Slowey's first start for Twins

Has looked very good, although it's one of those cold, brisk (57 degrees plus wind chill) nights at the Coliseum.

Fastball 86-90, not overwhelming by any stretch, but very calm/poised and in command for a 23 year old (Winthrop). He pitched most of last season for Ft. Wayne in the FSL and then pitched the last six weeks in AA, with good success. He's thrown a shutout through five innings, but has had to use 88 pitches in the process.

Has a slider or cutter that he throws around 78-80 MPH.

I find it interesting that the Twins promoted Baker and Slowey over Garza, but Garza and Baker are very similar pitchers, so that might have been part of their thinking.

Terry Ryan said that Slowey did not have enough AAA innings under his belt (first year there), and Baker was pitching pretty darned good this year in Roch. Garza, its said, need to work on his off speed pitches and that is why he is in AAA.

Slowey's pitch count was high tonight because Oakland has hit something like 25 foul balls

Garza has been backlisted for criticizing the Twins organziation for making him change his style of pitching. Just call him Brian Anderson.

It's kind of interesting. I guess he needs to work on the consistency of his breaking stuff, and he feels that he has the "stuff" to not be stuck behind Slowey, Baker and Perkins in the Twins' pecking order.

Slowey looks like another version of a former Twins pitcher Brad Radke. He has a 50/5 K/BB ratio and a 1.76 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A, spanning 56 innings. Batters are hitting just .195 off him. He has had top-of-the-charts control ever since college. A guy that has good stuff and can locate it anywhere he wants at any time will succeed.

Garza has a little more notoriety after pitching so lights-out in the minors last year that he got a late-season callup.

This season he has a 46/18 K/BB in 49 innings with a 3.49 ERA. He had one bumpy start, but otherwise has shown more consistent command, which was his problem in his major league stint in 2006. He's keeping the ball down in the zone a lot better.

They're coming, it's just a question of when, even if trying to predict exactly "when" occurs is sometimes difficult with the Twins
