THIS DATE IN WHITE SOX HISTORY: APRIL 28TH

(For the entire day see www.WHITESOXALMANAC.COM)

SOX FIRE UP THE “BRONX ZOO”

1985:

The White Sox edged the Yankees 4-3 on Ozzie Guillen’s walkoff walk before 27,367 at Comiskey Park. The victory touched off a flurry of Yankee activity. After the game, Yogi Berra was replaced by Billy Martin as Yankee manager. New York pitching coach Clyde King delivered the news to Yogi, prompting an irate Berra to never set foot in Yankee Stadium as long as George Steinbrenner owns the team.

TED’S LAST HURRAH

1946:

Hall-of-Famer Ted Lyons won the final game of his illustrious career in the White Sox 4-3 win over the Browns in the first game of a doubleheader at Comiskey Park. The win was Lyons’ 260th – a White Sox record which still stands. The “Baylor Bear” went the distance in this and each of his five starts in 1946. Lyons also completed all 20 of his starts in his previous season of 1942.

SOX SCORE FIVE IN THE NINTH TO WIN IT

2004:

The White Sox scored five in the ninth to pull out a 9-8 win over the Indians before 12,189 at US Cellular Field. The four-run ninth inning deficit was the largest overcome by the Sox since July 29,1992 and their largest overcome at home since June 4, 1988. Sandy Alomar Jr.s’ sac fly scored Joe Crede with the game-winner after Timo Perez’s single scored Kelly Dransfeldt with the tying run. Edited by StatManDu
