I've seen that technique in a few videos before, and I seem to remember seeing something about how it was done. I don't think it's quite as much work as it sounds, but even if it is, some bands and/or directors will go through a lot to make a video that will stand out. In case you don't know who they are (I'm guessing you do, though), they're old-school Chicago punk from the days of Naked Raygun, Rights Of The Accused, Articles of Faith, Pegboy and so on.
