Chicago Shamrocks - LaCrosse

Recommended Posts

A bunch of our neighbors and my family are going to the final game of the Chicago Shamrocks tonight. I guess this is professional LaCrosse? I've never gone to a game, never even watched LaCrosse. Anybody here a fan of this stuff? What can I expect? I was told to expect Hockey on grass, with just as many fights and just as much blood shed. Sounds good to me!

You can somewhat call it hockey on grass, though it takes more of a power play form and it has a shot clock. It's kind of like hockey and basketball combined, especially when it gets into the offensive zone and gets set up.

There usually isn't too much fighting nor as much hitting as there is in hockey. But it is entertaining, and you should see a ton of goals, and some unique ones at that.

The thing that surprises me about lacrosse is the amount of stick shots they allow. You can basically whack someone at will with your little basket stick.

It's an interesting game to watch once in a while, but I can't see myself really getting into it seriously.

Yeah i'm not a fan or anything, i've just seen it a few times. I can't get into it seriously either.

You are right - they allow wicked slashes up and down the field, it's kind of weird. Also, the goalies look freakin hilarious because their chest protectors are absolutely gigantic, even compared to a hockey goalie.

...there's a difference between indoor and outdoor??? How so? That seems rather silly. The Shamrocks are part of the NLL, whatever that is. Heck, I've been looking forward to seeing what the Sears Center is like, so this is pretty cool to me just for that. Sad that I am mostly interested in the place they play. Huh...just like 90% of the people at a Cubs game. :D

The Sears Centre is a great 'small' venue. I think you'll like it.

Indoor lacrosse can be pretty entertaining, but I'm much more of an "outdoor" guy. I've played both and indoor has a lot more scoring. But, I just like the outdoor game better.

Couple of clarifications:

NLL = National Lacrosse League - the indoor pro lacrosse league

MLL = Major League Lacrosse - the outdoor pro lacrosse league

Lacrosse does not have a capital "C" after the "La"

Indoor and outdoor are really completely different besides it being the same basic sport. Different rules, different goal sizes, padding, etc. Indoor lacrosse (or "Box" lacrosse) is huge in Canada, while Outdoor lacrosse is huge in the U.S.

Thanks for those little bits of info.

Just got home. Pretty good stuff, but it ain't no baseball. But yeah, pretty fun time. The Sears Center is really nice, aside from the seats being a little crammed together. Plenty of leg room, but the folks sitting next to you sit as close to you as at Wrigley. But the seats are comfy.

The game itself it pretty fast, and totally confusing of you don't understand it.

There is a buttload of fighting. It seems every few minutes somebody is heading into the penalty box. The goalie for Philly had to leave the game due to injury. His replacement was kind of bad.

All in all, we paid $5 a ticket, so really good time for so little money. We plan to go more often next year.

Going to bed last night after the game, they were showing some college lacrosse on TV. There is quite the difference. Is there a big difference in the balls used? The indoor goalies use those HUGE chest protectors and HUGE shin guards. But in the outdoor variety the goalies seem to use no form of protection.

Do the outdoor guys scoff at the indoor guys like they do in football?

The announcer for the Shamrox got a little annoying. He spent the whole time with fun little sayings and telling the audience to get up and all that junk. If he needs to talk the whole time, it would be cool if he would explain just what the heck is going on down there.

The dancers. Ugh. One of the many things I love about the baseball is the lack of cheerleaders.

The balls used are the same for indoor and outdoor. I'm not sure outdoor goalies necessarily "scoff" at the indoor goalies. The reason the indoor goalies wear so much padding is that the field is so tiny and there are much more shots on goal in indoor than outdoor. That being said, I used to play goalie and when I played indoor, I never wore that extra crap. I just wore a chest protector, gloves, and a helmet like the outdoor guys.

Lacrosse goalies are so tough. I can tell you that a ball hitting you in the shin at 80 MPH hurts like hell. lol... I can't imagine what it's like to get hit by a 95-100 MPH shot b/c that's what those pro guys tend to shoot it at.

And I've never heard of dancers/cheerleaders at any lacrosse game... That's terrible.

Yeah, they have about as many "extra" things going on as in basketball. Anytime a time out is called people run out to throw stuff into the stands, or somebody running around gets onto the "jumbo-tron" to speak to us. In between every period (quarter...inning...whatever they call it) the cheerleaders (dancers...whatever) come out and do a routine.

Thanks for the info about the shots. I'm pretty interested in this stuff now. It really was a very cool time. My wife is seriously hooked. She wants one of the jerseys. I told her maybe after we go to a few more games. Those things are $160! I haven't paid that much for any of my Sox stuff yet!

They're quarters.

Yeah, no prob. I'm more than happy to answer any questions, so if you go to games in the future and have a question, shoot me a PM or something, and I'll do my best to explain. :cheers

Thanks.

Oh, I would guess that the outdoor variety is gearing up soon? Where does the pro-team in Chicago play?

Yep. The Chicago Machine will start MLL play on May 19. They play at Toyota Park.

Actually, one of my coaches from my high school team will go up in early May to try out for the Machine. It's probably not likely that he'll make it as he's been out of organized lacrosse for 3 years now, but he's the best player I've ever seen in person, so I'm not counting him out yet.

The thing i like about indoor is that missed shots don't end up out of bounds...and well, there is no out of bounds, really, so it keeps the game moving. It's just more like hockey/basketball to me. Same with indoor soccer, i always preferred that to outdoor when i played.
