whitesoxfan101
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines This Mark Gonzales article is a fireable offense, yearning for the irreplacable .675 OPS and .318 OBP of grinderstad, and it also had this gem I'm sure some here will jump all over. X-rays revealed no break, but Erstad will be re-examined Friday. If the injury is determined to be more severe, the Sox might consider looking to acquire a veteran center fielder, such as Aaron Rowand from Philadelphia. Why would we trade for Rowand? This team needs a major, long term overall for the future....not Rowand. I'm tired of grinders, I want good players.

klaus kinski
Rowand could actually have a positive effect on Crede-they were close. Its a move that could be a benefit-we do have bullpen pitchers to send them that we could replace.

GreatScott82
With Erstad going down, the time is now to bring up both Sweeney and Owens. And when we are 14 games out of it come the ASB trade Dye and Crede for top of the line prospects and then bring up Anderson and Fields. If were going to be out of the race for the whole 2nd half of the season, i would much rather watch a young outfield of Anderson RF, Owens CF, and Sweeney LF. And Fields play 3B the rest of the year. Chances are ALL 3 won't succeed at the big league level (my guess would be Anderson) So if thats the case going into 2008, then you bring back Rowand via free agency and have and outfield of Sweeney, Rowand and Owens. One other trade KW should make this season should be to trade Contreras and open up a spot for Gio Gonzales or to plug Massett into the starting rotation. Why trade Contreras instead of Buerhle? Well i would still re-sign Buerhle even if we do go younger. This should be KW's goal for 2007- Get as many top prospects as you can for Dye, Crede and Contreras. Let the kids (Fields, Sweeney, Owens and Anderson develop) 2007 offseason- 1) Re-sign Buerhle to a 4 year 54$ million dollar contract. 2)Sign Aaron Rowand to a 2 year 11$ million dollar contract 3) Sign Luis Castillo to play 2B and to replace Gooch as he walks via free agency 4) Sign 2 'Reliable' veteran relievers for the pen. 5) Let Masset and Gio battle it out for the final spot in the rotation. Your younger and hungrier Chicago White Sox Owens RF Castillo 2B Thome DH Konerko 1B Pierzynski C Fields 3B Rowand CF Uribe SS Sweeney LF Rotation: Buerhle, Garland, Vazquez, Danks, Massett or Gio Pen: Jenks (CL), Thorton, MacDougle, (3 free agent veterans) Okay i got bored sorry! WHITESOXRANDY
I agree with most of that. I'd be happy to sign Rowand and I think he'd give the Sox a break on the price. I wouldn't trade for him. That makes no sense. I still think if that happened they would need another really good young outfielder for next year along with Rowand and Sweeney. Not Owens, Anderson or Fields - I mean really good. Rios, Baldelli, Bay, Crawford, etc. I don't understand the Sox philosophy. Shouldn't they be getting big time offense from the outfield ? C'mon ! To me it's easiest to get your best hitters / offensive players in these positions in this order: DH- Thome (solid) FIRST BASE- Konerko (good/keep him) OUTFIELD- ideally there would be 3 serious offensive threats here. Last year the Sox had one and this year have none. If they really want to use Sweeney then they must come up with 2 big run producers here. Rowand doesn't really qualify but when you add in his intangibles to this team he's acceptable only with another big bat. SECOND BASE- not a really demanding physical position. I'd rather have a big time offensive player here that doesn't have to be a gold glover. THIRD BASE- defense is important here but if the rest of the infield is solid then you can live with a huge bat and fair glove. SHORTSTOP- yes it's a defensive position but there are enough good offensive SS's around that can handle the glove adequately that there is no need to settle for a .250 OBP. CATCHER- defense is clearly number one since it affects the pitching staff so much. BOTTOM LINE: GET SOME HITTERS IN OUR OUTFIELD !

Rowand is not worth $5.5M a year, mediocre players such as himself should not be rewarded with such lucrative deals. 2.) Sign 2 reliable relievers? There's what? Like 5 truly reliable relievers currently in baseball? Middle Relief is the biggest crapshoot in all of sports. There's really no such thing as a consistently reliable middle reliever. 3.) An outfield of Owens, Rowand and Sweeney is probably the least potent in all of baseball. A team with a $100M+ payroll should never have such a terrible collection of outfielders. 29thandPoplar
Kalapse the one thing I really like about your comments is the use of young and hungry. It appears the Cleveland Indians are just that, and the White Sox are not. I see a guy like Thome being hungry and also believe he is too much a pro to not be. Several of the others I have my doubts. How hungry were the Indians last year? They were even younger then. A lack of talent, not desire, is holding the Sox back. They punted on 3 spots in the lineup which meansthe count on excellent performances elsewhere. Some guys have sucked because of injury (Crede, Iguchi). Others have just been bad (Konerko, Dye). The Sox simply don't have the offensive depth in the lineup to handle key players not playing well.
