WHITESOXRANDY
Someone please help me understand this situation. Wouldn't the Sox either sign him before the deadline or trade him ? Why would they keep him the whole season ? Wouldn't their chances of signing him then be tiny ? And, if they did wouldn't it cost them much more after other teams drive up the bidding than it would now ? I would think that since KW declared that no contracts would be negotiated until after the season that the Sox would be foolish not to trade him in July. As well as he's pitching, they should be able to get a good haul for him from a contender versus nothing almost assuredly. Personally, I wish they would re-sign him now. Is that even a possibility ? AirScott
Recent history is on our side. Konerko's deal expired after 2005 but we re-signed him. From all indications, he won't be re-signed until after the season, if he even is. Obviously if he's going to be leaving you want to get something for him, but it doesn't always work out that way. And other circumstances come into play come the trading deadline (likeliness Buehrle will re-sign, how hard are we contending, what are the offers, etc.). dagotony06
I guess signing him is possible, but highly unlikely. I would love if they did, but I'm not sure if that is an option anymore. I just don't know how much we could get in return for him from teams knowing he is a FA after the season. I just don't have much confidence in KW trading away players and getting value for them. I know the Mcarthy trade looks to be a good one so far, but KW just reminds me a Jerry Krause in alot of ways. He likes to think he is smarter than everyone else, and I just don't have confidence in him, especially if we are going into fire sale mode. Unless the team gets younger but also signs some veterans to get a nice mixed blend. Like if the Sox go out and sign Castillo and Rowand to go along w/ Fields, Sweeney and Owens, that would be a pretty good looking team. WHITESOXRANDY
The Sox HAVE to trade him. No one can tell me that a guy with his veteran and World Series track record that's just thrown a 2-hitter yesterday after a NO HITTER last month won't be a hot commodity come the trade deadline. The Sox will NEED whatever he can bring them. Even if the Sox trade him, they can still sign him at then end of the season.

What they need is consistent, versitile hitters to surround durable pitchers. Not guys hat sprain their ankle swinging at a pitch. They need to lock up Garland and Buerhle for a long time to come and stop giving hitters big money.
fathom
Here's my thinking: with the Sox likely replacing Crede with Josh Fields this offseason, that should really clear up a lot of payroll. If the Sox don't bring back Buehrle, they better be in the hunt for guys like Ichiro.

Kalapse
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) Here's my thinking: with the Sox likely replacing Crede with Josh Fields this offseason, that should really clear up a lot of payroll. If the Sox don't bring back Buehrle, they better be in the hunt for guys like Ichiro. Ichiro is going to make an insane amount of money this offseason and he deserves every penny. As of May 6th Ichiro had a season line of .260/.330/.385/.715 just terrible especially for his standards. He's had atleast 1 hit in the 24 games since then including 15 multi-hit games, a couple of 3 hit games and a 5 hit game. His line over that span? .411/.447/.505/.952. He's 44 for his last 107 and has raised his season line to .336/.389/.445/.834. I want Ichiro Suzuki more than any other free agent since Griffey. History has also shown that JR doesn't like to give five-year deals to veteran pitchers, which is the lower end of what Mark could command on the FA market. Given that Zito got 7 years/$126 million this past winter, Mark could easily command 6 years/$90 million. I don't like our chances.
