Video Game Catch-All Thread

Last year my parents told me to pick out a new tv for my Christmas present. After a lot of research, I bought a 42' Samsung plasma, with the piano black finish. I read reviews, searched for the best prices, and ended up purchasing it from an online vender for about $1200 shipped to my house. At the time, Best Buy had it for about $1800 plus tax, so I felt like I got a pretty sweet deal. Sure enough, a few weeks later, Best Buy reduced their price to $1500, but I still saved several hundred dollars when you factor in the tax I saved.

Anyways, I've been extremely happy with the tv, including the previously mentioned "game mode." Gaming is a big concern with plasma tv's (or at least it was until recently), and I didn't think I would ever buy another console system again, but figured the game mode Samsung provided would protect me in case I did choose to get one. Well sure enough, I bought a PS3 for myself for Christmas this year, and all I can say is that I cannot be happier. Between the television, the console, the games, and the Blu-Ray player, everything has been perfect.

I would look at Samsung, Panasonic, Sharp and Sony for the best deals. The newest models are always rip offs, but if you go with the previous model, you can usually get a nice price. Check the internet also, because you can often find very good prices through running searches on Yahoo shopping and Pricemad.com. Obviously, check out the vendors before you buy anything, but many of them offer the stuff at prices Best Buy simply can't touch because of all their overhead and advertising costs.

I know this probably is asked all the time, but where's a good place to find a nintendo Wii? Or am I just better off waiting a while.

I took my brother to the Village Crossing Gamestop last Sunday. I went to buy Uncharted, and he wanted to get a preorder for the Wii. The Gamestop clerk said they werent selling preorders, but they would get a shipment of Wii's mid- to late-January

Super Mario Galaxy is ridiculously fun.

That is all

edit: that is not all. I found this nifty little wii site, www. wiisworld.com

I had no idea all of the characters that were going to be on Super Smash Brothers. I heard about Link, and possibly Snake, but Captain Olimar and his Pikmin? Thats awesome.

and I am totally psyched for Tales of Symphonia 2 for the Wii. I LOVE THAT RPG

As kyyle can also back me on, Playground on the Wii is also insanely fun. Word of warning though, tetherball is probably the most physically exhausting game on the Wii. My arm still hurts two days later.

I bought a pink DS right after Christmas. I wasn't able to find any other colors and didn't care to wait. Plus, the color of a game hardly defines ones sexuality...right? But anyways, I still have yet to see any in any stores. I'm REALLY glad I went ahead and bought my fruity little pink DS.

I dont think I have enjoyed paper airplane flying, track car racing, dodgeball, tetherball, wallyball and kicks this much since I was 6. And the game makes you want to be a kid

Super Smash Bros Melee is quite possibly the best game ever made. I can't wait for Brawl so much that I have to read the daily updates with all the new characters being put in on smashbros.com.

Hmmm. Yes, if you are ten, it is.

Haha.

Seriously.

But I'm not ten. It's an awesome game, one of the best ever made.

Seriously.

ALright. I can understand liking a game... but one of the best ever made? A fighting game starring nintendo celebrities?

It might be a fun party game, but "best ever made" really isn't fair to games that produce a great storyline, incredible graphics, great sound... you get what I'm saying.

I'll stop making fun of Super Smash Bros. now, obviously enough people like it that my judgement doesn't really matter. But one of the best games ever I shall not accept!

How about "One of the most popular Nintendo series ever made"?

Because I believe that to be very true

And earlier, I wasnt saying that i liked the Smash bros series, I was saying I like the Pikmin series. However, I will understand your assessment for either game ;)

Melee is one of the deepest games ever created. No one will argue that. Just because the orginal was simple fanfare of Nintendo celebrities does make that false. There's a reason it's the 2nd most popular competitive gaming game(Yes, people do do that), and that it's the only GCN game left in which reissues are still being ordered over 6 years after its release.

As for you 2nd part, does a game really need a great storyline or incredible graphics to be considered among the best games ever made? Then how come so many critically accaimled games don't have either then? Take Mario and Zelda for example, the two best reviewed series ever. Neither even bothers with a story. They have pretty good graphics(Sometimes great as was the case for Mario 64). But the reason they are so liked aren't for either of those, but rather for their flawless gameplay. I would say Melee certainly qualifies.

As for sound, I won't touch that. Brawl is already being heralded as having the best soundtrack ever. And who can argue? It simply takes the most memorable gaming songs, and has the original composer remix it into an orchestrated form. In the words from the Smash Dojo: "To have so many of these individuals providing music for a single work may very well be an historic event in the history of video-game music! It's almost unthinkable!"

Shouldn't the main goal and criteria of a GAME be to entertain? Within those rules, graphix and what not should matter very little. Pong can still be considered one of the greatest games ever, as well as Pac-Man.

Heck, Tic-Tac-Toe is still played on blank pieces of paper all around the world. ;)

Funny we should have this conversation today, actually. ESPN has announced plans to broadcast Major League Gaming, aka Smash Bros. Melee and Halo matches.

I am all for competitive gaming, but I found watching that Madden Nation show on ESPN to be boring and a complete waste of time. I dont know that the "MLG" appeals to me that much

Well, if World Series of Poker and Blackjack can exist, I guess why not gaming. It will all depend on the personalities who play though. On the last season of Madden Nation, once that Coach guy got replaced, I lost interest in the show. Most of those guys came across as nothing but gaming thugs and were so far from likable. If those are the kinds of people that will end up on a MLG series, forget it.

It's fascinating to see the cross over. Kudos to Toyota for seeing this chance to attact a large and developing demographic of MMORPG players.

It was pretty funny. Goes right along with the South Park Episode.
