Andy Katz: Donovan wants to go back to Florida

I would like to see what DBAH0 has to think about this?

Well Andrew.. :D

If it's true, well, I don't know what to say.

The contract must have been signed already, so he'd have to resign I presume in such a case.

Pretty poor on his part though.

And if Donovan does go, who's going to coach us? The next candidate, Marc Iavaroni's already gone to Memphis. Otis Smith better have Stan Van Gundy on speed dial.

Apparently he feels he made a "rash" decision, because the Magic gave him 24 hourd to decide after offering him the contract, in a take it or leave it kind of way.

And I don't blame the Magic with that type of window, if Donovan refused in the 1st place, which he SHOULD have done if he wasn't 100% confident he wanted the Magic job, then the Magic can move on quickly and get another head coach.

Now they've missed out on a couple if Donovan does leave, and our next main target Van Gundy could decide to just go to Sacramento, because the Magic snubbed him for another head coach.

Really it's a messy situation, and it makes both parties look like complete jokes.

So lame on Billy D's part.

What would have happened if Florida hired a coach before this?

Billy would have been SOL. Apparently, they may have only been hours from doing so.

I also think this is pretty lame. He basically has a case of buyer's remorse. At some point these coaches need to put the brakes on rushing into these decisions OR stick with it. Basically what is happening is the process gets rushed so much so the decision is made before the media swell hits.

Supposedly, the NBA might ban him from going to the NBA for 5 years...

So what? He probably wouldn't do it now anyway. Going to the Magic would have been the easiest place to go...no pressure like the Heat, not rebuilding like the Hawks and near Gainesville, so he could keep his family close.

I think the Magic should let him out of the deal and the Gators shouldn't take him back...but that's just me. I'm sure he's sorry and feels horrible, but, he's hurt the Magic, he's hurt the Gators, he's hurt Anthony Grant of VCU, he's hurt the players that thought they were going to play for him...I don't care if a team gives you a 24 hour window or not...this is a big decision and if a team is going to force you to make that decision to pick up and leave a good job, move your family, etc., then I would tell them, either 1) if you want me that bad, give me a couple more days to discuss and think about it or 2) get bent because it isn't fair to me.

Donovan lost a little shine on that hair of his with this move.

Little Billy is nothing but a whiney ass little boy..........Nobody put the gun to his head to leave and I would tell any recruit thinking about FLA as a rival coach, how long till the next time he decides to blow out!

To me, that's a fair move.

It's fair for the NBA, but I can't imagine, after this debacle, that he would go back to the NBA. He's kinda setting himself up to build a REAL program at Florida. You know, compete with Kentucky every year for the SEC crown. I think they need to hit him in the wallet if they can.

For them to be able to do that, they have to prove real financial damages to the team. There were a bunch of season tickets sold on Friday after the announcement, so they may well have grounds for a case, but it would certainly be a difficult one to make given that no money changed hands and they didn't launch a full ad campaign.

He's not getting "banned" and the NBA has nothing to do with it. The Magic are including a simple non-compete clause in the buyout agreement to protect their own interests. Think how they would feel if he has another change of heart after next season and lands as the Head Coach of the Miami Heat?

Non-compete clauses are pretty standard fare in certain business situations.
