32 HR - 96 RBI

But when the HR fails, we have nowhere to go. It's like we went to the golfcourse with six drivers, a 7 iron and two pitching wedges. At some point, you need to use every club in your bag. Right now, we are in the woods, trying to find the fairway.

We sell tickets based upon our 2005 season, goodbye season ticket base if this s*** keeps getting thrown out.

We've been a home run team a lot longer than from 2005. I wonder how many times since the Southside Hitmen that we fell out of the upper 25% in homeruns.

No doubt. Then we'll get excuses that we can't afford high payrolls and will need to start dropping large contracts. Hooray.

The big sell off is very close... if this team is more than 7 games out by July, which I dont see how we won't be... say goodbye to a lot of guys.

At least we had 2005!

As sad as this is, i would love a new batch of white sox players. It is quite obvious we are not going to get any upgrades or help this year. We cant even fire our god damn hitting coach, ,stupid front office.

We had one championship at least.

I would get rid of someone like Dye and Crede for a top lead off hitter.

They have little trade value at this time. They should have been dealt over the off season to get us anything of value in return.

How far do you think they dropped in trade value? 50%

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ May 3, 2007 -> 10:01 AM)
That sounds about right.

How would Dye have dropped in value by 50%? He has six home runs, and a very reasonable contract...the value of Dye is based on a team needing a RF or DH.

What other players are available that would be considered better than Dye?

Although I do wish we'd traded McCarthy for Soriano last July, that would give this team an entirely needed injection of speed and excitement.

Even though Buerhle is not the best pitcher in baseball, he will get at least $15 million next year in the FA market because he is the best available pitcher, just like Zito and Schmidt were this past offseason.

JD has gotten off to a very slow start first of all, which means he won't be putting up MVP type numbers to rival last year. He's hitting .209. So first of all, you're not trading a top 5 MVP candidate any more. Secondly, he's now dramatically closer to Free Agency in the minds of most GM's. You're no longer even getting the guy for a full season.

If he catches fire, he can still regain a lot of that trade value, but if he catches fire, that reduces the likelihood of the Sox delaing him.

What the hell are you talking about? We would have still missed the playoffs last year, bc the last thing we needed was another guy swinging for the fences, and then he would have walked... to the cubs no less.

The theory you propose is one that has this current team without the services of John Danks and Nick Massett on top of our pathetic crop... and they've been two bright spots.

That would have been cataclysmicly bad.

PS. Ichiro should be a Chicago White Sox when FA comes around... i think he's what this team needs, lol.

Last year, after one month, Dye had 6 homers and 20 RBI's.

This year, he has 6 homers and 15 RBI's in the same number of games.

What's the big difference, besides his batting average? Jermaine Dye is still Jermaine Dye, Gary Sheffield is still Gary Sheffield.

Last year, after one month, Dye had 6 homers and 20 RBI's.

This year, he has 6 homers and 15 RBI's in the same number of games.

Overall numbers:

AVG OBP SLG OPS

2006, April: .329 .430 .616 1.046. 14 strikeouts. 12 walks.

2007, April: .221 .315 .442 .757 20 strikeouts. 9 walks.

Soriano would be playing LF now, we could have used the $2.9 million from Pods' salary to sign Ponson or Ortiz for one year...and we would still have Floyd and Gio in the minors as insurance.

How is Soriano and Ortiz not better than Mackowiak/Ozuna/Sweeney and Danks?

KW wouldn't have dealt for Soriano unless he could have secured his services long-term, like he did with Garcia in 2004. With Garcia's salary out of the way, we would have been able to afford Soriano, and we wouldn't have been stupid enough to give him more than a 3 year deal, MAYBE 4.

LOL.

Yes, but he's producing and he's been much hotter recently. Teams know what Dye is capable of doing...and they're going to look at overall trends, especially the last couple of weeks. He has a track record over the last year and a half that's almost unmatched by any player. Even if he "regressed" to his career means or average, he's worth more than $7 million dollars for an entire season. In today's market, that's Mark DeRosa (pretty much a utility player) money. Dye is a huge bargain any way you look at it.

It's like saying a club would pay Scott Podsednik $8 million based on his first month of performance (before the injury).

$$. Assuming we'd have been able to sign Soriano for something reasonable, it'd still have been about $15 mil or so a year, even before the Cubs blew open the market.

Yes, and at mid-season, the market wasn't totally out of whack.

Soriano would have agreed to a more reasonable contract if it would get him to a contending team, and for fewer years, if he knew that the White Sox really wanted him and would keep him for AT LEAST 2-3 seasons (they could have given him a partial no-trade clause too to compensate for the dollars).

Currently, the White Sox are tied for the American League lead in home runs, with 32.

http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable_team_sta...p;sortByStat=HR

They are also currently second to last in the AL in runs scored, with 99 (and just one more than Seattle, who has 98).

So, first in HR's, next to last in R's. We can't get anyone on base!!!

Money over a need, AGAIN

The irony is that getting singles and doubles hitter is a much cheaper undertaking than the FA acquisition of power hitters and big RBI guys.

Soriano for McCarthy would have been a steal, looking back on it. The wisest thing probably would have been to then flip Soriano to another club for 2-3 younger pieces that we really need....with the model for this type of trade being Colon for Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips.

We could have acquired a young outfielder, SS or 2B to take over those positions in 2008 after being "bench" or role players in 2007 on an experienced team.

I would consider getting faster and more athletic throughout our line-up one of the single biggest needs this franchise has at the current time.

I don't buy this one bit. Diego Bentz, Soriano's agent at the time would never have let his client accept such a below market value contract coming up on his first year of free agency (with a lack of similar players in that market and such a huge premium being put on leadoff type hitters he was easily going to be the #1 player on the market). Soriano was looking at a huge payday considering his career year last season and I don't see why he would have given up 4-5 years and $60M-$75M to play for a "contending team" like the Sox for a few seasons when he could just sign with a pretty damn good team like the Angels for a s***load more money only a few months later.

And from all accounts Jim Bowden didn't just want McCarthy straight up for Soriano, he wanted another large piece (Fields) included as well. KW has actually hinted recently that if the deal had been McCarhty for Soriano straight up he probably would have pulled the trigger.
