Heads22
When does one of the JAG trio get promoted to triple-A? I have to think Gio is first in line.
BearSox
If all three keep pitching like this, all three should be up. Phillips should/could be traded and Nunez is useless, put him in the pen or just release him. And then possibly trade Haeger/Floyd/Broadway to open up one more spot. There's nothing in Russells numbers that is begging for a callup. Gio is second in the minor leagues in strikeouts, and Eggy leads the SL in FIP (limiting walks + HR while striking guys out). They're both well ahead of Russel in terms of results. Russell needs his numbers to catch up to his scouting reports before I'll consider him anything more than a possible big league set-up man. Which do you think will perform better, if, say, they both are in Charlotte's rotation for the last half of the season. You'd think Egbert's lack of the gopher ball would work well for him, but I also think that Gio's a better pitcher. Either way, Gio has nothing to prove in AA. Egbert's close to that point as well. BTW, Egbert has allowed two HR in his last 221.2 IP. Seven homeruns his last 368.2 IP. NO home runs in over 133 innings. That is f***ing silly. I'd guess that Eggy succeeds quicker, or doesn't have much of a learning curve, but Gio will eventually dominate in AAA. It just might take another year. I'm still unsure about Eggy's strikeout rate. We'll have a much better idea what we have with him when we see what he does at a higher level of competition. They both should be at AAA as soon as possible. Gio because he's got nothing left to prove there. And Eggy because I want to see how that sinker holds up at the higher levels and in a smaller park, which I suppose is the same thing I just said about Gio. Heads22
And apparently BA said he has the best changeup in the system (EDIT, in the 2006 version at least; 07 has KMac) which I must have missed somewhere in my stalking of the guy. I still think Gio has a better chance at major league success, FWIW.

It's amazing he was a really good prospect just two years ago. I expect Gio to get promoted very soon, especially since he is repeating the league. DBAHO
Nice to see Eggy pitching well again, and some power from Sweeney, which is what he needs to show for the remainder of the season.

I still think Gio has a better chance at major league success, FWIW. Yeah, I would agree with you there. Gio has the best stuff in the system and some of the best in the minors. His curve has been called a "video game curve" and it is just plane sick. Just watch some of his pre-draft video on mlb.com and you'll see one in the middle that is not even fair. And add two solid pitches, his low- to-mid 90's fastball and change up, to a prolly 60-70 curve ball (scout rating that is) and you have something. I just really worry about his size, only 5-10 ish and pretty thin. He would be a dynamic set-up man, but I just hope we never have to see that and he can stay as a starter. With him and Danks as two lefties, we certainly are in an enviable position.
BearSox
Gio, Russell, Egbert, Broadway, McCulloch, De Los Santos, Honel(?)... we have some stacked pitching prospects. If just 2-3 of them can pan out, we should be in good shape.

And "being in good shape" isn't exactly an accurate description when with Slowey, Garza, Baker, Perkins, Liriano, Andrew Miller, Adam Miller, Lofgren, De La Cruz, and Hochevar, what we have is merely keeping up with the Jones'. How come Honel can't still be considered a prospect? Yes, he has had injury's derail him, but if he can truley stay healthy and be able to throw in the 93-5 with that knucklecurve he has, why the hell not? Gene Honda Civic
I highly doubt Honel's topping 88, let alone sitting in the mid 90's.
danman31
Yeah, Honel is probably done, but it shows how good his stuff is/was if he can still be a competent AA pitcher throwing mid/high 80s.
GoodAsGould
well after his first or 2nd start his velocity was in the 80's, really hasnt been an update by anyone since than if its gone up or not. You would expect him to struggle some this year though considering the injuries. Next year he either dominates or he is officially done in my book.
BearSox
Well, Honel has barely pitching in the past two years or so... It will take at least a year to for him to get back up to around 90.
