Splitting the Big East

Recommended Posts

So the Big East continues to get closer and closer to splitting into two divisions. This plan has gained some steam after Syracuse was left out of the tournament. Today Jimmy B went on a tirade on why the split should happen, and said it's holding back the conference in terms of basketball. He basically whined about being 10-6 but being left out because there is too much competition in the conference. First, I'd like to tell Jimmy to get a clue. You were left out because of your pathetic excuse of a non-conference schedule. Second, I'd like to take a look at what seems to be the inevitable split. The two divisions would likely be divided between the football schools and the non-football schools(including Notre Dame of course). It would look like this:

Football

Syracuse

Rutgers

West Virginia

Louisville

South Florida

Cincinatti

UConn

Pittsburgh

Basketball

Villanova

Providence

St. Johns

Marquette

Georgetown

Notre Dame

Seton Hall

DePaul

I think it's safe to say that it is a pretty even split basketball But I still would rather see it not happen. I would instead like to see modifications to the Big East conference schedule. I say screw playing random teams twice(and others not at all) and move to a everybody plays everybody once schedule. Would it be perfect? No. Playing at home against the bigger teams is obviously a huge advantage. But it stills makes more sense than what they have now.

I like the football-basketball idea

I hope Jim Boeheim gets hit by a bus

You can certainly make an argument for them, but Boeheim only has himself to blame for them not getting in.

They really weren't even considered a bubble team, and 30 of 31 "bracketologists" listed here had them in, which isn't the case at all for the other bubble teams. Must be a pretty good argument that can be made.

But I don't like cuse and hopefully this means everyone in the BE can start scheduling more quality non-conference schedules so that the BE can maintain a solid, top conference RPI. DePaul will be doing their part with another tough schedule with road trips at kansas and creighton already being confirmed. Now I'm hopnig for better results with that tough non-conference schedule starting off.

I was just curious how an East/West alignment would work out for the Big East.

East

Syracuse

Rutgers

Georgetown

Seton Hall

UConn

Providence

St. John's

Villanova

West

Louisville

Cincinnati

Pittsburgh

DePaul

Marquette

Notre Dame

West Virginia

South Florida

USF ends up being the wildcard, but they are far away from whoever they play no matter what. Technically they are far enough west to qualify anyway. DePaul/Marquette/ND are close together and the rest fall into place. The East is extremely close together. Other than Syracuse the East division would be all coastal cities ranging from DC to Providence, you can't beat that. I think a split would be a good idea, the random schedule isn't the way to go. It's funny, I started thinking about the geography of the Big East when my Northwestern dynasty in March Madness got bumped from the Big Ten and then later moved into the Big East.
