Harry Chappas
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:51 AM) My neighbor went on sunday. Descriptions of the day leave me wondering why the heck people go to those things. Right on. Got free tickets for the weekend and went Sunday night to see Pearl Jam. I thought it was one of their better shows. It was way to crowded though. I am never going back again. Left home pretty buzzed got home sober as a judge. Not the way I wanted it to work. Their set list was better than I thought it would be but the crowd was a bunch of jag offs that seemed to want to fight and show their girl friend how tough they were. My buddy was confronted by some doucebag and when the guy realized it was going to be four on one he and his lady simmered down. Right when I was getting past the crowd scene and really thinking the show was going ot be awesome they brought out a wounded Iraqi vet and went on a very long winded political rant. I see their point but by their means the Germans would have annihilated most of the world in their "Free World" it really turned me off. The sound was much better than I expected. Anti-war people really make me laugh, it is so simple for them. Peace.

Texsox
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 02:58 PM) because a band like (for instance) Riverboat Gamblers or Kansas City f**gots are too much for the delicate public to handle. I believe that most of the world would eat up stuff by these bands if given the opportunity to hear them. But the industries chose to make the stuff safe instead of giving people the rebellion of Rock. Look at what has happened to Punk. For crying out loud you can get "Punk" bands on Kids Bop!!! First time I saw Avril Levine told me all I needed to know with "Punk Fashion", as she stood there in her video with the sleeves on her arms. You know, a t-shirt but with a long sleeve shirts sleeves cut off and being worn by themselves? Oh you know, the type of thing Johnny Thunders used to wear to cover the track marks. Gosh, ya know, I hope I'm not coming across as one of those internet psychos who obsess about meaningless crap. I don't sit here and stew about this stuff all day. Gosh, ya know, I hope I'm not coming across as one of those internet psychos who obsess about meaningless crap. I don't sit here and stew about this stuff all day. And as soon as the world eats the stuff those bands are playing, they are viewed as sell outs, and the real psychos go out searching for the next big thing. Which I am cool with. It just isn't my hobby. Last Friday at Jackies in South Padre Island I had a blast listening to a power trio with a lead singer as old as I am playing cover after cover of classic rock hits. It was almost impossible to stump them with any top 40 rock song from the 60s and 70s. What they didn't know cold, they faked well enough That to me is the spirit of rock and roll. No pretense, no rules, just play what your having fun with. Could I find stuff I like better if I spent hours researching? Of course. Is it an investment I choose to make? No. Time is our most precious resource and we each have priorities in how we spend that time. The two hours I spent looking for a waistbelt that would better fit a friend of mine would be like nails on a chalkboard to you, but I was so wrapped up in what innovations have come out in the past couple years, I couldn't stop. Silly, I know. I believe people get too wrapped up in the labels. That Kids Bop stuff isn't Punk, we know that. So why worry about it? Pat Boone did a heavy metal album, it wasn't but it's so crappy, it's good. I don't believe anyone can have better "taste" in anything. Film, art, music, food, plastics. They can have additional expertise and understanding in a field, but your taste in music is just that, your taste. You are much better travelled musically than I, but if we both enjoy a few hours of listening to "our music" we have both achieved what we are after. I spend a lot of time researching outdoor gear to find what will work for me. I also enjoy finding a bargain. My "taste" isn't better than yours if you find a backpack you like. Does that make sense? You talked about the fact that people would eat a lot of these bands up if given the opportunity. I say the same thing all the time. I'll be listening to a band that is really rocking me and I'll be like why isn't this band huge. Why aren't people just going crazy for this band. I think though it's something that can be argued and talked about forever. I just try and worry about the music I like and support the bands that I like and not worry about the others to much. Cause it can be frustrating.
Kid Gleason
Well, that's why I started my 'zine. It's a way for me to do what I can for the bands I really enjoy. There are many perks to it, and many pitfalls. Tex, I'm not pointing fingers at the public so much as at the industry. I don't expect my wife to spend hours at a time on the 'net looking for music. I hope the people who are supposed to be in charge of finding the music actually spread the music. There are people who make a living finding these bands, the problem is the radio world doesn't let the DJ think for themselves anymore. They days of "payola" are supposed to be dead, but they're more alive than ever before, it's just that the big labels are the only ones controlling it. I used to hate cover bands. Then I started seeing cover bands I actually do enjoy. Ones like the one you mentioned. The ones I don't like are the ones who only are playing to make the money. I love the ones that are doing covers of the music they love. One of my buddies is in a Metal cover band, and they sell BIG. They do covers though that nobody else is doing, and the ones that they love. A band like you mentioned obviously loves the "Classic Rock" thing. Texsox
My cousin Jeff is the founder of Hairbangers Ball, so I know cover bands I have no problem with guys who want to make a few bucks playing in a band. It's all about the entertainment for me. Not every musician can write music and not every writer can sing. Although it is cool when they happily coexist. I know when I turn on the radio, especially in a small market, I entered the WalMart of music. But that's cool. I don't have hours to waste to find that 10 minutes I'll really enjoy. Sell me the happy crap, I'll keep buying. And in the end, we'll both get what we want out of music. And nothing changes if the radio station starts playing obscure stuff. They are still showing the hubris to decide what I will like. No matter who does the programming for you, you will be unhappy. You want control of what you listen to. You will happily invest the time and resources to find those great tunes that I will miss. I'll spend that same time hiking down some sweaty trail and find a vista that touches my soul and keeps me human. And when we finally get together, over a few beers, I'll show you pictures of places you wouldn't otherwise see and you'll play some great rock I would have missed, and life is good

Felix
Anyone listen to the Raconteurs? I've been listening to them a lot lately, and I must say, they're pretty damn good. They've got a classic feel (sort of like Led Zeppelin), but also mix in a new, indie rock taste. I'm not really one for indie rock bands, but they do a pretty good job of blending the two, and are a good listen. Plus, they've convinced me that Jack White is a musical genius. bmags
I thought the raconteurs were pretty bad considering who was in the band. I deleted that album. i went to lolla on sat. b/c of free tickets. The Critic
The first time I heard LCD Soundsystem, it was that "Daft Punk" song, and I hated it. I never gave them a second thought after that. Well, I just heard a few songs off of Sound Of Silver, and I really like them. I've heard Watch The Tapes, North American Scum and All My Friends. Good stuff! GoRowand33
The new Akron/Family release "Love is Simple" leaked yesterday It's less lo-fi than they're other released, and the cleanest sounding, not to say it doesn't have its fair share of instrumental freakouts. I think its worse than their s/t and split album, but better than meek warrior One of the better releases of the year so far

Kid Gleason
I guess the VH1 news conference for Van Halen was last night and the tour kicks off next month. Obviously this is still not to be believed until the first note is struck. So, what do you think, have they just been laying low and rehearsing for the past few months, or are they just going to "wing it"? One month from now doesn't seem like a whole heck of a lot of time to launch this thing. DATES: 9/27 — Charlotte, NC @ Bobcats Arena »9/29 — Greensboro, NC @ Coliseum »10/1 — Philadelphia, PA @ Wachovia Center »10/7 — Toronto, ON @ Air Canada Centre »10/10 — Cleveland, OH @ Quicken Loans Arena »10/14 — Indianapolis, IN @ Conseco Fieldhouse »10/16 — Chicago, IL @ Allstate Arena »10/18 — Chicago, IL @ United Center »10/22 — Auburn Hills, MI @ Palace of Auburn Hills »10/24 — Minneapolis, MN @ Target Center »10/26 — Kansas City, MO @ Sprint Center »10/28 — St. Louis, MO @ Scottrade Center »10/30 — Boston, MA @ TD Banknorth Garden »11/3 — East Rutherford, NJ @ Continental Airlines Arena »11/13 — New York, NY @ Madison Square Garden »11/20 — Los Angeles, CA @ Staples Center »11/23 — Glendale, AZ @ Jobing.com Arena »11/25 — San Diego, CA @ Cox Arena »11/27 — Sacramento, CA @ Arco Arena »11/29 — San Jose, CA @ HP Pavilion »12/1 — Portland, OR @ Rose Garden »12/3 — Seattle, WA @ Key Arena »12/5 — Vancouver @ GM Place »12/9 — Edmonton, AB @ Rexall Palace »12/11 — Calgary, AB @ Pengrowth Saddledome Interesting things in the VH1 article: The 25 song set-list was picked by Wolfgang. That could actually be a cool thing, bringing out songs that the band might not think to play. Valerie Bertanelli was in the audience for the announcement. Maybe this means that Eddie is clean and has his head screwed back on.
