Harry Chappas
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 6, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) 1.) Why would they trade Michael Young just a few months after giving him a huge extension? 2.) Are you sure you want to deal for a 2B (yes he's a 2B) who's due $5M next year and then $16M per year for the next 5 seasons after that? He's also lighting the world on fire with his .269/.318/.408/.726 line. No thanks. 3.) Considering how things went the first time around I highly doubt Lofton will ever play for the Sox again. 2 answers 1. I didn't think he was making $16M though. As far as Loften goes he is a stopgap for a team that is 3 games out of the WC and possible spark. I didn't think he ended with bad blood last time. SoxFan1
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 6, 2007 -> 03:26 PM) Aramis Ramirez strained his left knee and left the Cubs' game against the Brewers in the middle of the second inning Wednesday. With the Cubs ahead 4-0, Ramirez grounded to shortstop J.J. Hardy and reached on an error. After Jacque Jones' inning-ending grounder, Ramirez walked gingerly off the field, accompanied by a trainer. Mark DeRosa moved from second to third, Ryan Theriot went from shortstop to second and Cesar Izturis entered at shortstop. How brainwashed am I? I initially read that as "grinderly". Kalapse
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 6, 2007 -> 03:27 PM) I agree that Young wouldn't come here because of the extension, but this is by FAR the worst year of his career. He's had 6 straight 200 hit seasons (IIRC... someone might want to double check me but I know it's a string of them) and I sure as hell would put my money down on a guy like that then the rest of the choke artists we have on the Sox right now. Michael Young is a damn good ballplayer, this year's stats notwithstanding. OPS+ of 74, 98, 106, 133, 106 since becoming a full time starter. That's a whole lot of time being spent around the slightly above average mark for a guy who's going to be making $16M a year 2 seasons from now and is locked up through 2013. Not to mention the fact that his career Home/Away splits are staggering. I understand that he's struggling this year and his numbers will likely even out as the year goes on and by the end of the season he'll have an OPS in the .800-.820 range but trading for a guy who has a monster contract and is struggling to get on base much like the rest of this lineup is not a good idea at this point in time. quickman
wow, you guys must really think fields is going to be great, with all this excitement around here You would think we just got chavez to take crede's place. Crede is an allstar caliber 3b who is a clutch hitter. Fields is nowhere near crede, I am surprised that people would be excited to see our runner up gold glove 3rd baseman go down. Why don't we just call up all our farm boys, everyone here loves those guys better than the pro guys anyway. All these guys come up and have a good game or two and then the scouts file their reports and they can't hit or pitch worth a damn. Everytime we call these guys up we are at risk of not getting value when we trade them because teams know they are either not ready or they never will be ready. greg775
I hope he is ready because as has been discussed so much, Crede's back problem isn't going away this season. Poor guy may need that scary surgery in offseason. You'd think it'd affect his future earnings. His back problem is gonna kill his hope for a big money deal. Gregory Pratt
Crede's not all-star caliber. Not even healthy. The reason some people are so excited about Fields is they're tired of Crede popping up softly to the right side. One person told me so explicitly, and I know that others agree. Joe's a great defender but he's only had one good year at the plate and even then I wouldn't call him allstar caliber. I'd bet that the reason many are happy to see Fields is most around here just don't think this team stands a chance at making the playoffs. If the majority of people thought this was a playoff team then I'm sure there would be a whole different reaction to this news, I know there certainly would be from my point of view. I wish Crede were healthy and I'm skeptical about Fields having success at the major league level this year. The only thing I'm looking forward to is to see if he can run as well as his SB numbers seem to indicate. Having decent speed in the order would be a welcome change, if he can get on base and maybe smack a home run or drive the ball in a gap now and then. Not sure the logic I was never calling for Fields like a lot of others were. In fact, I laugh(ed) at all the people that believe Fields is going to make our offense that much better. I'm saying, you're giving him way too much credit for his offensive abilities. He's a great defensive 3rd baseman, and he is clutch when he is healthy, but he hurts our team overall much more when he is hurt than he helps. kwolf68
I hope Fields is ready, but after the Sweeney, Owens, Buckvich, Day, Wiki, Gonzo experiements I wouldn't be shocked to be counting the days before Crede is healthy and back in the lineup. For the record, Fields is a great kid. Met him at Richmond last year when the Knights played there...very humble, friendly, very polite...I have nothing but admiration for the guy and hope he works out. But i do believe he is one of the premier 3baseman in baseball and if not hurt he would be recognized for that. as for Fields, i hope he does well because he is all we have down there. if he does what the great Brian "surfer dude" andersen did then we completely blow. fathom
I'll be disapointed if Fields doesn't turn into a better overall hitter than Crede within 4 years. For as clutch as Crede was at the end of the season in 2005 and the beginning of 2006, he sure did seem to fail a lot in clutch situations the last 100 games or so of his Sox career. Yep, you could see last year how upright and mechancial Crede's swing got as his back got worse. It's painful for not only him, but for us to watch him hit now. The Sox really should have traded him the second he refused to get the surgery.
