the lead singer of the Irish Band The Frames. It's great--lovely melancholy music. I love it. I also am really digging the OBC recording of "Spring Awakening" it's very un-Broadway-y. A little raunchy--but the music is great. GoRowand33
"The Stage Names"-Okkervil River's new album that was released today is one of the better albums of the year it's not as good as black sheep boy, but it's a good follow-up nonetheless Edited August 7, 2007 by GoRowand33
The Critic
Now that Ed's dried out, Van Halen's going to try again to get the Roth reunion tour off the ground. They're expected to announce a 50-date tour sometime next week. Ed's kid is still going to play bass, so it's still not a 100% "classic Van Halen" reunion. Can't say I blame them for milking the cash cow - the Police have drawn more than 66 million bucks already on their tour, and VH could expect to do pretty well also. I won't go, if only because David Lee Roth annoys the hell out of me and I don't think he's half the performer he was in their glory days.

Find me one act that doesn't fit that bill of sucking but living in nice homes on that list. I wonder sometimes if it isn't easier to find an audience of hundreds or thousands than it is to find an audience of millions? And what about the poor twit whose style and voice is exactly what mainstream America wants? It's entertainment.
Kid Gleason
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the Pop acts that the people actually do like. I just think that most of Pop becomes Pop due to pure laziness on the publics part. People don't want to actually search out music that they might like. The industry then hands the people a very generic and bland form of another band. I think what offends me the most though is when I open up a CD by some major act and I look at the writing credits. Pretty much every single song is written by somebody else. I'm not saying than the artist, I'm talking each song has a different writer, and none of the people actually PLAY on the album. My wife though, she loves Pop and radio stuff. She is exactly the person I am talking about. She doesn't want to go to the trouble of finding something else out there. She turns on her radio, and away she goes. She lets the programers pick who she likes. She's happy with that. Me? I don't like the drumming in Pop, nor the lack of cool guitar fills, nor the missing adlibs or vocal bits. She used to think I was ripping on HER when I would have bad things to say about the radio/MTV. I told her I didn't really care what she liked. What made me mad was seeing so many bands being created by labels now. They've always been there, but it seems more prevelant now (at the time, not so much nowdays). But I told her in all reality, as long as she loved MUSIC, that's really all I cared about. As for a voice the public likes, I always respected Barry Manilow, even when it was cool to hate him. I also never understood attacking people like Rob Thomas. He plays Pop because he has said he grew up listening to Pop, it's what he loves. If you love Pop, then that is cool. I have a problem with people who dumb stuff down.
Rex Kickass
When I was in College, I had the privilege of being the station's Music Director. I got to pick our station's music. And it spoiled me rotten. So when I listen to the radio, I just wish I was that station's director. Not so much because I think I could do a better job, but because the ability to discover new acts was so easy to come by!
bmags
nonetheless i'll take the pop of today over 10 years ago. Kelly clarkson, nelly furtado, rihanna, Justin timberlake are so much more listenable to me than that boy band s*** that was happening then. Even some pop emo i can handle more than rap/rock. I'll take fall out boy over kid rock. And hell i like JT and kelly clarkson and quite a bit of nelly. Timbaland entering pop music was good for everyone. The Critic
The outdoor festivals are not my thing at all. Even stuff like Summerfest, which is mostly free bands, I try to avoid. If I only wanted to see two bands, they'd be playing at the same time on opposite ends of the field/lot/park/whatever. The last one I tried was the Warped Tour, when it happened at the United Center's parking lot. YIKES. All day, on blacktop, in July, in 90+ degree heat.......never again. Give me a dark, coldish dumpy club, two or three bands appearing on the same stage, a couple cold alcoholic beverages, and THAT's how I like(d) to see shows. Kid Gleason
Yeah, but you plan to rectify that on September 1st...right? Just got off the phone with The Failures. Great guys. Holiday weekend, no family obligations until Monday the 3rd, got the thumbs-up from the Mrs. - it's all good. September is going to be a big month for me, entertainment-wise - Gamblers on the 1st, Rush on the 8th and George Lopez on the 22nd. I can't remember the last month with 3 "events". There are so many areas in our lives to devote our resources. If I can find music I like with almost no investment of time, that works for me. If you have to dig deeper, that's cool too. And I really understand the thrill of the hunt and the exclusive feel of finding your own stuff. Way back in the dark ages of the late 70's and early 80's I was a fairly decent cross country runner. The only racing flats and spikes I would wear could only be imported from England. They simply were not available here. Why the masses would line up for Nike and Adidas or possibly Etonic was a joke to me when clearly the best stuff was over there. Give me an opening and I could tell you ever feature of that hand sewn vamp and lighter weight uppers. You would look at me like I was nuts and drop by the mall, try on some shoes, and run off, happy as a lark. I'd stand there lamenting you don't know what you are missing. I laugh at the elitist snobs that as soon as a band has a following that can't fit into mini-van, they are branded as sell outs and they go off to search out another band. I also love them for it because they often times bring back some cool stuff. Possibly not new to y'all, but Kings of Convenience was like that for me a few years ago. Kid Gleason
It's not so much the random public that gets my ire up, but more like the radio stations and record labels. It used to be that a radio station would give you the opportunity to hear something new that isn't a major. I don't know, I don't care to come across as a snob, as I am far from it. You can ask anybody and they will probably tell you that I don't get on a high horse about my music compared to yours or somebody elses. In all honesty a band like Jet piss me off more than a Britney Spears does. Jet walks in the world of Rock and Roll, but they sanitize it to a disgusting degree, but the press and radios proclaim them the next BIG THING in RnR, when in reality there are thousands of bands that can poop all over them. But since they are so A-B-C in their execution, the majors lap them up and spit them back out on the public because a band like (for instance) Riverboat Gamblers or Kansas City f**gots are too much for the delicate public to handle. Though those bands are exactly what RnR is all about. But Britney and her kind? I have no idea, it ain't my "cup of tea" so I don't spew my stupid opinion about it because I would be wrong and I have no real idea of what I am talking about. Same reason why I will never engage in a discussion about Rap or Hip Hop. It's a world I know nothing about.
