Sure there are other options and I would take advantage of eveyone of them. One can never be to safe. A responsible gun owner who has children will have their weapon in a secure spot that they know about, is easily accessible and maybe even in an area that only they will know. An alarm can be disable and is not the end all be all. As to living in crappy places and never getting broken into, consider yourself lucky. I sure hope you don't consider Lakeview or somethin shady. :P

Easily accessible and secure. I have yet to hear a spot that was secure from the children and accessible enough to have the weapon ready to fire in under a minute.

It depends on the neighborhood, but for most of the population, the odds are better that the kids will find the gun then someone will break into your home while you are there. It was an easy decision for me to put them away in a very secure location. I sleep better at night knowing my children, or their friends, would not accidentally discharge the weapon.

Really? I don't think the average burglar has espionage training to fully disable an alarm system. In my case I have a wireless powered alarm system. The central hub is located in an interior room of my condo with no window access. The system has battery backup. The battery gets tested weekly by Brinks (remotely) to make sure it is still ok. I would be truly amazed if a burglar would be able to disable this type of alarm system.

As a side note, we were provided 2 remote alarms (similar to car alarms that you put on your key ring). These remotes have panic buttons and when pressed will immediately notify the police of an intrusion. The alarm company won't even call to confirm if there is a problem...it goes straight to the police. The remote is kept on the nightstand next to my bed and is a lot quicker and safer than searching for a gun and keeping it away from children when not in use.

If we are talking about the fraction of a percent of burglars that are so sophisticated that they have a way to disable an alarm system, then...

1. They won't be breaking into just any place.

2. You won't be home when they do. So the only good your gun does in that scenario is giving the burglar one more prize.

I think everyone who has contributed to this thread can agree that no matter how sophisticated the security system. No matter how cool the keypad, remotes, sensors, monitoring is, it just isn't the penis extender a powerful hand gun is. :lolhitting

You don't know your house well enough then. Have you thought about what policemen do with their weapons when they are at home and off duty? It's your choice if you want to own a gun or not, nobody is required to in Illinois (but some places actually do require citizens to be gun owners).

Wow, do you actually know the percentage of burglers that have the know how to disarm a system? If you do, let me know, I would love to know aswell!

How much time will you have when someone breaks in your door and runs towards your bedroom? 30 seconds? 60 seconds? I don't know anyone who can wake up, gather his wits, grab a gun, load, unlock, and be ready in that amount of time. You need to be loaded with one on top. So I made the decision for myself and my family the risk of a home invader versus the risk of kids playing around and decided I'd keep everything in my safe and broken down.

The cops I know have gun safes and lock them up as well. In fact it was my friends in the Border Patrol that convinced me it was the smart thing to do.

It's a personal choice but in the worst case scenario, I couldn't live with having a child find one of my guns and hurt themselves or someone else.

Thieves generally don't charge towards the bedrooms.

No, and I didn't say I did. But it doesn't take much knowledge to realize that a burglar will go for the easiest target, and further, that your average burglar is not what you see in the movies. Do you really think that some uber-sophisticated super-burglar who knows how to defeat alarm systems is the person most likely to be breaking into your home? I've taken plenty of reports of burglary and theft from structure, and every one of them was simple - smash and grab, or an undefended target. Mysteriously defeating alarms and getting in and out clean without setting it off was not something I ever saw (fair information: I only spent a few years in law enforcement, so I certainly haven't seen it all).

Look, you want to have a gun for home defense, go ahead. But you are delusional if you think that gun is the best defense you have.

I don't think an alarm system would have helped too much in this situation:

"Opponents said it took Buford's - that the 15-year-old might be alive if a citizen had not been armed." Yeah, and the homeowner might be on the short end of the stick!

Sadly we could go one for one on these. I doubt this family would agree that a gun was good protection for the,

Child Killed in Accidental Shooting

A five-year-old boy who was shot by his 8-year-old brother Friday died several hours later at Carolinas Medical Center.

The accidental shooting happened just before 8 a.m. at the family's home on Linwood Road.

Investigators said the two boys and their mother were getting ready for school at Cramerton Christian Academy when the shooting happened.

The boys' father was out of town when he was notified about the shooting.

Police have not released any other information.

Surely if a burglar can decode a home security system he or she can handle a gun lock.

We're all screw. We'll just have to set proximity detonators at each window and door before we go to ed each night. :crying
