Children drink alcohol in front of adults and police officers. Thousands of people fill a neighborhood that isn't made for thousands of people, and then they go into random yards and piss all over their trees, bushes, side of the wall and all those things. Wonder how many people will be alcoholics when they grow up in part because they were taught that drinking heavily on St. Patty's Day when you're, say, fourteen years old is okay, which is something I particularly witnessed: a girl that age chugging shots while a policeman cheered her on. I have seen some high school kids, some college kids and some adults imbibe and some get stupid, but I haven't seen children getting drunk or this Sodom and Gomorrah that you speak of. Everyone doesn't get pissed on the sidewalks. Do some people get out of hand, sure just like any event. There are neighborhood parties, and its a fun event. I doubt if there is a correlation in alcoholism and St. Patrick's day. And to be really honest in America its a different celebration than it is in Ireland, where its mainly a religious holiday. Now of course Dublin and a couple of other cities have figured out that there is some money to be made and have started to commercialize it a bit. Police officers responsible for patrolling the area of Beverly, are -- in most port -- from the area. They're rather lenient to under aged drinkers in public. However, that's definitely not the case for people attempting to enter neighborhood bars without proper identification. I wasn't there this year, but I can speak from experience (as could SSI and others) that it's FAR different now than the past. Much more tame, if you can believe it. Arrest figures prove as much. I recall in the Daily Southtown a police blotter indicating arrests (under 50, IIRC) were less than last year and nearly 500% less than five years ago. Not one DUI was tied to the event. I don't believe many condone the consumption of alcohol in minors. The problem is, how can you prevent it? Especially in an event renowned as one of the largest neighborhood festivities in the nation. If I were living in the area and knew my children were attending the parade, I'd at least ask them to drink responsibly. No driving; know when to stop drinking; and resist entering the vehicles of others who may be intoxicated. southsideirish71 Posted March 18, 2007 Author Share Posted March 18, 2007 Well it was a grand St. Patrick's day, and probably a bit boring for the most of you. I watched my son today as my wife was working, and then we went to mass and then to dinner at my in-laws for some corned beef, cabbage and champ. Later on I promised my brother-in-law that I would go with him to the Kerry Piper to see some band play, and make fun of him attempting to pick up drunken girls. Just got back from Kerry Piper in Willowbrook. The outside tent, was overcrowded and too smoky. People were having a good time, and there was a few people drunk, but nothing out of control. I went there to see the Larkin and Moran Brothers play, who put on a good show. I didn't touch a drop of alcohol as I was the designated driver and I figure that I was a sitting duck for a pull over. Watching my brother-in-law shoot, and miss a few times was enough entertainment for me for the night. His selection was a bit missing this time as it seemed that either the girls were engaged or married, the other ones either had their own gravitational pull like most small planets do, or they were on the scary side.
