Capn12
For those that like to only judge pitchers by Wins and Losses, first let me say SHAME on you!! Secondly, you are missing just how good this starting staff has been this year so far. Look at the WHIPs of all 5 starters. You'd expect Danks to be a bit high just because, but look at the rest. We have something special with this pitching staff this year.

Kyyle23
After Danks perfomance last night, is it 25 quality starts in a row out of this staff? Thats downright filthy right there. If this team can hit on all cylinders after the allstar break, it could be a fearsome sight for opposing teams.

Close to it, but I don't think Massett's start against the Cubs was a QS, I think he went less than 6 innings. Nonetheless, it was a good performance by him, and the staff is the only reason the Sox are still close to a playoff spot

The streak was for consecutive starts of 6+ innings, not "quality" starts. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggreg...amp;season=2007 As a staff, the White Sox have 26 quality starts in their first 42 games. They're fourth, with first (Angels) at 30, with Cleveland and Oakland at 28. Obviously, Cleveland, if they continue to get that kind of pitching, they're going to be hard to defeat. Our best bet might be taking down the Tigers. Edited May 23, 2007 by caulfield12
Dick Allen
QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 23, 2007 -> 08:51 AM) The streak was for consecutive starts of 6+ innings, not "quality" starts. They had quite a streak of quality starts. Anyhow, with the starters giving you that much, it really makes me concerned about a bullpen that really hasn't been asked to do too much. It does seem like Thornton is coming around, and Jenks, although adding some drama into several of his appearances is getting the job done. The others have been very inconsistent to down right awful. Controlled Chaos
QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 23, 2007 -> 09:08 AM) Danks is downright sexy. 1ER last night. The similarities between him and Buehrle are ridiculous. With the exception of last years second half, I have always felt very confident with Mark on the bump. It was going to be a solid performance and give the team a good chance to win the game. I feel that same way about Danks. Just give him the ball every 5 days and he's going to be consistent and give the team a chance to win. He won't have the sexy numbers every game, but you'll get that consistent start and that to me is as important as anything.

To me that is far more important than anything else. The innings that Buehrle eats and efficiency with which he does it is what makes him so valuable. He keeps the defense alert, the bullpen fresh, and during his starts the lineup backing up his performance is usually at the plate far more than the opposition. If Danks can replicate that mold and mix in an extra strikeout or two when he needs it...look out. It will be interesting to see his second half when the scouting reports on him get a little more precise

No offense to them, but I'm not worried. Even with the Sox offense scuffling (but much improved over the past week), I like their chances a lot more than I did last year. With solid starting pitching, you always have a chance.
RME JICO
For the Buehrle-Danks comparison, Danks numbers are very similar to Buehrle's career numbers. Also, Buehrle was an All-Star at 23, his second year starting. The way Danks is pitching this year, as long as he gets run support he will have a decent shot within the next few years to match that. I love the fact that we have two LHP starters. I really hope they find a way to keep Mark.

However, this is the same thing we heard about the Twins before '05, the same thing we heard about the Sox in 05, the same thing we heard about the Tigers last year. Last year it was "the Tigers pitching is too young, they won't hold up over the long run" and "Kenny Rogers will falter since he is not this type of pitcher", etc. Same thing this year, different line about the pitching. They don't have the overall talent and youth of Verlander and Bonderman, but Sabathia is an ace, Lee is their equivalent of Buehrle, Sowers=Danks and Westbrook=Garland, more or less. The wild cards are Carmona and Contreras.

Outside of Sabathia, the Indians don't have nearly as much talent in their rotation as the Tigers. Even before they broke out last season, Bonderman and Verlander were both projected to be studs. Throw in All-Star Kenny Rogers, and that's a much better staff talent-wise than Sabathia, Lee, and Byrd. And while Betancourt is good, Zumaya and Rodney are better than anything that Cleveland has in their 'pen. I'm not saying that the Indians don't have the talent to win, but pitching is what's going to determine whether they do or not. Detroit's staff lead the league in ERA last season. Cleveland's is currently ranked #7. That's why I'm not worried about them right now.

Cleveland's is currently ranked #7. That's why I'm not worried about them right now. There are a few other things. First is that the 2007 Indian Bullpen is nowhere near the 2006 Tigers Bullpen. I think that'll correct itself out in the coming months. Second, as was pointed out elsewhere somewhere, the Indians have a ridiculous Home/Road record split: (17-4) and (10-12). While the road split might improve, it's just ridiculous to expect them to win over 80% of their home games. Couple those two points with the hope that the Sox have had their "bad part" of the season out of the way and I think the Sox have a fair chance to overtake at least Cleveland in the standings. GoodAsGould
You cant compare Danks to Buehrle until Danks develops a cutter. What makes Buehrle so good is his cutter and his control. Danks is similar to Buehrle in that he is a left hander and he works fast thats about it.

What makes Buehrle so good is his cutter and his control. Danks is similar to Buehrle in that he is a left hander and he works fast thats about it. He's also similar in his approach and mound presence. He doesn't get rattled, he doesn't get emotional. He takes the ball and throws it. I never said he throws the exact same pitches as Mark, but just that I feel the same way when he takes the bump as I do when Mark does. I don't feel that with Javy, Count or even Jon.
