watchtower41
Like previous posts have said, Tubby is a great defensive coach.... but an average recruiter based on Kentucky standards (which there are few if any higher) He's had some studs throughout the years, but also passed on some great talent. The most recent case is where he let Mr. Kentucky Chris Lofton just leave to Tennessee in favor of Joe Crawford. Oops. Nevertheless, this would be a STEAL for Minnesota to grab a coach of his caliber.
Palehosefan
Hard to blame him for passing on Lofton for Crawford. Crawford was a top 20 recruit and has produced well at UK. Tubby's problem is his style of play. Recruits know he plays a slower style and that's why he can't attract better athletes. His style will fit the Big 10 perfectly and the Gophers are getting a very good X's and O's coach that is as classy as people come. That and Tubby is away from the racism :-)... RockRaines
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 03:04 PM) If Matta leaves tOSU for Kentucky, he's a complete idiot BTW. No reason to do that at all. He can get any player he wants at tOSU, their facilities and fan support are 2nd to none, and their fans aren't even nearly as crazy as UK ones. Thad isnt going anywhere, he gets more money and a 10 year contract at OSU.

watchtower41
Word out of Kentucky for replacement...... Crean. interesting also, Tubby looks like a done deal Lexington's WKYT-TV broke into programming at 3:10 p.m. Thursday afternoon to report Smith met with his team less than an hour before that and informed them he would be speaking with Minnesota. The station, which is the official television partner of UK, cited a source "uniquely close to the situation" as saying Smith told his players he was accepting the job. Officials at UK did not return phone calls this afternoon before news broke on Minneapolis television stations as well as WKYT. WKYT sports anchor Rob Bromley, the host of the Tubby Smith Show, reported on air that he spoke with Smith around 3 p.m. and Smith said he was "checking it out" when asked about the Minnesota position. Minny may be paying more?? Beline to Michigan..Huginns to WVU(his alma mater) the question is where does the SIU coach go, especially after beating my jayhawks tonight. You don't have to worry about CLo, he's going to stay with SIU. He said he wants Gonzaga money, which SIU will gladly dish out, in fact it will be a bargain. He has no reason to leave Carbondale as SIU is his alma mater and he realizes that he can build this into an elite program. He has the two best recruiting classes in the history of the school coming in and he is loyal to the players on the team. IT ISN'T ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY! CLo is staying, book it. Palehosefan
Donovan would probably flatly turn them down right now, mainly out of respect for all his guys choosing to come back this year. If they wait long enough for all of them to declare for the draft Donovan might bite on it. Edited March 22, 2007 by Palehosefan

His recruiting seems okay, nothing special -- I don't know if he's pulled in a top recruit yet, but he seems to do a good enough job. I don't think he's the greatest fit for KU, either. Even Minny paid out 2.5 mil for Tubby Smith, it would be no shock to see UK go higher. Of course, he would have to consider all things, and that would include plenty less job security. aboz56
Wow, a lot of you are totally out of touch when it comes to evaluating Tubby Smith. With my connections to the situation (which many of you whom I talk to know what I'm speaking of), I can say without reservations that Tubby Smith did an absolute poor job of recruiting at Kentucky. In fact, boosters have wanted him out for a long time now. He's swung and missed on recruiting for several years now. Lofton, while not highly regarded, wanted to come to Kentucky. He never even got attention from UK. His senior class that is graduating this year had absolutely nothing. His junior class has been a bust and he's really got no sophomores either. There was a ray of hope early this year with Jodie Meeks, Perry Stevenson and Derrick Jasper, but none of them were really immediate impact guys. He's consistently lost out on major recruits, which is not acceptable at Kentucky or any other major program. This year it was coming down to the wire with Jai Lucas and Patrick Patterson, neither of which I thought UK was going to land. Two of the best juniors in Kentucky, both top 50 players nationally, Scott Hopson and Bud Mackey, have already committed to Mississippi St and Indiana, respectively. The third junior from the state who is also a top 50 player, is heavily favoring Tennessee and Florida. You can't just let talent in your backyard get away like that. His style of play is the main reason nobody wants to play at UK. He likes to play in the 50's and 60's. Following a guy like Pitino, many UK fans want a return to those days. Tubby wasn't the man to give it to them. Remember, he won a title with a team that Pitino left in his lap. He's also a major jackass behind the scenes. So if all of those things are factors to be excited about, then it's a great hire for Minnesota. Bottom line is that the guy is not good at selling himself to recruits and if you can't sell a program like Kentucky, then how in the world do you expect this guy to sell kids on Minnesota. This was Tubby Smith leaving a situation where the heat was turned up to the point he couldn't take it anymore at a dream job for most coaches and taking the money elsewhere while he could still get it. He'll fit right in in Minnesota... we literally *never* get our top talent unless its in hockey. Brewster seems to be trying to put an end to that in football,b ut still. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Mar 22, 2007 -> 07:54 PM) then how in the world do you expect this guy to sell kids on Minnesota. Not saying that he will do a better job in Minnesota because of these reasons (since it doesn't compare to Kentucky's resume), but we do have the best court in the Big 10 (yea, screw you other teams!) and have a decent past to look at (8 Big Ten titles, same as Iowa). I mean, it's not like we're Duke here... but at least its not a Northwestern-like past.
