I have nothing concrete or anything like that. Just saying I got a good feeling an announcement will be made tomorrow.

I have heard some rumblings that the Dodgers may be interested in Contreras (don't know if there is much too them cause I'm sure the Dodgers are interested in plenty of guys).

The only reason I see for optimism is that I find it hard to believe that the organization would put out releases that seem to include breadcrumbs of hope such as the one one the previous page. IT would only make the PR nightmare of a failed Buehrle signing worse.

I told you, I don't know anything at all about the Buehrle talks. I really haven't heard any good things in a while about what is going on within the org so your guess is as good as mine.

Only thing I heard is something from a Dodgers connection I know who mentioned the Dodgers were interested in Contreras. Obviously they are also interested in Dye but it sounded like the Dodgers are kind of scared about Jermaine. Based on that it makes me think either they package Dye to get him more valuable (ie with a Contreras) or pretty much throw him on the DL and let him get to 100% and hope he has about 10-15 games prior to the deadline where he can show he's healthy.

However, I'm solely basing my Buehrle prediction on the fact that the Dodgers were not actively considering Buehrle an option (but this guy wouldn't have any inside knowledge on the Sox org).

I also have absolutely no idea if any names have been thrown around...just the fact that they have interest (the person I talked to is very low level).

Contreras and Dye for Kemp and Billingsley... get it done KW :D Kemp and Razor will be fine once they are on the same thing.

Add Betemeit and I'm in. Although I would make that deal without Wilson. Still, I've proposed trades since the days of SoxNet that would bring Betemit to Chicago and I'd love to see him here.

What does Kemp have to do with Razor? Razor was the manager of the Charlotte Knights last year. It was Chris Cron (who is no longer their manager, Rafael Santana is) - the 2006 Birmingham Barons manager that he took a swing at. By the way, why was Cron demoted from AA Birmingham Barons manager to being the Rookie league Great Falls manager? What happened there? Does anyone know?

Cron was a roving guy and I think they wanted him to go back to doing such. I can't specifically speak but I know in the past he indicated he was interested in being more of an assignment guy who went around and than just managed a team for half of a season (but I don't remember the exact details of it anymore).

Maybe someone else remembers better than me.

I would love to see the Betemeit and Kemp deal to Chicago for Contreras that you keep talking about. LOVE IT!!!! I think Kemp is going to be outstanding and Betemeit, if he can play shortstop, would be a great pick up. It would be a great move.

Thank you. I would say that answers it. I was speculating things in my head that maybe they didn't like the way he took control of his team during and after the fight. I was trying to make sure it was nothing bad. It seemed like a big drop off from AA manager to Rookie League manager.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Silence may be golden when it comes to negotiations between the White Sox and left-handed ace Mark Buehrle.

Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn returned to Chicago Thurday and wrote in an e-mail, "Unless or until we have an announcement of some sort, I wouldn't expect us to provide any updates or comment."

And Jeff Berry, Buehrle's agent, wrote, "Nothing new to report."

But two sources familiar with the negotiations said the two sides were close to completing a four-year, $56 million contract that could make Buehrle the highest-paid Sox player annually at $14 million per year.

One of the potential stumbling blocks, according to one of the sources, could be the Major League Baseball Players Association, which might hesitate to approve the deal because it believes Buehrle could command more on the free agent market this winter.

Manager Ozzie Guillen acknowledged speaking with Hahn Wednesday night.

"Everything sounded great," Guillen said. "I was excited."

Buehrle bobbed and weaved with reporters before Thursday's night's game against Tampa Bay.

"No comment," he responded when asked about the status of talks between Hahn and Berry.

Buehrle wouldn't even acknowledge if discussions were ongoing "because I don't want to say anything and get you guys confused."

Buehrle said he had lunch with Berry Thursday but said the agent didn't convey a sense of urgency to complete a deal by this weekend.

"Would I like it to?" Buehrle said. "I'm kind of tired of seeing my name out there, but that's going to happen up to the trade deadline (July 31) or until a deal is done. It's going to happen until July 31 or even later."

Buehrle is scheduled to make his next start Monday when the Sox open an eight-game homestand against Baltimore.

Guillen seemed weary of the scrutiny over Buehrle's future.

"I told Rick, 'From now on, I just worry about the White Sox.' It seems like we just worry about one guy. We have a couple of free agents and we only talk about one guy. Obviously, he's the one everybody wants. But I'd like to stay away. Good or bad, I have to deal with it. I hope it's more good than bad. If it's bad, we have to move on. Like I say, it's not an easy thing to do."

Buehrle is under consideration for the All-Star Game on the basis of his 3.33 ERA in 15 starts. But he said he hasn't thought about being selected, and his pregnant wife Jamie is expecting the couple's first child at the end of July.

Here is why I think this gets done.

1) There appears to be a better return on Contrearas than Buerhle. I think most teams feel Buerhle will resign in Chicago or St. Louis and therefore are leary about giving up good prospects. Buerhle is a solid pitcher but Contreras may have more upside as far as carrying a team ala 2005 (I don't see this but maybe).

2) Now KW sees if he needs to rebuild and can get more for Jose than Mark, he needs to try and resign Mark to kept a good rotation in tack and then move Jose ASAP but signing Buerhle needs to be in place before Contrearas can be moved. Therefore the rush to see what Buerhle will sign for. The Sox blowing really helped this and may in the long run be the best thing that happened to this organization rather than finishing 6 games back.

3)The White Sox fans understand pieces need to be moved and Mark fits the PR better than Jose therefore it is a win/win for the fans. Maybe not KW as he may not want to allocate that kind of money to Buerhle.

4) Dye can not be traded while on the DL and although it hampers the Sox at this time, he can be moved and DL'd by another team retroactively and heal there. I assume the receiveing team would be fully cognizant of the ails of Dye. This is why a package of Dye & Contrearas plus a good ML arm could net something pretty decent from a SD/LA at this time.

5) Hahn is going back to Chicago to finalize something. If a deal was not completed wouldn't he want to try and work through it....unless they are far apart and there is no chance for a signing.

Also to answer a question I have been asking for three days.....Buerhle's agent lives in Tampa therefore he being there has nothing to do with a contract negotiation and hence his stating that he has nothing new. We find out later that the talks may have started with Hahn and the Buerhle family. Buerhle was on the Sox pregame yesterday and it sounded like there may be something to his wife wanting to stay and get a deal done. PURE SPECULATION from me but I would not be surprised if this was all completed between Hahn and family members and the last couple of days were all the offical stuff. KW does not deal with this stuff.

IMHOFWIW

4/56 makes a lot more sense. I figured it would take 4/60, but I think the players union would leave it alone if 4/56 is the deal. Either way I think we will learn a lot tomorrow....well now today.

Can the players' union actually block a deal, or can they just voice their displeasure with what they may feel is a "below market" deal?

That can block it.

The question is more like, "Is there precedent for them blocking it because the player's taking a little less money?"

I don't think there is, but I don't know. Someone enlighten me.

There doesn't need to be. They can make him the example. It's got to start somewhere.
