Rex Hudler
A couple of random thoughts/notes: 1. Alabama is having their spring game today (A-Day) and is expecting 60,000 fans. Yes, that is 60,000 for a spring football game! 2. Hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere, but Mitch Mustain is headed to USC. He left Arkansas after the season and is just now making his college choice. Here's one guy who hopes he gets buried in USC's depth chart and never sees the field as a starter. I just see him as one of the biggest spoiled brat athletes to come along in quite a while. Mods: Can we pin this thread? Just because it is April doesn't mean we can't have some ongoing dicussions about the gridiron. Thanks!
THEWOOD
Many schools are having their spring games today. I know OSU and Northwestern are both today. OSU should get 60,000 plus as well, especially since the weather is so nice.
Palehosefan
I tend to blame Houston Nutt more than Mustain. Nutt ridiculously hires Mitch's high school coach as an OC in the SEC just to get a recruit, and then wonders how it went wrong when the kids think they run the program. Rex Hudler
QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Apr 21, 2007 -> 11:49 AM) I tend to blame Houston Nutt more than Mustain. Nutt ridiculously hires Mitch's high school coach as an OC in the SEC just to get a recruit, and then wonders how it went wrong when the kids think they run the program. Dude, there is more going on there than that. Mustain's parents, went to the Arkansas AD to complain about their kids lack of playing time. Boo freakin hoo! Now Mustain has gotten the cell phone records from Nutt's university paid for phone under the Freedom of Information Act and is trying to smear Nutt accusing him for cheating on his wife based simply on the # of text messages sent to one person. Mustain committed to Arkansas before Gus Mahlzon was hired. He started to waiver and Mahlzon was hired and he re-committed. Even if promises were made to change the offense, the kid's got to compete to earn time on the field. If Mahlzon, Mustain, etc. were mad because they couldn't implement their spread gun offense 100% from Day 1 then shame on them. With the talent Arkansas already had, especially at running back, anybody with half a brain knew it would take time to make changes. I'm not saying Nutt is 100% free from blame, but if you truly expect things to be handed to you on a silver platter and then mommy has to go complaining when that doesn't happen, that just tells me he's a brat. His whole life people have been telling him how good he is and all of a sudden when he has to work and compete for something, he reacts this way. He better toughen up now because there is no way in hell Pete Carroll is going to hand him anything. Palehosefan
Still, if the only way you can get a recruit is to hire their high school coach in a major conference like the SEC, then you are just asking for trouble. Most top recruits have an ego out of the world because of all the attention and accolades they receive. But other coaches can get them on their team without giving up an OC spot to their high school coaches. If you have to sell your soul for a recruit, you are asking for trouble. Mustain isn't absolved from blame either, but he got his way as a spoiled brat and now it has been taken away so he picked up his toys and went home crying all the way. He better toughen up now because there is no way in hell Pete Carroll is going to hand him anything. And that's exactly what I'm saying, Carroll knows how to take charge over spoiled brats that come into his program each year, Nutt doesn't(didn't?). Maybe Nutt should resort to the good ole $$ to get recruits on campus like Carroll. Edited April 21, 2007 by Palehosefan

bkmoney
Alabama got over 90000 for their spring game. They had to turn people away after the stadium was filled...

thedoctor
illinois had its scrimmage saturday. about 10,000 showed, which isn't great but was better than last year. juice williams and rejus benn both were strong. williams was 14-of-23 for 301 yards and no interceptions. he had 42 rushing yards. benn had five catches for 145 yards and five rushes for 42 yards. on the downside, illinois's offensive line gave up six sacks and looked poor. But, any time you post in a collegiate thread regarding ISU it reminds me of the obnoxious girl at the party that constantly interjects in the conversations of others hoping they elect to dignify her with a response. You know I'm not calling you an obnoxious girl, A. But, it cracks me up. Hell, I still feel uncomfortable talking college hoops with accredited Indiana, Duke, or Kansas posters (save one Soxtalker) because in some way I still feel like Illinois is an inferior program--and we went to a Final Four three years ago. Your passion translates well and you are certainly the most informed Cyclone fan I have ever had the pleasure of conversing with--believe it or not, there was another! I know I'm giving you a hard time, but, there seems to be reason for optimism in the cases of both of our belov'ed collegiate football programs. And, although I can not speak to the Cyclones to the extent in which you do, I think both programs are about to turn the program...if only our head football coach had the football IQ that Chizik possesses (Illinois would be a perennial contender). Ya, but lets not act like Illinois is better than ISU in football (at least not over the past 5 years or so). I realize Iowa State isn't a great team (hell I'm actually sticking up for ISU and that says something) but they have to have a good number more wins than the Illini the past couple years. Personally speaking I want more people to tell me what the hell is going on with Iowa (any good new players coming) cause I need the dirt
danman31
Illinois' best defender doesn't have a first name, someone please give him one. 9/1/07- The slaughter of Illinois vs. Missouri in St. Louis. Capn12
South Carolina had right at 40,000 fans at this years Spring Game, and that was still only good enough to rank 3rd in the SEC in terms of Spring Game attendance. Think the SE has some semi-hardcore fans?
