Anyone think Buerhle more likely to re-sign?

Does anyone else get the feeling that Mark could very well re-sign with the sox, and stave off the trade talk?

If his agent called the sox and asked for a 5yr, $75 mill deal, wouldn't the sox bite? With Mark in the fold--which he should be--that would leave the sox open to dealing Jose or Javy. That would still allow the sox to get younger. The return on a SP locked in for a few years would be even better than what the sox could get for Mark.

I know this depends on Mark and his agent contacting the sox. But they can probably see what the going rate will be, based on current contracts. Esp. with Mark and his wife expected a child soon. He could guarantee his place on the south side with a no-trade clause for a few years. Thoughts?

If he's traded, I can't see there being any scenario that he re-signs here.

That's what I was thinking. Esp. now, as Mark's said he doesn't want to be traded, with his wife expecting. The extra stress of being traded to a new city and dealing with a new baby--Mark probably wouldn't give any kind of discount to the sox in the offseason.

But with KW laying it out in the open, saying Mark could be dealt, might be just the kind of hard ball move to get his agent to come up w/ an offer.

Right now, I say trade him. If you want to sign him, sign him this offseason. This team needs to be completely rebuilt.

I started another thread about the Mets and Contreras, with an official stating that the Mets would give more talent for Jose than Mark. That way the sox would still "retool" in KW's words instead of "rebuild". The sox could offer Mark a good deal and still be in the position to get top talent for either Jose or Javy.

Well, if you want some support for your optimism, here you go:

Two things: my uninformed opinion is that the source for this story is most likely Buehrle's father. From the context it's not his agent, it's someone close to Mark and I think his dad occasionally talks to the media, so that's my guess. Second thing - I don't believe that Mark is gonna sign with us.

I did read that article. Even with all the weekend talk about possible deals for Mark, I don't get the feeling anything is pending.

If Kenny gauges the trade offers for mark, and they are far lower than he expects, he should re-sign him now. My guess is the offers will be lower than they should be. Yet offers for Javy and Jose are likely more than we think they should be.

Trade Contreras (if he'll waive and there are takers), trade Dye, trade Thome (if he'll waive and there are takers), trade Iguchi (if there's a taker), trade Uribe (if there's a taker), trade Buehrle. In that order.

You free up $9 + $7 + $15 + $3 + $4 + $9= $47mil in payroll

Let Podsednik walk, another $3mil. $50mil

Resign Buehrle (5 @ 15), sign Ichiro(4 @13)

The key would be getting solid pitching and hitters in return for your trades. We want to keep our strength (Starting pitching) while strengthing our weaknesses (offense and bullpen)

I like your thinking here. I forgot Ichiro is on the FA market and this guy would be perfect for '08. And if A-Rod opts out, there's a potential target for KW since we know he loves A-Rod.

I hope we see Buehrle and Garland anchoring the rotation with Contreras and Vazquez completely gone. Let's hope they keep up what they started in the Cubs series so KW can keep Mark here.

Everyone knows this org avoids long contracts (longer than 3 years).

Everyone also knows there have been the occasional exceptions - Frank Thomas comes to mind. PK as well.

In MB's case, I think he is in that same category - the Sox would consider making an exception for him. I think there is a 50-50 chance he re-signs, especially if other trades free up a lot of salary room.

He has been in many ways the face of the organization for a lot of years.

This would be the ideal situation. We get a package of prospects for him and we're only without him for the remainder of a seemingly lost season.

Unfortunately, we live in the real world.

Mark Buerhle's wife is going to have their first baby late in July. If they trade him, they will not be getting him back and I think he ends up with the cubs out of spite more then anything if he likes Chicago.

They will not be able to trade him and pull a Sid Ponson and get him back.

Also there is a 90% chance Ichiro resigns with the Mariners and if A-Rod hits the open market the White Sox will not pony up the cash necessary.

The only hope for 2008 and beyond is to trade Contrearas and Vazquez and lock up Garland and Buerhle long term. This is a complete 180 from when I thought the hitting should be sacrificed for the pitching. The bullpen and abysmal hitting has changed my outlook for htis organization.

Relying on who may and may not be available is stupid as there are to many factors on what can happen with a given player. Say the Braves let Jones go and go after Ichiro, suddenly the cost of Ichiro rises beyond what the Sox had hoped to spend.

I'm guessing both sides have had some contact, they are just not publicly indicating such out of respect for one another. I hope the org only says good things when Buehrle is moved and I can only hope this off-season they try to put a lucrative deal to together to at least attempt to bring him back to the southside.

What does Mark's personal life have to do with his trade talks?

That is exactly what I'm wondering. I realize he's having a baby, but that isn't going to prevent the club from moving. The Sox respect Buehrle a ton and I think Buehrle respects the org a ton, however, in the end both sides realize its a business and it is probably why every start Buehrle makes could be the last we see one of my all time favorites pitch for the club.

Everyone keeps posting here. But you need to let Kenny know how you feel. I sent him a letter on Friday and copied Jerry at the ballpark and faxed another one today to both of him. Everyone needs to let him know how they feel.

SIGN MARK BUEHRLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are several people I want to write letters to. Joe West (for his god awful country singing) and Kenny Williams, for when he trades Buehrle and gets rid of the last of my favorite players. I don't want to see a crappy rotation next year. The Sox need to keep Buehrle and Garland together long-term. I can see us keeping Vazquez and letting the Count walk his 50 year old fat ass out of town eventually. Hopefully he'll be traded before the deadline. By the way, am I missing something because I am not seeing a no-trade clause for the Count or Vazquez?

Contreras has a no trade clause for the remainder of the year (it was part of his extension) while Javier Vazquez simply has a list of west coast teams that he will not be traded to (otherwise he can be traded anywhere else at will by the Sox).

Do you guys remember the last time that JR allowed his GM to give a pitcher a five-year deal? Do you remember what happened the last time that JR allowed him GM to sign a pitcher to a four-year deal?

Mark is as good as gone. Time to move on.
