BearSox
So, Owens in CF is not a good idea, IMO. Owens in LF and Terrero in CF?
Greg The Bull Luzinski
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:51 PM) Wrong. We're still going to be slow as all hell. It's not like he's going to be put into the 3-7 that clogs the bases. That's why i qualified my statement with the word "could". Take a moment to scroll back and look. I'll wait .... See. Owens is quick. I never said he would actually reach base.
spiderman
QUOTE(SoxAce @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:40 PM) IMO, I would just let Sweeney finish out the year. I would LOVe BA, but I doubt that's going to happen but hopefully I'm wrong. If not, give Sweeney the chance even though he isn't ready. I think he's in the doghouse. I think Sweeney and Owens are both ahead of him right now. QUOTE(BearSox @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:52 PM) So, Owens in CF is not a good idea, IMO. Owens in LF and Terrero in CF? It's going to be Mackowiak (LF), Terrero (LF/CF), and whoever they bring up splitting some time out there as well in LF/CF. All three of those guys will see action as we have backups starting in LF/CF. Yep, we can compete with Cleveland/Detroit!
quickman
that should do it. pretty much over from here. Now start lining up the best trades.

I think I stated it earlier, but the best move would be to call up Owens, send down Gonzalez, and then call up either Sweeney or BA.

dagotony06
I know alot of people want to see BA, but in reality, I don't think we are ever gonna see BA again on the big league club. It's pretty obvious they are done with him.
claydude14
And here I thought things were about to turn around after the Cubs series. Our lucky breaks are dissapearing.
Balta1701
Well, who didn't see this coming? Anyway, welcome to the big league club Jerry. Hit .300. Please. And for God's sake Ozzie don't put him in CF. Or Mack. Or hell, anyone on this 25 man roster except Terrero. Seriously, Gonzalez needs to go down and a CF needs to come up.
Kalapse
I'm shocked it took him this long. Kenny Williams has had a terrible couple months and one of the worst offseasons a Sox GM has ever had.
Balta1701
QUOTE(ROC Sox Fan @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:32 PM) And here I thought things were about to turn around after the Cubs series. Our lucky breaks are dissapearing. We were a much younger, and therefore much healthier team back in 2005. Some of this isn't luck, some of it is playing the odds. We've added guys like Erstad and Thome, and the rest of our lineup is 2 years older. The injuries are bound to start piling up. Which is why, occasionally, you need to develop a position player or two.
Kalapse
QUOTE(BearSox @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:30 PM) As much you don't want someone to get injured, it is kinda good now that Erstad will hopefully not get his 600 AB's this year, resulting in a 6 million dollar payday for him, most likely. 600 PLATE APPEARANCES there's a huge difference. SoxAce
QUOTE(Kalapse @ May 31, 2007 -> 09:36 PM) I'm shocked it took him this long. QUOTE(SoxAce @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:31 PM) Hell, I'm surprised he lasted this long. Great minds think alike.
Balta1701
Seriously though...aside from the sub-.700 OPS, this is the other reason why Erstad, no matter how grindy, is not an everyday player at this stage in his career. He's an excellent backup, maybe even a platoon OF player, but there's no reason why he should be your everyday player. He should be sitting at least 1/3 days, and now this is the result. Whitewashed in '05
QUOTE(fathom @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:51 PM) Worst outfield, and the worst double play combo up the middle. How does a 100 million dollar payroll team have so many holes? That's a good question fathom... a good question.
RockRaines
IM sad Erstad went down, but happy to see Jerry get a shot at the bg leagues. He was playing very well down there and deserved a chance to be PODS (healthy) #2. Its pretty obvious its going to take something drastic to jump start this team into any sort of decent season, and maybe a young speedster with some energy is just the thing. Where do you get this stuff? Where is this supposedly 6 million dollar option you are talking about. Show me proof of it please. There is no such thing. Yeah, you're right - Anderson is the answer. To Erstad there really is no difference between an at-bat and plate appearance. His walk rate has always been below average. southsideirish
QUOTE(spiderman @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Anderson should be brought up and be given another chance. Just a year ago, he was our future CF. True, he struggled, but if we're not going to hit, we need to have defense on the field. He did hit well in the minors, and we'll see how far he's in the doghouse as he plays CF better than anyone else who could be brought up. He can't hit, has an attitude problem, and is a complete moron. Besides that - yeah you're right he needs another chance - just not on my favorite team. RockRaines
QUOTE(quickman @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:36 PM) Even if owens comes up I doubt Ozzie would put him leading off the guy has never hit major league pitching and he is still learning to steal bases. I speculate that maybe Iguchi will lead off, but what do I know. Nothign really except we have no minors worth a damn. Yeah, but he has really learned to walk this season. Our minors are pretty good dude, you've been ignoring them obviously this year. We have some good arms down there.

caulfield12
QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ May 31, 2007 -> 10:00 PM) That's a good question fathom... a good question. The same way the Yankees are in last place and haven't won since 2000, the Angels under Moreno haven't gotten back to the World Series despite a much higher payroll and liberal spending, the Dodgers, Cubs, Mariners, Giants, Red Sox (05-06, they have a good shot this year) and many other teams haven't had results by spending money. Generally, the top quartile teams are the ones that make the playoffs year in and year out, with the exceptions of the Marlins, A's and Twins. So unless you're one of those three teams, you need to spend at least $80-85 million to be competitive.
