Soxbadger
What is the better job, KU or UK? Strange to see a Self guy get such a prominent job when Self hasnt wont a NC yet, which is the bottomline at UK.
Palehosefan
Could turn into a good hire, not proven enough for the job, but has been successful in his short times at UTEP and A&M. Definitely better than the Doherty hire UNC had to fall back to, *shivers. UK is definitely a better job than KU. KU is one of the top 5 jobs in college basketball, but Kentucky can pay more than any other program, and has what 7-8 championships, and Ashley Judd. AssHatSoxFan
the next logical step then for gillespie would be to start losing first round games to crappy teams then

Both Duke and UCLA are much better jobs than Kansas. Indiana probably is no longer up there either. And Gillepsie path was different. He turned around disturbingly bad programs whereas Self inherited a powerhouse at Illinois and, oddly enough, had the talented Mr. Gillepsie on his coaching staff. I like this hire, and tink that in the end, Gillepsie will be seen as the better coach.

whitesoxfan101
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 12:47 PM) Uh, you do realize Self inherited the most talented team in their history as a first year head coach. Weber inherited a more talented team than Self did, by far. Kruger doesn't get enough credit for cleaning up the Henson retiring/not hiring Collins mess, but Self's players made the program what it was until this year. As for Gillespie, he was obviously desperate for this job and probably doesn't care he is option C.
Gene Honda Civic
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) Weber inherited a more talented team than Self did, by far. Kruger doesn't get enough credit for cleaning up the Henson retiring/not hiring Collins mess, but Self's players made the program what it was until this year. The man who really doesn't get the credit is McClain. Illinois returned to being a top program in the big ten when they raided Peoria's 4-time(? maybe it was only 3) state championship team, where McClain's son just so happened to play. McClain could have, and would have, guided those players elsewhere if he didn't get what he wanted.

Buehrle>Wood
Uh, why does everyone keep brining up Weber? This was about a Self/Gillipsie comparison. Weber has nothing to do with that. Edited April 6, 2007 by Buehrle>Wood
aboz56
So UK hires a coach who got arrested for DUI's twice and is also a slimeball when it comes to recruiting. I guess good ol' Mitch Barnhardt had to go against his conservative ways and dig to the bottom of the barrel for this hire. You guys think Sampson is bad, Gillispie has gone on record to say he AVERAGES 8,000 text messages a month.
