Cooper Goes Off on North

He was trying to start a fight with A.J. and Ozzie no doubt, but I mean nothing he said today lacked validity.

 

How about some professionalism? North knows he has Cooper where he wants him, because Cooper is getting paid to answer questions. You can ask why it looks like they are laying down, but to ask if they are going to lay down is a cheap shot and shows no stones. North likes to come off as the guy who asks the tough questions, but he likes to slip them in unexpected, take the cheap shot afterwards, and let his guests squirm. Thats not professional.

Lack of hitting always make a team look like lifeless. They're trying hard but it just isn't working this yr. And this yr's team is far from embarassing. Try any of the teams after the '85 season until '90 for 100% embarassment.

I would like to add one more thing to this thread. There seems to be a lot of people jumping on some White Sox staff and players for taking offense and going off on people. Take a step back and take a look at what the common denominator is in every single situation so far. That would be Mike North. He does this to try to get his name in the paper and his sound bits played across the nation. There is a reason why New York papers and media have said that he sucked in his 2 days there. BECAUSE HE DOES! I don't know why or how he is successful here - he is absolutely brutal to listen to, yet for some reason or another he not only has a job here but is like some type of Chicago media icon. This baffles me to no end.

So to conclude my little rant I would just like to ask you all to take a step back and stop blaming our players and blame the asshole instigator that is Mike North. He is an absolute tool.

The lack of hitting is not the only thing. It doesn't look like they hustle much. There is no energy - no speed - no energizer in any way. There is not a guy who is going to make an outstanding fielding play to give the team energy. There is not a guy that is going to stretch a single to a double or double to triple and get some energy in the team. Home runs are nice - but there is no WOW factor on this team right now. There is no one that you want to see and say WOW, what a f***ing catch or throw. How about runnning someone over at the plate? Whether your safe or out that brings energy. I agree completely. North is a hack. It's the easiest thing in the world to say a team has quit -- especially in baseball where you can't just hit someone harder to show you are trying. The Sox are simply a bad team. As you say, any team that doesn't hit looks lifeless. I'm sure that the 4 or 5 members of the Charlotte Knights that appear for the Sox any given night are trying as hard as they can. I'm sure Thome isn't laying, and I doubt that Iguchi and Dye are dogging it in their walk years. North is just doing his Mariotti routine to grab some ratings, and it's a poor way to treat Cooper, a guy that is, I believe, contractually obligated to appear on WSCR.

The morning person has done more to hurt the team than people realize. No one on the team should have to put up with insults. They may not be very good, but they are trying.

Also by moving WSCR, the Sox could be heard farther away from Chicago since the Score's signal travels much further than ESPN's. That is also kind of a big deal and the money that WSCR bought the Sox for, too.

They actually have a great, no BS rapport -- they've gone after each other, and not taken it personally, quite a few times. North is no doubt a jerk, but his stuff with Cooper is almost always entertaining -- and as a Sox fan, I generally feel that it's good therapy. Basically, North cuts to the chase -- none of that typical sportscaster "What can you guys do to improve?" stuff. And Cooper's a tough New York guy (who's been paid for this weekly appearance for 2 years, by the way), and he doesn't back down.

 

One other point: North is many things, and many of them not good. I don't agree with his politics, and he's often a bit of lunkhead. But my long-held view -- backed even by some in the industry and not fans of his -- is that he is a very good interviewer. He gets people to be candid in a way that they generally aren't.

 

Just my 2 cents.

Was he rude and crude and could he have asked the same thing in a nice and more friendly, respectful way? Of course, but that is not his deal. This was par for the course with him.

I have no problem with North and this interview. He asked the question about what the plan is for the next couple series, and if the plan was to lay down. I have no problem with that question at all. I would have asked the exact same question in that situation. And I know alot of SOX fans feel the same. This team has layed down. There is no fight in them at all, no heart, nothing. I watch alot of baseball and in my eyes they are the worst team in baseball. They look like they are just going through the motions and collecting a paycheck. And I love the part where North says, "sorry for ruining your off day, but you guys have been ruining everyday for the fans" I love that. Call him and the whole team out, they deserve it for the way they attempt to play baseball.

It is not the question he asked - he made a statement about a team laying down. No matter how fans perceive it I am sure they are not laying down and that is a f***ed up thing to say. It was unprofessional and an instigating remark to make. He knew what he was doing when he said it. He is out for himself and only himself. He wants to see his name in the paper and his sound bites played around the nation. That is all he cares about. He is a freakin' jerk off and he deserved to be called that. How would you react if someone said that to you and your performance even though you were trying your best. How do you know ther is no fight or no heart - maybe this is the best this team is. Maybe that is all they have and all they can do. What you perceive by watching it on TV and from the stands is most likely not the case.
