QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:13 AM)
At least we can say that this season sucked from the very first batter.

That quote is so f***ing stupid. BTW -- why is Konerko sitting in on these meetings? What do you expect the player to say -- "Yeah, Kenny, it's probably your best bet to just pack in the season and trade everybody." I know Konerko has a NTC, but there are some contending teams out there who could really use a first baseman. I'm not necessarily advocating a Konerko trade, but if Detroit, the Yankees or the Angels (with Kotchman's concussion) came calling, Kenny should be fielding answers offers. It's wierd -- sad, even? -- to think that Konerko still has three years left on his deal after this year.

Grady Sizemore hit a leadoff homer on opening day.That sucked, and is what he's referring to. Things haven't gotten much better since. As far as Konerko's contract, I think they know its probably too long when they agreed to it. But they had to give it to him. He came up huge in the playoffs, and had a big year last year. He'll still hit, at least for a couple of years. Letting him walk after 2005 would have been a PR disaster for the team, and would have taken some of the shine off the championship trophy.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 12:17 AM)
I can officially say you are a loser.

That's fine....I just know that the worst possible thing that could happen is for this team to go .500 over the next few weeks, and KW and Ozzie and company think they can still win this thing. It's not like we haven't had Pods or Erstad on the roster at some point this season. Even when they were on the team, our offense still sucked. No team with our current bullpen could constantly win. When's the last time the Sox had a winning streak? We've lost 7 straight series.

Well the big news from the 2 hour Sox brain trust meeting this afternoon ... KW on the pregame basically says they (the players) want to see how they perform when Podsednik and Erstad get back, to see if the team can go on a run. Konerko was at the meeting, as was Guillen and Hahn and of course Williams.

So it does not look like any trades will be made for now. My guess is they will evaluate where they are in two weeks, like July 1st.

If the presence of Erstad and Podsednik speeds up the inevitable fire sale then management should promote both right now. It's a mistake to believe this team has any chance. They're only looking foolish to believe otherwise. Not that I expect anyone to throw up their arms and wave a white flag, but I expect someone of Williams stature to realize Podsednik and Erstad won't provide nearly enough talent to overcome our deficit in the division and wildcard.

Oh, but I'm sure they'll use another excuse if the team's deficit in the standings happens to fall within 6 games. "There are plenty of divisional games remaining." Nothing like blind optimism to delay during your job: which in this circumstance involves trading players and replenishing a weak farm system.

I'll say this right now -- if I were Williams it'd be wise to unload Buehlre sometime before the Cubs series concludes. His value has heightened recently against weak National leaugue opponents. Every week Williams waits there's the possibility that against his next several AL opponents (TB, BAL, MIN) push his value down. Maybe not drastically, but enough to where a general manager perhaps rethinks about including Player A. Dye is the person we can afford to wait on.

I can officially say that I'm rooting for this team to lose over the next 3 weeks. Just like this last series, I want to see Fields, Dye, and Buehrle do well.

Supposedly you should never root against your own team or root for injuries.

I won't root against the Sox, but I really hope I don't have to hope for both of these guys to have set backs.

If they go .500 over the next few weeks, that's not good enough. There would still be wholesale changes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to be watching the game acting like "YES!!!! Miguel Cabrera just hit a homer". I'll still root for the players on the Sox, but I won't be sad if they lose a game like they did yesterday when some offensive guys do well, but they drop the game. I was happy with the game on Saturday night, as Fields showed some massive power and Buehrle did well.
