Garcia's line from tonight -- 4.2IP, 7H, 4ER, 2BB, 8SO, 2HR, 5.65ERA.

His numbers this season have hardly been stellar, but I'm still wondering how the package we aquired has helped this team in the short run. Williams did mention the trade was made to benefit the present and future, yet, I'm not seeing anything on the roster to indicate as much.

When Williams made that statement, I think that he fully expected Gavin Floyd to beat out John Danks for the 5th spot in the rotation. He was wrong, now it is more of a deal for the future.

Who knows though, if MacDougal or Masset should go down with any sort of injury(knock on wood), Gavin Floyd may be the guy that Williams calls up.

It's true that Tavares isn't that special, he's sort of like Pods but with the glove to play CF. But that wouldn't have been bad, as the Sox could then have ditched Pods and brought in someone that could hit to play LF. It's pure conjecture at this point, but I think Hirsh will be better than Gio or Floyd. He racked up great numbers in the PCL and is doing well with the Rox now.

Gio is off to a good start, but it's possible the park in BHAM is hiding the gopherballitis he had in Reading last season. If Gio moves up to Charlotte and proves he can pitch in that bandbox, I'll start thinking he might do something in the big leagues. I hope the Sox move him up soon. At this point, there's no sense wasting any of pitches in his arm at AA.

He leads the league in strikeouts not sure if the park can be attributed to that (maybe they have bad lights). Also has a 1.69 ERA. teams will loo at this in July and give up somethign good/decent for him which we could use right now.

Garland was the pitcher the Astros were interested in IIRC. If the Sox hadn't traded Garcia, they could have moved Garland instead. I think Garland is a decent pitcher (although his lack of velocity this year is troubling), but Hirsh looks like he might be very good....

Trading Garland for Hirsh doesn't improve the team as long as Garcia is still in the rotation. It doubtfully improves the team anyway.

Trading Garland for Hirsch would have been flat stupid. The two guys are practically the same age and Garland already has a world series win and a couple 16 plus win seasons. Moving Garcia made sense, he was old, due to be a FA at the end of this season and the Sox scouts knew his best years were behind him.

Unfortunately Kenny under-estimated the fact that the rest of baseball didn't realize how mediocre Freddy now is and maybe could have gotten one more prospect. Still, Gio and Floyd are both very good arms. Hell, I'd make a case that Floyd is more talented than Hirsch (when his stuff is right, albeit that also has to do with Floyds mental well being and Floyd is just a bit younger).

Hirsh has the polish that Floyd lacks. I'd much rather have him than Gavin in our system.

Garland for that package would've been brutal. Sox fans think they hate Podsednik? Taveras is worse than Pods at his worse. Garland >> Hirsh.

Taveras plays defense and has a good arm though. Add to it he has youth on his side along with good, pure speed, along with a groin that is actually in good shape, and I'll take Taveras over Podsednik.

Chipper Jones is an amazing hitter and Freddy Garcia now knows this.

Just watching Chipper, it's amazing he's not talked about even more than he is because he's one of the most disciplined and pure hitters I've ever seen. I can't believe people think Joe Crede is anywhere near the player Chipper is, even at his age Larry is still far superior to Joe.

Walking injury machine and I believe he disappears as bad as Bonds in the postseason although I have nothing to substaniate this.

He's always injured yet he still puts up crazy numbers and more plate appearances each season than a certain 3B who's last name rhymes with greedy oh and another that rhymes with stolen. Maybe it's just the way of the modern thridbaseman.

His career .288/.411/.459/.870 postseason stat line seems pretty stout and he has had some great postseason moments but I guess when you play in 20 postseason series over the course of a career you're bound to have a bad one here or there unless of course you're Derek Jeter.

Barry Bonds also single-handedly carried his team to a World Series title in 2002. The problem, of course, was that Dusty Baker wasn't on the team but instead the coaching staff, and he gave the World Series away to the Angels.

Nothing really stands out though for me when it comes to him. I know he is always good but he seems to me to be just below great. Again I am not researching anything and it is just an opinion. Has he been an MVP or had a great postseason? I guess I would say he is just a really solid player in my mind.

He has 1 MVP, has been in the top 10 of MVP voting 5 times, has been voted onto 5 All-Start teams (more than Thome and as many as Frank Thomas and Bagwell) and had an outstanding postseason the year they won the World Series. The guy has a career .946 OPS which is the highest career number for any player who spent the predominate portion of his career at Thirdbase.

I guess you could ask any Mets fan how good Chipper is.

I don't know if it is true or not, but it adds an interesting twist to this deal...

http://daily.phanaticmag.com/2007/05/howar...e-lifeless.html

Freddy Garcia opened the campaign on the DL, hasn't pitched into the seventh inning in any of his five starts and still appears low on his prior velocity.

It's been discovered the Phillies didn't give Garcia a physical prior to trading Gio Gonzalez and Gavin Floyd for him at the Winter Meetings. If that's a blasphemous standard practice than the Phillies are just dumb.

The odds that Garcia could have passed a physical were very low, and I can say with 99.99 percent confidence that this isn't the first time a team traded for a veteran and didn't give him a physical. They thought it was such a fleecing that it was worth taking an injured past his prime starter in a contract year I guess. Garcia was worth more than we got for him, but not nearly as much as most people here think.

Why would anyone draft Freddy Garcia or pick him up? You must be in a 20 person league with expanded rosters or something.

Garcia was actually ranked higher than any White Sox pitcher in the pre-season. He's currently owned in 80%+ of cbssportsline leagues. I have EVERY Sox pitcher on my team and Garcia and Maine. I have the best pitching in my league. Didnt take a pitcher until the 12th round with Garland.

Extra innings

The Sox had early bunting practice for Rob Mackowiak, Pablo Ozuna, Tadahito Iguchi and Alex Cintron. …

Guillen disclosed that his home in southern Florida currently is being occupied by former Sox pitcher Freddy Garcia, whose Philadelphia Phillies are playing the Florida Marlins this week.

"We're going to kick Freddy's [rear]," Guillen said of the Sox's upcoming visit June 11-13 in Philadelphia. "Freddy's in my house right now eating my food. He never buys anything, but he's always eating my food. It's true. He never pays me nothing. Making $10 million and he never pays me nothing."

Haha

Fell to 1-4 with an ERA still in that 4 and a half to 5 range. Looks like we got exactly what we paid for in this trade, although he did have more value than that and will probably get a Marquis esque payday this offseason at minimum even if he bombs out.

yea i saw today hes now 1-4 with that loss. hopefully gavin floyd turns out to be good, or else this trade will suck for both teams

god bless sweaty freddy. he came to chicago and played a major role in winning the title, and thats what we got him for
