Chicago White Sox Pitcher Mark Buehrle Named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week

Wed, 04/25/2007 - 11:30 — admin

04/23/2007 4:17 PM ET -- Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle has been named winner of the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending April 22nd. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect the company's long-standing tradition of recognizing achievements that inspire us all to seize opportunities to perform at our very best.

Buehrle pitched the 16th no-hitter in franchise history on Wednesday night in Chicago, facing the minimum 27 batters during a 6-0 victory over the Texas Rangers. The left-hander, striking out eight, allowed a walk to Sammy Sosa in the fifth inning but subsequently picked him off at first base. He is the first White Sox pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Wilson Alvarez did so on August 11, 1991 against Baltimore. Buehrle previously threw a complete-game one-hitter on August 3, 2001 versus Tampa Bay. In his three starts this season, Buehrle is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA, allowing seven hits and three walks over 17.0 innings pitched. This is the first weekly award of his career.

Other candidates considered were New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez (.370, 10 H, 1.000 SLG, 2 2B, 5 HR, 13 RBI), White Sox designated hitter Jim Thome (.455, 1.273 SLG, 3 HR, .741 OBP, 15 BB), Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner (.545, 12 H, .955 SLG, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Boston's Josh Beckett (2-0, 3.55 ERA, 12.2 IP, 12 SO).

In recognition of this honor, Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week Mark Buehrle with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece.

I wouldn't be shocked if NY radio was making the A-Rod argument

Maybe if anyone cared enough to even worry about it. A-Rod and Thome put up some sweet numbers that week. Mark with a one hitter probably would not have won. I'm just surprised it is his first weekly honor.

AROD: 27 AB, 5 HR, 13 RBI, .370/.393/1.000/1.393

Thome: 11 AB, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 15 BB, 1 SO, .455/.741/1.273/2.014 :o

Those two, look at Thome's walks, are a classic example of having someone protecting a hitter and making them pitch to you. I'm guessing A-Rod would have had a very similar week to Thome, less hits, waaay more walks, on the Sox.
