Top 11 of 2003... Well the first half anyway

Yep, it is that magical time of the year again... Baseball, hot dogs, summer movies, and my 1/2-Way Marker of the Year; the Top 11.

Lot of good music news thus far this year... Guns'N'Roses (one of the only bands worth listening to from that Black Hole known as the '80's) is resurrected as Velvet Revolver with Scott Wieland of Stone Temple Pilot's Fame... Eminem's protege of sorts, 50 Cent, is chart-topping... Couple of good albums released this year already; Meteora by Linkin Park, Songs about Jane by Maroon 5, Get Rich or Die Tryin' by 50 Cent and a couple of others supposedly to be released such as Korn...

11 1/2-ers (Didn't quite make the team)... Listed in no particular order, of course.... Nelly and P. Diddy - Shake Your Tailfeather... Trapt - Headstrong... 50 Cent - P.I.M.P.... Audioslave - Show Me How to Live... Disturbed - Liberate... Good Charlotte - The Anthem... Michelle Branch - Are You Happy Now... Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body... Queens of the Stone Age - Go With the Flow.

And now, without further ado, the Top 11 of 2003's first half.

POWERMAN 5000... free... After a long absence, Powerman 5000 returns with the same rock and message that made them a name for themselves.

JANE'S ADDICTION... just because... Another band that had been gone just too long. Jane's Addiction returns with a smash single that combines the same sound of their '90s success with an extra kick of rock that makes "Just Because" too hard to resist.

BLACK EYED PEAS and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE... where is the love?... Ever so catchy. The combination of Black Eyed Peas and Justin make for such a sweet sound with just the right message.

JENNIFER LOPEZ... i'm glad... The year's sweetest, most tender love song comes from a very unexpected source.

MAROON 5... harder to breathe... In a year that's been marked by less than spectacular new bands and one smash (50 Cent), Maroon 5 has quietly stayed out of the limelight, but they have a killer CD and a killer single. So underappreciated now, but hopefully they will emerge soon.

NICKELBACK and KID ROCK... saturdays are all right for fighting... Poor Kid Rock. Looks like he lost Pam, but hey, he got himself on my Top 11 list with his role on the Elton John cover with Canadian rockers, Nickelback. Man, am I glad I was wrong about them. A-material rock, right here. And, Kid, it's the fans that count, anyway, right?

50 CENT... in da club... You knew he would be here. If you ever tune in your radio to 96.3 or 103.5 FM (in the Chicagoland area, of course), you can't help but be exposed to 50 Cent by now. While he's not at the same level as Eminem, there is raw talent here to be molded. "In Da Club" may not (nay, isn't) the best song on "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" but it has become 50's staple song for the time being, much like "My Name Is" was Slim's first album smash. Whether or not this is a long-term success project or merely a one-hit wonder will have to be seen.

AUDIOSLAVE... like a stone... If there was ever a song to get you nostalgic for the good ol' days of Rage Against the Machine, this is it. Chris Cornell's vocals are great, yet there is still something missing. Regardless, there is a certain charm captured in this song...

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE... cry me a river... Anyone who's ever had their heart ripped out of their chest and smashed into a million tiny pieces can relate to this song, whether you want to admit to it or not.

LINKIN PARK... faint... So chastised for sounding just like they did on "Hybrid Theory." Why does everyone always want bands with a unique sound to explore into other strange dimensions? Screw that! While there are a handful of bands that really successfully use the turntable (311, Incubus), none come as close to perfection as the SoCal pentuplet. Why change when no one else is even in your league?

FOO FIGHTERS... times like these (acoustic)... There are a handful of bands/performers that you really can say are at the top of the world right now. Linkin Park, Incubus, and Eminem all immediately come to mind. However, lost in the fog are the venerable Foo Fighters. While they, and especially front-man Dave Grohl, will always have an unfair competition with Grohl's former band, Nirvana and their front-man, the late, great Kurt Cobain, The Foo Fighters have been one of the steadiest and most solid bands of the last 25 years. Nothing fancy; no diamonds, Escalades, or Playboy Bunny girlfriends... Nope, The Foo Fighters have just done nothing but produce great music for nearly a decade now. Their maturation to one of rock's leading voices is now complete. Whether not they're the best band in the world, when I'm an old geezer sitting in Depends, I'll throw on a Foo Fighters CD (or whatever they're using) and be reminded of my good ol' days.

Kind of corny.

But good.

Questions, comments, and general deep thoughts are always welcome.

This time already?? Ah my favorite time of the year... Anyways

POWERMAN 5000... free... After a long absence, Powerman 5000 returns with the same rock and message that made them a name for themselves.

Haven't heard this song, but I think PM5000 suck. Maybe they should have stayed absent.

JANE'S ADDICTION... just because... Another band that had been gone just too long. Jane's Addiction returns with a smash single that combines the same sound of their '90s success with an extra kick of rock that makes "Just Because" too hard to resist.

Haven't heard this one either, but never had a problem with Jane's Addiction.

BLACK EYED PEAS and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE... where is the love?... Ever so catchy. The combination of Black Eyed Peas and Justin make for such a sweet sound with just the right message.

Again, No Heary, but it seems like something I wouldn't want to.

JENNIFER LOPEZ... i'm glad... The year's sweetest, most tender love song comes from a very unexpected source.

See number 9. On a side note what's the over/under on the Affleck marriage?

MAROON 5... harder to breathe... In a year that's been marked by less than spectacular new bands and one smash (50 Cent), Maroon 5 has quietly stayed out of the limelight, but they have a killer CD and a killer single. So underappreciated now, but hopefully they will emerge soon.

Never heard of the group or song. Sounds like they're underground, you trying to be me now?

NICKELBACK and KID ROCK... saturdays are all right for fighting... Poor Kid Rock. Looks like he lost Pam, but hey, he got himself on my Top 11 list with his role on the Elton John cover with Canadian rockers, Nickelback. Man, am I glad I was wrong about them. A-material rock, right here. And, Kid, it's the fans that count, anyway, right?

Nickleback bores the crap out of me, and the only thing good Kid Rock has ever done was his part in Joe Dirt

50 CENT... in da club...

From what my friends who are Hip Hop fans tell me, He is completely overrated, and they "don't get the hype" I've heard the song and think his voice is so f***ing dull and monotone, and has no emotion in it. I'm surprised more people don't fall asleep listening to him drone, on, and on.

AUDIOSLAVE... like a stone... If there was ever a song to get you nostalgic for the good ol' days of Rage Against the Machine, this is it. Chris Cornell's vocals are great, yet there is still something missing. Regardless, there is a certain charm captured in this song...

Wait people actually want to hear Tom Morello's untalented repetitive RATM riffs again? I sure don't. Man I would much rather hear more Soundgarden than more Rage. Chris Cornell could do so much more. I hope he does another solo album, cause I can't say enough good things about "Euphoria Morning"

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE... cry me a river... Anyone who's ever had their heart ripped out of their chest and smashed into a million tiny pieces can relate to this song, whether you want to admit to it or not.

I was really hoping the teenie boppers would go away, but they just don't. But he does get extra points for the part in the video wear he smells "Britney's" hair. Grade A creepy right there Mr. Timberlake, Grade A.

Completely Played Out. I say it sucks cause it sounds like Hybrid Theory, but I thought "HT" sucked to begin with. And for the record... Turntables on Incubus' S.C.I.E.N.C.E > Any Linkin Park Song.

Wow, for once I have no problems with your number one pick. Foo Fighters f***ing Rock. End of Story. And I think I like the acoustic version of this song better than the studio version. Which I can't say about the acoustic "Everlong" that song just doesn't feel the same with out the rocking drums.

All in all a list of songs I haven't heard, or want to. I think I'll post my top albums of 2003 so far list, to completment this list, it'll only be 7 albums long though.

Top Albums of 2003, As bought buy Cali.

7. Strapping Young Lad - SYL - Definately the most dissapointing purchase of the year so far. But, It was gonna be a difficult task for them to top "City" a metal masterpiece. I already knew they wouldn't top it, but it was a little worse than I expected. Still a great live band though, Heavy as a Motherf***.

6. The Haunted - One Kill Wonder - Not getting much playingtime, so I really can't give a good ranking on it. Less thrash oriented than their last album but some good s*** on their none the less.

5. This Is It, The Best of Faith No More - A great chance to relive some classic rock from the Mid 80's Early 90's. Mike Patton is the s***.

4. Machine Head - Hellalive - Usually not a fan of the Live albums, but this one sounds great, and includes a rare live performence of song "The Burning Red" Which I really hope makes the tour setlist next time they go out on tour.

3. The Devin Townsend Band - Accelerated Evolution - Devin Townsend does it again with this latest solo project. Though not as good as my favorite of his solo albums, Terria and Ocean Machine, still a great solo album, with some great songs.

2. Opeth - Damnation - Wow! This albums is f***ing spectacular. Didn't know of they could pull off a "Soft" album, but boy did they prove me wrong. The Vocals on this album are sooooo f***ing good.

1. Lamb of God - As The Palaces Burn - Ho-ly s***! This is the heaviest thing I've heard in a long time. It just does not let up at all. Great Riffs, Great Vocals, Great everything. Produced by the afformentioned Devin Townsend, he gets the best of out them on this album. 10/10.

There's my list so HA!

That whole list is gay as a hay ride. You must have a thing for Justin Timberlake as he's on there THREE times. That Jennifer Lopez song is f***ing awful, and I haven't even heard the Linkin Park one but Cali is right, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is better than anything LP could ever do (or have the mixers in the studio do for them).

I don't see how you can put out a "Top 11 songs" list, because that assumes that you have any musical taste with which to judge songs, and you obviously do not.

No Radiohead? No dice.

2 + 2 = 5 is a great throwback to The Bends, and There, There isn't too shabby.

Oh, Linkin Park is still God awful. Teenage angst, cry cry cry.

Edit: Only decent song on the list is QotSA - Go with the FLow.

Q 104.3?

I like Ian O'Malley when he is the DJ on weekends, he has that deep smokers voice that the old school DeeJays always have.

According to Ian O'Malley the breakfast of champions is a pack of cigarettes and some coffee.

people who sue therm "gay" as an insulting term as so trey gay to stay

DoubleM, good list, I don't agree at all points but on many I do. Good calls on 50 cent. That album as a whole has some great tracks - some people be too white to get it, which is why everybody on their list is white, specficially heavy white teen age boy ansgt (specifically rejecting the artistry and lyric quality of Linkin Park) or suburban white boys on crystal meth (whoch prodices thread) or white boys doing heavy metal from the 80s with a kind of 90s industrial veneer.

You did good, DM, it is the critics of your work who can't get over rave music.

Quesyion: what is Linkin park's Faith - is that a reanimation type album from metamora?

I don't really care about the lyrical quality of Linkin park songs, but I do like all their songs..their good.

50 Cent's InDaClub and Wanksta are good songs, don't care about any other of his other songs...that one that's playing all over the radio with Nate Dogg is awful..just awful

Yikes, this list makes me want to vomit....Jenifer Lopez?????That song is awfully awful!! And I'm not like other guys around here, I do like other forms of music...Even though all of my 75 CDs that I have as of right now..65 of them are rock albums of some sort...I have heard just about all the songs on that list.....Powerman 5000's song is ok but wouldn't even put it on the top 100 of 2002...Jane's Addiction's new song is also just o.k. but wouldn't put it in the top 50..

I don't think I even heard that Black Eyed Peas song??? And I don't want to.

I think I heard that Maroon 5 song, but I have to hear it again to comment..I don't really remember how it goes....

Kid Rock hasn't made a good song since Bawitdaba

I love the Foo Fighter song...its great..I agree with that choice.

Very corny though :P
