danman31
QUOTE(Jimbo @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 12:56 PM) the white sox drafted like 5 black players, have they ever in their life drafted a black player outside of malone. Chris Carter, Gartrell (in Kanny now, went to USF with Poreda), to name a couple off the top of my head. To continue the hopefully still innocent racism: I was more surprised to see a black pitcher (Griffith). To answer the above questions about the draft...the guys taken in this range are either extremely easy signs (college guys) or talented guys that are expected to go to college. For example, Chris Carpenter of Kent St. was a top 2 round talent, but just got taken by the Yankees in the 18th round. This is because he was a draft eligible sophomore, he will almost undoubtedly go back to school. Buehrle was a signability pick that became a draft and follow. He wouldn't have been picked so late otherwise. Oh Lasorda doing the conference call for the Dodgers, good times. Also, Alex D'Alessio, stud 1B for Clemson, just hit a HR about 10 minutes before getting drafted by the Giants in the 19th round. That HR got him drafted haha. danman31
Sox just took Logan Johnson, 2B from Louisville. He crowds the plate like none other, got hit his first 3 plate appearances in the regional opener against Miami. The crowd had some fun with him as his back foot was definitely over the line, it was pretty funny actually. He didn't seem that great though. Reddy
QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 12:38 PM) I think Buerhle was a 38th rounder. Roy Oswalt was picked in the 18th round. So there is talent to be found later in the draft. mike piazza was taken in the LAST ROUND as a courtesy to a friend... love that one. Cerbaho-WG
Looking at the Skogley pick, he has some obvious mechanical flaws (slows down his delivery on his offspeed stuff), but his stuff is very, very good. Even though he had atrocious stats, I like the pick.
Sonik22
Round 24 1B Kevin Patterson L/R 6' 4 215 lbs. Biographical Data Player Name: Kevin Patterson Position: First base School: Oak Mountain High School, Birmingham, AL School Type: High School Academic Class: Senior Birthdate: 09/28/88 Height: 6'4" Weight: 215 lbs. Bats: Left Throws: Right Report Date(s): 04/24/07 Game(s): Shades Valley High School Focus Area Comments Hitting Ability: While there are some holes in his swing, mostly on the inner half of the plate, Patterson does have some hitting skills. Being more aggressive at the plate would help as well. Power: This is his best offensive tool. Patterson has plus, plus raw power. He's not pull-conscious; his best power is to the gaps. Running Speed: He is a below-average runner. Fielding: Patterson is a below-average defensive player and will have to work hard to develop even average skills at first base. Range: He is not very mobile and has limited range. Physical Description: Patterson is a big, strong first baseman with a Sean Casey-type body. Medical Update: Patterson missed a large chunk of the season with a broken hammate bone in his hand, but came back healthy at the end of the season. Strengths: His plus, plus raw power. Weaknesses: His defense is below-average and his overall hitting package needs work outside of his power potential. Summary: Patterson is a kind of all-or-nothing, hit-or-miss kind of guy. When he can get his arms extended, he's got tremendous power. But he also has some holes in his swing and sometimes tries to work counts too much at the plate, leaving some concerned about his overall hittability. He'll never be drafted for his glove. If he hits for power, he could be a star in the future. He does have a very strong commitment to Auburn and is considered a tough sign.
