Buehrle Wants a Five Year Contract

With the White Sox struggling, trade rumors are floating around baseball, many of them involving free-agents-to-be Mark Buehrle and Jermaine Dye.

So does Buehrle, the longest-tenured Sox pitcher who has the staff's lowest earned-run average and a no-hitter already this season, see himself gone?

"Yes and no," he said. "I can see why I would be, the way we are playing and the baseball side of it. But then again, I want to spend my whole career here and hopefully I won't [get traded]."

The latest rumor has Dye and Buehrle going to the Mets for prospects, which doesn't seem likely at this time.

"It's exactly what it is," Buehrle said. "It's rumors."

While Buehrle reiterates he wants to remain with the only organization he has known, general manager Ken Williams admits there is little chance of that happening because Buehrle wants a five-year contract.

"We're not going to go down the road to talk about this because we established early on in the season [that] we were done talking about that," Williams said. "We made our best overtures and right now we'll just have to revisit that at the end of the season."

Williams also said he would not trade Buehrle out of desperation or for monetary reasons, even if the Sox continue to struggle.

If it were up to me, Dye would go and Buehrle+Gooch would probably stay. Of course if it had been up to me we would've never extended Vazquez, Crede + Dye would've been dealt last offseason and probably a few other guys, too, though I'm sure I'd have dealt off those guys.

Whatever, though. I am having trouble believing that Buehrle won't be here next year. It's really sad.

5 years, $75M. Done deal.

Bingo.

He'll I'd go 80.

Getting rid of Dye and Count is 17 million dollars right there. I wouldn't be mad at all at 5/85.

The Sox have 10 players under guaranteed contracts for next season which tallies about $64M total. Subtract Contreras at $10 and you're at $54, add Buehrle and you're back up to about $70M with 15 spots to fill and about $25-$30M to spend.

Come on - he deserves it. 5 years for 75-85 - hell yes you do that. He is a top of the rotation starter. He has proven to be very durable. You don't let guys like that walk. Get what you can for Dye, Iguchi, and Contreras. Sign Ichiro to replace Dye, plug in Richar for Iguchi, Fields for Pods, say goodbye to Erstad and get Rowand in CF, and whatever rook (possibly Billingsley if you get him for Dye) for Contreras. WTF is the problem there?

RF Ichiro

CF Rowand

1B Konerko

DH Thome

LF Fields

C AJ

3B Crede

SS Eckstein?

2B Richar

Buehrle

Garland

Vazquez

Danks

Billinglsey, Massett, Floyd...

Jenks

I don't have a clue after Jenks.

I would give him 3 years guaranteed and two options that could become guaranteed if he reached a certain amount of goals.

It doesn't work like that.

His agent would politely decline and they would file for free agency.

He either gets 5 years, or he walks.

Simple as that.

Well, let him walk. I don't believe in giving pitchers not of elite caliber huge deals.

Also, I should add that I have a feeling that if Buehrle isn't traded, come free agency, Buehrle will turn down the White Sox offer to him and sign a similar contract with the Cardinals, and he will be forever hated afterwards.

You do realize that Buehrle and Garland are two of the youngest mlb pitchers right now with the most career wins, right?

Mark Buehrle is about the most consistant pitcher out there, and at times, can be dominant. With the market as high as it is right now, and with the team struggling, letting Mark Buehrle go will lose you a lot of fans and a lot of games.

And knightni only backs up my sentiments. See above post. Put Mark Buehrle in the NL, or on the Yankees/Angels/Red Sox and he wins 20+ games every year.

well, what the hell do you exactly consider a career ERA of 3.80, an ERA+ of 122, and probably the most durable pitcher in the majors? Just good?

Buehrle is undoubtedly a top 30 pitcher in the majors, and that would be what I would consider elite.

You damn well better give Buehrle 5 years, and if you have to, you include 2 vesting options for a 6th and 7th years.

Buehrle really has found the way around making the Sox look like the good guys in this; if he leaves, the Sox are the villains.

That's an awful lineup, Southside.

It's a rough draft. Please help me out and fill some holes. I was trying to think of less expensive good value guys to enable the Sox to retain the services of Buehrle and also get Ichiro. Please help.

Ichiro really does pay for himself.

I totally agree.

I say we raid Japan, Cuba and Mexico for relievers in the offseason. :bang
