fathom
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 10:13 PM) Mack has been awesome this spring. Triple for Rob. I It's just too bad he can't be our starting LF.
Flash Tizzle
QUOTE(Capn12 @ Mar 18, 2007 -> 04:11 PM) Not to make excuses, but the strike zone kinda sucks today for pitchers. I think Danks and Floyd both looked pretty good That is an excuse. Conditions such as weather and umpiring crew won't always be perfect just so we can fairly evaluate players. Conditions such as weather and umpiring crew won't always be perfect just so we can fairly evaluate players. And we won't be playing in the open air of the Arizona desert again either, so I kinda think it does have an influence on things. Just saying that as a 5th started, I don't have a problem with either Danks or Floyd really, but if I have my choice, its still Danks based mostly on wanting 2 lefties in the rotation. Dick Allen
I just went through this gamethread. Its interesting that Wells gets hammered and he sucks and needs to retire, and Danks gets hammered and the wind is blowing out and the umpires have a small strike zone. Danks is young. He's going to struggle if he makes the team. He's struggled initially on just about every level and then became good. That's a good sign, but remember the jump to the major leagues is the biggest leap you can take. If the White Sox are relying on good results from him in the major leagues in 2007, the offense better be the best in team history. I really hope KW is looking for a 5th starter outside the organization. I think Lieber would be perfect. He struggled last year, but he was hurt. It just boggles my mind how KW put us in a position where we didn't have a sure-fire candidate for the 5th starter spot coming into this season. It's as if he learned nothing at all from the 2004 season. I really hope he wasn't expecting Floyd or Danks to be a bonafide starter in the majors this year. BearSox
Floyd has looked pretty good so far. but like someone else pointed out, I would wish he would attack the strike zone more often.

It's as if he learned nothing at all from the 2004 season. I really hope he wasn't expecting Floyd or Danks to be a bonafide starter in the majors this year. Actually, from all I read, KW has been expecting big things out of Floyd, and even thought if McCarthy had stayed that Floyd could have beat him out. Danks wasn't considered at first but he has provided some good results. Also, this is much different then 04, as in 04 we only had garbage for the 5th spot. Now, we have several young talented arms. But we'll be playing 81 games in the homerun haven called US Cellular Field. You can't completely negate the results of today based upon thin Arizona air and assume it'd be drastically different up North. Wind and humidity are huge factors in Chicago. Danks just pitched poorly. I won't take any excuses to justify it. The important point is now to determine in future starts whether it was isolated, or perhaps proof he could use more seasoning in AAA.

And putting so much faith in Floyd was a huge mistake by KW. BTW, our organization didn't think that guys like Arnie Munoz and Felix Diaz were garbage back in 2004. Actually, some of the guys we brought up then had more success in the minors than Danks has, and especially Floyd. Of course, Danks is young, and should be better than those guys in the long run. It's as if he learned nothing at all from the 2004 season. I really hope he wasn't expecting Floyd or Danks to be a bonafide starter in the majors this year. He was boasting a couple weeks ago how everyone would see why he did what he did by March 15th. Well, we're waiting............................... The thing is, the Sox need a guy that can give them at least 5 innings in the 5th slot, or you'll kill your bullpen especially if Buerhle doesn't snap all the way back. You could get away with a little less when Buerhle was a lock to give you at least 6 and usually more. Now, with Contreras the #1, he gets into high pitch counts and doesn't go as long as Buerhle did, and theoretically he should be up next after the #5 guy most of the time. Plus Buerhle may not be the bullpen savior he was before in his slot.

But with respect to the strike zone, I was speaking of Floyd. Hes working behind alot of hitters today, but the strike zone isn't helping. I think Floyd has looked pretty good. The 2nd time through the Pads lineup, Danks was struggling to fool anyone.
